Periodic crashing

OK, since it seems like CoH's periodic crashing on my system is not a common thing for most players, I figured I should try and get some help in maybe resolving the issue!

The game will run fine for a while, but usually within about two or so iTrials (like say, a BAF and then a TPN), the game will crash. The system doesn't hang or anything, just the game itself. I usually get either a Cryptic crash detection window or a Microsoft crash detection window. Sometimes I get the game's "out of memory" error. More rarely, it's a CTD (or rather the window just disappears since I play this game in windowed mode with the window maxed out).

CoH Helper and Hijack This logs to follow. Any insight into what I might be able to do would be helpful! Though I should note that I plan on upgrading the video card in a bit over a month, as well as upgrade the OS to Win7.

Its important to give us as much info as possible so we don't have to ask twenty questions.

First silly question, you have NCsoft Launcher to close when the game starts right?

How old is that GT440 and which brand is it? (EVGA, XFX, MSI which?)

H: Blaster 50, Defender 50, Tank 50, Scrapper 50, Controller 50, PB 50, WS 50
V: Brute 50, Corruptor 50, MM 50, Dominator 50, Stalker 50, AW 50, AS 50
Top 4: Controller, Brute, Scrapper, Corruptor
Bottom 4: (Peacebringer) way below everything else, Mastermind, Dominator, Blaster

Yup.

It's an ECS NGT440 purchased from Newegg on 11/3/2011.

And since you want to know:

Motherboard: ASUS M4N98TD EVO purchased on 10/28/2011.
Memory: Wintec AMPX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 purchased on 3/5/2011.
Processor: AMD Phenom II X6 1045T Thuban 2.7GHz purchased on 4/24/2012.

I would check your temps and if those are high, then check your fans, and last resort double check your thermal paste jobs.

My temps are fine. With those settings you see above, the video card never gets higher than around 75c at its worst. Usually sticks around 68c.

Anyways, after looking at some similar problems other people had (with GT 240s and not GT 440s, though), I figured I might as well try and lower some of my settings. I set FSAA to 2x (no FSAA at all looks like such an eyesore that I can barely stand to look at it for very long), disabled all the special water effects, and turned off shadows altogether. Looks spectacularly crappy! But the upside was that the game didn't crash after just a BAF and a LAM. That's the good news.

The bad news came after joining a TPN right on the heels of that LAM up there. While the game didn't crash right away, the framerate did steadily go down until it was just a hair above a slideshow a few times. I may exaggerate a little, but not very much! With the settings so low though, the GPU never got above 45c, which I found a bit surprising!

Anyways, right at the middle part of that TPN, when Maelstrom wants to mark you for death, the game did what it used to do a lot earlier. All the action stopped and a bit over a second later, I got a crash report screen. But this time, I had the presence of mind to take a screenshot!

Apparently the crash happened someplace the game can't find! I guess that's kind of peculiar. Right now I'm not sure if I want to bother keeping the graphics settings so low, if it's gonna crash anyway. Or maybe it's not even related to the card being a little dinky. I have no idea really.

Oh, well here's something. Apparently, every time CoH's crashed, Windows made a record of it in the Application Event log.

Like this:

Quote:
Hanging application CityOfHeroes.exe, version 1.0.0.1, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Or this (from a few days ago):
Quote:
Faulting application cityofheroes.exe, version 1.0.0.1, faulting module cityofheroes.exe, version 1.0.0.1, fault address 0x005e114a.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
I also get reports about it like this:
Quote:
Fault bucket -1259606976.
Quote:
Fault bucket 71375354.
I'm pretty sure that doesn't really help at all.

Oh yes, and apparently at 8:24 PM, earlier this evening, I got 51 consecutive warnings recorded in the Application Event Viewer that all said the same thing:

Quote:
The NVIDIA OpenGL driver has encountered
an out of memory error. This application might
behave inconsistently and fail.
Note that this happened way earlier from the crash I talked about above. I can't remember if I was playing the game at that specific time, but since this is the only game I have installed that even uses OpenGL, I'm pretty sure that I was!

EDIT: This also happened on 6/16/2012 at 12:44:54 PM, but only once instead of 51 times. There's no record of CoH anywhere near this event. However, WinDVD did crash on 6/17/2012 at 3:53:06 PM. The next record of CoH crashing after that OpenGL out of memory warning is on 6/20/2012 at 9:08:32 PM. The plot thickens.

Hmm. Wondering if the 301 drivers are bugged...
Or a buggy reaction between 301 and something new in the game...
That kinda seems to be the unifying variable in all of this.

I have that kind of crashing also. Can do one or two trials and then restart game so I wouldn't crash. It rarely happens in the older part of game, only if I have been playing for hours without exiting.
I always thought it is connected with memory - since when I look in task manager game have usually used more then 1,5 GB of memory (out of my 2GB).

Going to monitor this post in case you find solution.

I also have similar problems. I can play non-incarnate stuff all day without crashing, but one or two Itrials is a guaranteed crash.

