Need Help updating my Ice/SS Tank

So I haven't played this toon since around when COV came out. and I need to make her a good tank for TF's and big groups again. For Gathering aggro the powers i use the most were EA, CE, and Foot Stomp and then Taunt if I needed it. I hated Icicles and I really would not want to take it if possible. This will be a tanking character so keeping aggro and survivability will be key instead of damage.

Any particular reason you hated Icicles? Given the primary goal you gave of keeping aggro, I would really recommend taking and using Icicles in conjunction with Chilling Embrace. That said, it's your character and with liberal use of Taunt you could certainly get by with Chilling Embrace alone if it's just a personal dislike for the power. I notice in your top build you have both Taunt and Icicles pushed to the very last and not well slotted - I really wouldn't recommend that for a primary tanking build.

As for the other builds, I'm not really sure what direction you're wanting to go or where you're wanting criticism. I assume the first build is yours and the others are just examples you picked up...?

From looking at that thread people are just as divided on if you need Icicles or not, like I said I haven't played in a long time and they aren't slotted. When I used to play they had a very high end cost and the radius affect was very small, I have no Idea if they fixed that or not or if its the same. (I did notice they changed Rage for when it drops off you can actually still attack, but the damage is barely anything.)

I seem to have an easy time keeping aggro with the combo CE, EB, and Foot stomp, saving Taunt for if a squishy pulls something. (As long as they let me get aggro first)

I mainly am having problems about the whole crafting of IO's, I have no idea what sets to use and when I stopped playing the Hami-o's where to only big thing to get back then. Are they just as good? or are the IO's better to get. I can't find on the forums any good posts about them. I do really like slotting the slow part of Ice, I think it helps a lot with any damage I get unless it an alpha strike.

And is Hand clap worth it for a aoe disorient? or is there better powers I should be getting for slotting.? Is the defense from Combat Jumping worth it? If so I may try building with super jump instead, and the last attack in there is a aoe damage to jump into a mob with.

Mainly looking for Critiquing or possible if you know any forum posts that are good for IO's

Even though Icicles, like all damage auras, only hits for a small amount of damage those small ticks add up. If you were to run hero stats, you'd see that it's one of your top damage producers. Damage is part of the threat formula and helps to keep aggro. As always, YMMV

Hami-O's are still used, but IOs with their set bonuses are better in most cases.

I haven't bothered with Hand Clap as I'm not fond of knockback on a tank. The new kb>kd converter from the Overwhelming Force set would fix that, should you choose to keep Hand Clap. (Currently you can only get the Overwhelming Force Enhancements through the summer event, or by trading with someone.)

For the endurance cost of Combat Jumping, it's definitely worth it.

I don't have an Ice/SS build, but I think I've got an Ice/Mace build that I'll try and post later. If nothing else you might find something in there that works for you, or might give you some ideas for your own build.

Unfortunately, Overwhelming Force can only be slotted in powers that take Damage enhancements. Hand Clap does not, so OF can't go in it.

Which is quite sad.

Let me know how I did, also is there a defense cap for tanks? I see the resist cap is 90%

There is a Defense cap, but realistically you don't need to worry about reaching it in the same way as you might want to reach the Resistance cap. You'll see players talking about 'hard cap' and 'soft cap'. Soft cap refers specifically to Defense (usually) and refers to the fact that the game has a minimum chance to hit for NPCs - as a consequence, once your Defense reaches this level, any further Defense is ineffective except as a bulwark against debuffs.

For most content, the Defense softcap is 45% and that's generally what you should be aiming for. In Incarnate content the enemies have a higher tohit, which adjusts the numbers so that the Incarante softcap becomes 59%. When talking Defense, softcap calculations tend to be more practically useful.

to go along on this there is 2 types of def 1 targeted which some go for on there builds and then there is positional. Most builds go for targeted since it is easier to get on certain ones, while they go for positional for the same reason. Ice goes better on targeted, where u want to get your s/l/neg/en close to sc since that is the ones most enemy's have as damage. If you have both targeted and positional sc it will go for the higher numbers on calculating your def. EI if you have your s/l to 45% and melee at 39% it will take the s/l over the melee.

I think the word LSK meant to use was "Typed" defense, not "Targeted" defense...

Examples of "Typed" (Also referred to as Damage Type/Delivery); Smashing, Lethal, Fire, and Cold are just a few examples of the "Type" of Damage delivery you can defend against. This is different then "Positional" (Also known as Vector Delivery). Vectors are Melee, Ranged, and AoE. These are the three Positional attacks that you can defend against.

