Starting Up Again

Hello friends,

So I am extremely old in terms of this game...I registered my account back in December of 2004. I don't know how many people are still around from that long ago, but I was talking to someone from work today and they said the game was now free and I went crazy and had to start playing again. Anyways I rebooted my account and got my characters back. I logged in moments ago with my level 50 blaster and wow was I confused. I stopped playing back when City of Villains started up, so realistically I probably stopped in early 2006. That was 6 years ago and I guess, if anyone would be willing, I could really use some help filling me in in what the hell has gone on since then...major changes are good, but even minor ones would be greatly appreciated. Game structure still seems about the same, but like I said I just didn't know what to do. I'll be making a new hero tomorrow which will definitely help in reacclimating, but I figured I would come here and see if anyone has the experience to go back 6-7 years and fill me in. Thanks a lot guys any help would be greatly appreciated

The best advice I can think of to help you learn the ropes after so long an absence is by getting in touch with the members of the Mentor Project.

Also I don't know how many Paragon Rewards you were awared for the time your account was previously active, but if you don't have enough already I strongly urge you to get at least 5 Paragon Reward tokens so you can unlock permanent access to the global channels.

The global channels are where most of the games communities congregate. They offer easy communication across all the servers and factions making it much easier to find teams, especially if you play on more than one server.

You get Paragon Rewards one of two ways. 1 reward for each month you subscribe or 1 reward for every 1200 Paragon Points you buy.

Another great way of meeting people is participating in player sponsored event such as Tanker Tuesdays. Each week players with Tanks meet on a different server and run missions, task forces, etc. The only requirement is that everyone runs a Tank.

Hope this helps.

Stopped playing with COV....

So, you're used to SOs, you didn't really have to deal with "enhancement diversification," probably never played (or played much) of the villain ATs, never touched inventions (which, if you're free/lw tier premium, you still won't be messing with,) ....

Yeah, check the mentor project and/or paragon wiki. That said, the biggest things off the top of my head you'll be dealing with (and my timing might be off on some of these) - and ignoring "things you'd need to purchase" for the most part, like Praetoria :

- Enhancement diversification. Don't know how your builds look, but in general, 3 SOs worth of enhancement of any one type is the most (effectively) to put in anywhere. The fourth really gets smacked down.

- Super sidekicking. Don't need to find a mentor for everyone, don't need to worry about getting kicked from a TF if your exemplar vanishes. You're auto-exemped down (but still need to be the minimum level for a TF.)

- You can start any non-epic AT (which you may or may not have access to - probably have Kheldians unlocked, definitely don't have Villain EATs - soldiers/widows - unlocked, and Controllers and Masterminds are locked until purchased/you get the reward tier/you're VIP, due to their effect on server load) on any side.

- Galaxy City is gone. You don't pick hero/villain at character creation unless you skip the tutorial. New tutorial. Posi's TF is revamped. Sister Psyche's TF is ... well, now Penelope Yin's TF. Faultline now has content in it (15-25.) Atlas and Mercy are revamped.

- Travel powers at 4. APPs open up at 35. Fitness is inherent (you'll need to respec.) You can, at 10, create a second build (same powersets, different pools if you want, different powers/slotting. They don't affect each other.)

- Non VIP = very limited on slots (you'll probably have two to unlock.) You can purchase more. VIP has 12 per server, and a specific VIP-only server available. Plus the server lists (NOT the servers themselves!) got merged... so you'll see more servers anyway.

... those are off the top of my head. Use the other resources mentioned. Lots, lots, lots of changes for you.

If you plan on playing extensively but don't want to really 'subscribe,' buy $15 of points in the store and just get an Invention License every month. The $15 package will get you 8 months' worth.

It can also be worth it to buy a bit more when account unlocks go on sale; it averages a lot cheaper than subscription, but you end up with most of the benefits.

Wow thanks a lot guys. That's a whole bunch of information and to the guy that mentioned the inventions and all of that.....that's exactly where I stopped (it was getting to be a little much with school and everything so I just stopped. I think you guys are right the best option is probably going through all the patch notes which will be a pain in the ***, but it's really my only option. I'm really confused though abou thtese global servers and all of that....all my players were locked when I started back up and I unlocked 2 50's and 38, but now what? My mind is just full of f**** haha. Like what did it mean that they were now on the global server or something? I know one of you touched on it, but more explanation would be greatly appreciated there. Meanwhile I'll be delving into the patch notes.

Global character slots can be assigned semi-permanently to any server. How many global slots you have is based on how many you earned/purchased.

2 free slots were awarded if a player was subscribed at the release of Issue 12 and for a few weeks after (no longer obtainable). If unassigned, these turned into Global Slot Tokens at Freedom launch. If assigned, these turned into Server Slot Tokens at Freedom launch.

2 free slots are awarded for applying a Going Rogue serial code (if applied before Freedom launch only) (no longer obtainable). If unassigned, these turned into Global Slot Tokens at Freedom launch. If assigned, these turned into Server Slot Tokens at Freedom launch.

1 free Global Slot Token is granted for every 12 months of paid subscription time.

Premium Players receive at least two Global Character Slot Tokens to apply to any server except the VIP-only server, Exalted. Premium Players can unlock more character slots on each accessible server, for a total possible of 36 characters on 15 servers (540 total slots).

Please note that Premium Players can unlock character slots occupied by characters that require further licenses to utilize. For instance, Masterminds and Controllers require 13 Reward Tokens or a separate purchase on the Paragon Market before being able to play them as a Premium Player. However, the game will allow a player without these licenses to unlock a Mastermind, resulting in an unlocked character that still cannot be played because the system has no way of knowing that a player doesn't intend to buy the unlock for the restricted AT's.

You guys are honestly awesome. This has helped a lot and I appreciate it immensely. If my global handle is still the same it's @Sparkks hit me up sometime. I'm gonna go start from scratch and figure this all out. Thanks again!!!

It isn't a bad idea to start a new toon and level it up again. That way you at least get to see new features a few at a time, like a new player would. Play the new tutorial, do the intro missions in Atlas Park or Mercy (Villains). Find out what "DFB" is. Etc.

There's no reason not to unlock your 50's and play those too, but having a couple of new toons too could be fun. There's a lot of new power sets available so you can play the same old ATs in new ways.

On a side note, the game isn't really 'free to play'; it's a hybrid business model. As a Premium player, there are a lot of things you have to buy access to, and a few that you can't access at all. If you decide you like the game and are happy to be back, you might want to subscribe. Just $15 per month and that's some pretty damn cheap entertainment.

FYI, look at the forum names. White names are Premium and gold names are VIP (paying a subscription fee). Lots of people are still paying and feel it's well worth it (I have two accounts - both VIP).