I have an older system currently running an nVidia 9800 GTX with the most recent drivers. If folks think it would be worth it to list CoHhelper and Hijack This logs for comparison, I will. But I didn't want to completely hijack the thread.

I used to get the crashes after spending a while playing TFs/Trials, but it's happened very rarely since I got my shiny new computer.

When I did get them, I found that I could stave them off fairly well by using /unload_gfx after the end of every trial or TF.

Well last night after I posted, I lied in bed to read for a while. Normally I leave the computer idle while I do this, and so I got to see the zig-zagging lines screensaver come on (yeah, yeah, I just like the zig-zagging lines; it shuts of the signal a few minutes later!). Suddenly I noticed that it was acting very strange, like a whole bunch of those colored zig-zaggy lines suddenly popped up and stayed there, getting erased as new lines got drawn over them. Every so often the current moving lines would pause and the continue.

So turn my head around to look at this and I'm like, "what the hell?" I got up to my computer and wiggled the mouse around to bring up my desktop. All my windows were just a little bit messed up, with glitched up graphics here and there. I figured maybe I ought to re-boot, but just then the whole screen turned white. Yup, white! I've never seen that before. The computer was still responsive to commands, but of course I couldn't see anything so it was hard to initiate a reboot. Pressing the power button though did cause it to enter its shut-down procedure. So I let it do that and then turned it back on!

The computer seems OK now. I'm pretty sure that if I stay away from CoH that they will remain so. But I'm not trusting the new video drivers. I'll confess that I hadn't updated the drivers to 301.42 until yesterday. The version I was using before that was 285.58. I think I'm gonna go back to that version as it appears to be more stable.

Posted

OK, I'm back on version 285.58! I'll note that this was the driver I was using when I was getting these kinds of crashes originally. Though it never did something like give 51 warnings in a row about the OpenGL driver running out of memory. I have a feeling that I might have exacerbated my problems there. What I should have done was lower my graphics settings in the game first before updating the video drivers. That's about where I am now though, anyway. But this experience has kind of made me not feel like playing CoH for a while, so I'll try it again when I'm feeling better. Right now I just wish to have a stable system!

HOWEVER, in many cases, the app (and the OS) start getting squirrelly above 1.5 or so.

Well OK! I just spent 45 minutes in the game with my six level 50 characters on Virtue, updating all of their auctions. Collecting up inf and stuff I bid on, putting that back up on the market and all that stuff. No warnings or errors in the event viewer, and so far no glitched up graphics.

This is with the graphics settings lowered to what I'd mentioned earlier in this thread, and with version 285.58 of the video drivers.

Later I shall attempt to join in on some iTrials.

Will be interested to hear how it turns out.

After doing my auction house rounds again like I did the night before, I went into DA and waited forever for a TPN to amass enough players. In the meantime I busied myself defeating foes inside DA. The trial eventually started and all seemed fine until after the second time Maelstrom is defeated. We exited the main building and he defeated almost all of us at once (upon which I declared that "The One Hit Wonder strikes again"...) and I went to the hospital. Upon attempting to exit, I was greeted with this old chestnut:

Quote:
./piggs/stage3f.pigg: Failed memory allocation (zip'd size 2553801, unzip'd size 5592998)
Read failed for file: texture_library/WORLD/streets/elements/Parked_Cars/Parked_Semi/Semi_Cab01.texture
-1

The game ran out of memory and must now exit.
After clicking on OK, I got impatient and went into the Task Manager to kill the process from there. I noted CoH's memory usage; it was at 1,560,196K. I checked the Application Event Viewer, and there was nothing new there.

When I started the game up again and logged in the character with which I'd joined in that TPN, I found that I could not re-enter it. Thus I was cheated out of getting some Incarnate salvage. Talk about pouring salt on a wound! Bogus.

So then, I figured I might as well bring the graphics settings back up since that didn't seem to be helping at all! I turned on shadows again and brought the quality up to medium, as well as water effects. FSAA went up to 8x. On a whim, I decided to check the Application Event Viewer again. Lo and behold:

Quote:
The NVIDIA OpenGL driver has encountered
an out of memory error. This application might
behave inconsistently and fail.
1,071 entries this time. I counted them. No, I won't count them again. LOL

I rebooted the system just as a precaution. I went back into the game and turned off shadows and water effects again. I left the FSAA at 8x. No new warnings about OpenGL drivers running out of memory.

Just as a reminder that this is with version 285.58 of the drivers.

At this point I would start looking at simple hardware testing to verify you don't have a wonky video card.

GT 440s are made with cheap parts in order to be profitable in the price range they typically sell at.

See if you can get a loaner video card from a friend.

Well if that's the case then my problems should disappear when I get a better video card. Unfortunately I don't think I know anyone with a spare video card (or rather I do, but they are all AGP, haha).

Just a general update. I've mostly been doing bid updates in the market and a trial or two (or three) almost every night, and making sure to quit the game and restart it between trials. So far, no problems.

That is to say that the only thing different from before is the lowered graphics settings. I've yet to find anyone with a more powerful video card they'd be willing to spare. I will likely not be able to seriously investigate this problem further until I get a GTX 670 like I've planned.