Thanks for all your help guys, and Hyperstrike you really managed to squeeze everything outta that build. From what I'm seeing I only really need to build on defense on not worry about any resistances right? and for Chilling Embrance, for the pacing the turtle enhancements with the Chance of -Recharge, does that work very well? just wondering.

Well I'm off to take your suggestions and work my build again.

So I had some time to Try rebuilding with a lot of help and suggestions. I decided to go with the Ancillary Pool Soul Mastery for Gloom and Darkness Night hoping these would help with survivability. Wish I had more slots but made do with what I had.

If you need more slots, steal them from Permafrost and Chilling Embrace. Permafrost is a oneo or two-slot wonder. It's a great place for the +Def IOs, but adding more resistance doesn't help all that much (you're already capped to cold, and Fire resistance in that power is only 12.5% anyways. It's a good backup power, but slotting it won't noticeably improve your fire resistance. You can probably get the Fire/Cold defense back from putting those slots in better places, anyways.

Chilling Embrace needs about an EndRed in it, and you're good. I've found that slotting it for slows can actually hinder you if you ever do need to herd a bit, as the mobs just run too slowly to get where you need them to go.

For Chilling Embrace I do agree that they don't like to group up as fast as I'd like so I could steel the slots from there. The main Reason for slotting permafrost was only for the defense to Fire/cold and Aoe set bonus, unless you don't think I really need it? If not then I could put three slots into boxing maybe unless I can find a way to sqeeze some more regen/recovery or recharge somewhere else?


Here's the build with those slots outta chilling embrace, I may have changed up the order of the powers I had in case I exempt down to lower lvls.

Well, you're already well above the soft-cap for normal content for S/L/E/NE damage, and over the incarnate soft-cap for S/L without even using Energy Absorption. Most cold and fire attacks have some sort of S/L component, especially the melee attacks. VERY few cold attacks that enemies use are pure cold damage, and even if they are, you're over the hard cap of cold resistance. Going from 31.7% Fire Defense to 28.57 Fire Defense won't affect you all that much, if you really want the slots somewhere else.

So it's really up to you. If you're good on slots elsewhere, leave the slots in permafrost. Putting another slot into Jab or Haymaker and putting the Tanker ATO Proc in there would probably help you more, anyways, if you can afford it.

You should only ever slot for Typed defense or Positional. Never chase both. The reason for this being is that attacks will only check to your highest defense. So let's say an enemy attacks you with something that is tagged for Smash, Fire and AoE. Your S/L defense would be your highest defense that relates to that attack, so your extremely small F/C and AoE defense wouldn't matter.

As for slotting Chilling Embrace, if you have room for a second slot on it, make it the Impeded Swiftness damage proc. Now you have two damage auras! Or, just one slot it with that. Do you really need an end reduction in it? You have EA and plenty of recharge bonuses to make that a non-issue.

Ice is a primarily defense-based set. And, currently, it's VERY difficult to IO-out for additional resistance, as the resistance values on various sets are microscopic. This may change with the IO-set changes coming in i24. But, for now, that's how things stand.

Ice has 2 main things going for it.

  • High defense
  • Moderate combat control (Slows and endurance drains, limiting an attacker's ability to attack).
You're well above Incarnate soft-cap right now.
So you may want to think about cutting back on all-out defense (you're essentially hedging against debuffs at that point, and that's kinda what you have Energy Absorption for) and look at maybe adding some recharge or beefing up some of your higher attacks that are begging for slots.

Note: In your build, Foot Stomp and Icicles: Go with the following Erads.
  • Dam/Rech
  • Acc/Dam/Rech
  • Acc/Dam/End/Rech.
This'll increase your EndRedux on the the power. FS going to be up fairly often (and Icicles is going to be on all the time). So you don't want them schlorping down your endurance with only 26% enhancement.

Dang it aett u beat me to it, was going to say that but had to go to work. I do believe I mentioned that before in this post about the def u need for your tank. But yes you do not need to worry to much about your positional def. Also what u have slotted in rage is more for positional def then for typed def. I would take some of them out and place them else where. Just add 1 or 2 recharge to it I would say add some rectified reticle to it but u really dont need the extra s/l def since u r already over the SC for it.

Ok, so taking all of your suggestions I backed off some of the defense that I was over on, I was able to add a slot to jab and haymaker to strengthen them, and added the Impeded swiftness smashing proc. to chilling embrace, and some other changed.
