Salvage conversion?
1- so you want to convert your Kinetic Weapon into a Clockwork Winder, or your Military Cybernetic to a Mutant DNA Sample, or your Psionic Manifestation to an Inanimate Carbon Rod? No thanks, that would would just be weird, and it's bad enough that we do that with Incarnate Salvage - though that has a Lore precedent when you take the Incarnate item from Trapdoor in Ramiel's arc.
2- We've (kinda) already got this. You can use AE tickets to get any salvage (at random for commons, or specific pieces for Uncommon/Rare). The only difference is that you have to earn the tickets; you can't trade in your unwanted salvage for more tickets.
What I'd rather see is new sets to fill in all the holes - there are still several categories that need more variety - and just make the recipes for these sets use mostly the "unwanted" salvage. After their release, we'll see a period of market turbulence where the junk adjusts to its new equilibrium price, and the new recipes find their spot, but once it settles, the salvage prices should be more balanced - if their usage is roughly balanced.

2} That's kinda where the idea came from, yeah - but while it addresses some of the demand, it does nothing about the overwhelming unwanted supply.
About the postscript, that reminds me...

1) /Signed. Something like the insp convertor would be great, even with expanded storage I'm filling up with multiple junk salvage items and still have to open ah to craft stuff. I'd be more than happy to trade in x no of junk pieces for 1 good rare.
A lot of the demand problem for certain salvage is because of resellers buying and selling higher.

The problem: There's a metric harpton* of invention salvage that has next to no demand and often can't be given away. There's also an equal fraction of salvage that's the exact opposite, with a small percentage with supply, demand and prices hovering around the middle-ish.
The proposed solution: Salvage conversion.
Option 1} Salvage converters, wherein each conversion token can convert X pieces of identical salvage into other pieces. Might reuse bits of the Enhancement Conversion system.
Option 2} Tokens. Add an option to set NPCs {replace some of the merit vendors?} to take in salvage in return for salvage tokens, which can be exchanged for salvage tokens which can in turn be traded in for specific salvage, though at a loss - 1:2, 1:3 for equivalent rarity, multiply up or down for rarity difference? To prevent hoarding {since it would essentially serve as a fungible salvage inventory}, cap the maximum amount of tokens that can be carried at the same time, vary them according to level, or have them expire after a certain period.
On the whole, it might help fight the disparity between the two niches of want-it-need-it/do-not-want salvage.
