Journal of a Traps/Sonic

The point of this post is to help anyone that was on the fence about making a new defender.

How i got here? I slapped up a post on the forums asking for advice on a great defender to make, as i never had a fender i stuck with, and after tons of great advice this combined with my playstyle this is what i have come up with.....

Whats happened so far? I made the toon and then did some street hunting in atlas till level 4. From there i moved on to Kings Row and street hunted to level 5, then talked to detective and did my scanner missions and then thwarted the robbery of atlas park bank. Early on, at level 5, i set my diff to fight bosses at 0/1. Its been great, sonic seems to melt them away mano e mano.

After i got my temp jet pack, i went out to the hollows and completed all the arcs there, in the middle of it i got on a 1 x DFB run.... all said and done i am now level 15...

Whats next? I plan on moving on to faultline at this point and running all the contacts there, hopefully doing a summer event, posi, synapse, and drowning in blood if i can get on a team for it.

So far i am loving this combo, super fun to play and moves right along.. Things i need to figure out and work on are....

1. Find the best use of acid mortar and posion trap, regarding placement and when to use them.
2. Triage beacon,,,,hmmm gotta find best use on that one too, solo....

What i found works at low levels

1. by level 14 i noticed i was missing a lot, granted i had no enhancements really, so i went ahead and slotted up level 15 IO's and got a kismet +acc....that helped alot....
2. Also got a celerit +stealth proc in sprint at level 14....
3. by level 10 i had all 6 defender ato's and had howl 6 slotted n ready, amazing difference and that little self heal is great!

I am also enclosing my HASTY build that i have so far, i am open to any help from anyone on anything i posted on this build and journal...i hope by the time i get to 50 i will have a better and great understanding of this excellent combo and build. I am not attached to any of the powers i have picked so far..so feel free to rip it up if need be.

Also, is shrief-scream-howl the best way to start off a fight? or shall i start with howl.....

Thanks, hope this helps someone or anyone or is at least amusing... more to follow over time!!

EDIT: oops forgot to attach my build, here it is

Got up to 19 at this point, but real life calls now.... a few things to note

1. Got on a summer event, with a ill troller, widow and blaster....we OWNED it...was amazing and no deaths..... traps/sonic was put to good use on this event i think...

2. I then teamed up with a SG mate.... water/storm troller and as a duo we were unstoppable... was nice to see...

Really loving the debuffs these sets have to offer, yes traps takes a few to get set up, but well worth it in the end, especially when groups seem to melt...

Now my new question is....seeker drones.....drop in middle of mobs or around me?? and i go Shout..alot of people dont seem to like it, i enjoy the high damage.... hoping to get Amplify at 20 and super speed at 22, with stealth at 24....

Is it better to drop poison trap in middle of a mob or have them come to it? Loving this so far.,..

Try to drop pgt right on their toes, as soon as you can. Acid mortar has a range of about 60 feet or so, so pull it back out of the spawn a bit so it doesn't get nailed by any aoe's. It's tough, but not invincible.

Lead with your drones when you can, they are an awesome way to soak up the alpha when needed or if your tank is hesitant. Read Silas's guide for a traps corr to get a feel for how to play to traps strengths.

Use Seeker Drones for Alpha Strike. Place them above or behind the mobs. End result make the mobs turn away from you. Mobs attack Seeker Drones and you move in to place Poison Trap with Lockdown proc, which you do not have ( I suggest you get it ). When you have about 8 mobs held you can then place a trip mine and blow stuff up.

I get the whole endurance issue but power sink is up fast enough that you don't need to worry that much about endurance. You also didn't consider how big the right Alpha incarnate will help you out.

With the upcoming Crashless nukes in i24 Dreadful Wail might have some changes, so it will benefit you to having it.

Ragnarok knockdown Proc in Caltrops seems to work just about every time when you first place it down. I have no clue why, but it is a great combo of placing poison traps followed by trip mine followed by Caltrops, followed by trip mine again.

I like what you did with the recharge. 50 second recharge for Triage Beacon is nice. I just don't like the powers you needed to pick to get it. Personally, again Personally I would give up the 10 seconds recharge on Triage for other power choices.

Your short .50 ( half a point ) on defense cap for AOE and melee once Stealth is suppressed.

I would get rid of the Aim and pick up Tactics. I would remove the kismet accuracy and the endurance redux IOs. Place them all in Tactics and 6 slot it with Gaussian for the +2 defense bonus. Your then covered for your defense shortage and any accuracy issue you think you have.

Traps is either make mobs come to you after you set up or pounce on mobs and set up on top of them. Some mobs will dictate what your strategy will be. Mobs like Longbow nullifiers and nemisis type mobs will make you move constantly because of the dots they drop. So in those instances you might be moving around at the edges of triage beacon getting away from the dots that prevent you from placing a Trip mine.

Nullifiers for example usually fire off that debuff right at first sight. So I set up at point A but start the fight at point B thus forcing the nullifier to fire off the debuff and then moving back to Point A. Point A is usually around a corner to force all the mobs to come to me and get blown up by the trip mine I placed. I also try to eat a purple before the fight because of the defense debuff, otherwise I've faceplanted a few times while at point B because so many mobs now are able to bypass my defenses and do damage to me. Again I am running anywhere from 3/7 to 4/8 at times and 2/6 for TIP missions.

Levels 15 - 24

Knocked out another Summer event, didnt go as well as the first one, no real taunt or ways to lock down the av's so they ran around quite a bit...

Also did posi 1 and posi 2 TF, and i must say on the last mission of part 1, where you fight the mobs of CoT in front of city hall, having my traps down and alll that jazz made it a sinch....first time i truly had fun on that part of the TF lol....

Checked out Silas's Guide, good stuff...and revised my build a bit based off the guide and fellow recommendations, anything glaring i am still missing.... Truly excited to hit level 26

Great thing is, I love this toon, and cant seem to not play him when i get on the game....its nice... revised build below, and as i said its a work in progress

Did some more research on the forums, and this is what i have come up with in preparation for i24.....figure i may as well roll it now and not have to worry about respec..

As well i hit 26 the other day, and am now figuring out decent techniques with Trip Mine.. any tips besides the obvious set and pull into the mine?

Here it is.... thoughts/critiques?

It's gonna depend what you're doing. TM isn't worth using on a fast moving team. Acid Mortar and PGT are about all I lay down on speeds, then I start in with Howl and Shockwave for more debuff and some KD.

Solo, small mobs or even 1/8 setting. I like the slight delay after you drop a TM because it allows you to queue and cast FFG before it triggers. If you have SS and a stealth IO this works great. Then PGT while they're on their backs and you may have time for another TM

Solo, +4/8 spawns never lay your mines in a straight line or all in one area. Mobs almost never travel at the same pace so you might get one or 2 baddies out ahead of the pack to take all the damage. I like to find a corner or object (LoS)to set up as my defensive point. From there I drop as many TM/ PGT as I think I need, and can usually have 2 TBs and 2 AMs out all the time, turn the corner and continue to drop a few more TMs leading up to the mob. This will allow the first part of the mob to take damage without setting off all the mines. If you're trying to pull the whole mob don't drop any PGT outside of where you want to fight them.

I'd suggest dumping Shout with it's current cast time. It's just not worth it. Shockwave is much more usefull. With a high recharge build you can spam Shriek and Scream as a single target attack chain.

I like the ATO set in Scream due to it recharge, usefull if you're on a team light on heals.

I may respec into Dreadful Wail when I24 hits, but right now I'm using the build with Shockwave.
