Alpha's Lab and Commissions
...We're off to a great start
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Either advertise the price in Euro's or make the us dollar amounts a little prettier: 10, 15 and 25. It is one thing to have paypal automatically convert my money to Euro's for me and tell me how much real money I am sending :P but I definitely wouldn't want to be bothered paying $23.26. Mind you it wouldn't put me off of getting a commission from someone but *shrug*
As for actual dollar amounts on this forum, I always thought the rule (written or just understood) was that so long as specific prices weren't used, all was good.
Also... this forum has been slow for quite a while now so I wouldn't be expecting a dozen responses in a week, nonetheless in a day!
Sorry TBA it has gotten quiet around here as you saw in my thread.
I echo Caemgen's sentiments, it wouldn't be an absolute barrier but I would feel silly
paying extra small amounts of change. If your target audience is America you
should do the conversions for them and price it in rounded dollar amounts.
If you lack a good up to date converter type "XE" into google.
As for rules you are not allowed to list prices for services here or they lock the thread.
Simple work around is provide a link to a DA journal or other site with
your prices and people interested can click through.
@Caemgen: The United Kingdom is not on the Euro,
they use the Great Britain Pound (GBP).
A DA post would also serve to give newer people something to review for your quality, too!
Indeed and welcome to the art section Reppu.
Fair enough, watching the views rise but the tumbleweeds still rolling was a little "Saywha?"
And yeah, ech, being in the UK, pounds is obviously my prefered currency, and having prices in fives seems like a nice, even way of doing things...
Silly Euro and Dollars....we should have kept conquering, darnit!
Problem is, I'm going to run into whacky numbers either way. If I put stuff up in Dollars, then the Euro and Pound numbers are, well, decimal. And the same putting them in Euros.
Gaah. Will have to see what I can do...So, yeah, will put up a dA link when I have something to work with >_<

Tell me about it.
My thread averages 100-200 daily pageviews... 1-3 posts maybe. Some days 4 or 5, some days zero.
I guess set it for the currency/region where you think the majority of your business will originate.

And the Euro and the Pound are different from Monopoly money how??
But yeah, I'd suggest you use the currency you think most costumers will use. Besides, receiving odd numbers isn't as bad as sending them After all, any money in is good money!!
eh, I wouldn't be put off by seeing euros or pounds. Just put whatever you are familiar with and people will do their own conversions. Plus you'd have to update the conversions all the time. You don't have to deal with weird numbers if you stick with a single currency then you don't have weird numbers.

Maybe I'm just lazy but I'm not running to check the exchange rate everytime I want to see if I want to purchase art or not. I go by what I think the exchange rate is (and I am probably way off) and go from there. I may be thinking some Euro priced art is way more than it really is and skipping it... But I am just that darn lazy.
Though most people really are not as lazy as I am. You can tell that by how things do occasionally get done. Take the US Congress for example. If they were all as lazy as me they would never accomplish anything!
errr, wait. Bad example.
I may put in a request, but currently in saving mode for PaX!

Not very lineless but looking real nice so far.
Well, yes, that's because it's hard to block in details and positioning without using lines initially Sheesh!

It can be done with just colors and shapes, it's tricky if, like me (coming from a
pencil/pen background), you are used to having lines define your edges but it can be a fun challenge.
Moneywise... well, given my last commission had prices in AUD, I'd say price where you're comfortable in the currency you want, and let them either use Paypal (select a currency, it'll do the conversion) and/or google the thing ahead of time. (Seriously. Google. "499 Kronor in USD" or what have you. Not that hard. Google's not new. Then again, I've bought overseas more than a little.)
Commission Status is now OPEN.
Let the Silence of the Robots begin! Heh

Ok, I'll be brave and speak up (maybe for quite a few)... what exactly is this "commmission" stuff ? My guess is you do some type of art or reproduction of characters ? I've looked several times, but it's not clear to me. Sorry to sound clueless. Thanks.

"Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car. "
Pretty much, yeah. The commissioner asks the artist to draw however many characters doing whatever, whether that's just standing there looking cool or in action shots, whatever.
We apparently aren't meant to, so I won't talk about prices. The prices I can't mention are in the link in the OP

Yes, it's pay-for-art. (Sometimes people will do trades/free, but they usually won't call those "commissions.") We can't talk about prices here - you'll note in my thread of comissioned art, the most I'll say is "they're cheap for what they've done" or "really worth the price" or (don't think I've ever used this) "way overpriced for the end result."
Follow the links Techbot gave to his deviantart page in the first post, and he'll have prices (and other samples, typically) there. If you decide you like his style/result/etc, then set up a commission with him.
Some people want to be paid in advance, or at least get *an* advance (since some people will... well, not pay.) If it's not stated explicitly, find out in advance.
Get *good, clear* screen shots of your character. Be descriptive in what you want - but also be realistic. If he says (just as a for instance, haven't been to TBA's page) "$10 for single character, no background," don't expect a full comic book page, multiple panels and scenes for $30 or some such. (Those tend to be expensive in any case.)
Get a timeframe, but be (reasonably) flexible in it - things happen.
Find out if you get a preview, choose poses, etc. Some people just knock these things out so fast it's really not realistic to expect one! Usually with more detailed (and higher cost...) pieces, you'll get preliminary, rough sketches to get an idea and to approve. It varies from artist to artist.
Don't pester, but if there's no queue and you haven't heard from them for a while... do ask for a status update (like, say, two weeks if they say "I should be done next weekend" and they haven't said there'd be a delay.)
Character views:
I tend to make them for all the outfits (and generally update when there have been big changes.) Other people may pick a "main" outfit - be sure relevant detail can be seen. F'rinstance, for Madison in that warlordwardog piece (over in the Memphis Art 2012+ thread) I sent him this and specified which outfit to use. (The full size is a bit of a forum breaker.) You may just want one specific outfit.
If they need brighter views or have other questions, find a better place - I do like Studio B in AE, honestly.
Bill, as usual, said it better. Thanks

Time to finally set up shop.
...Again.
So, yeah, I'm back and finally have the time to do more drawing.
Which means commissions are being opened. Hallelujah!
