Help Please - Lag Spikes / Rubberbanding

Recently I've started having huge lag spikes and rubberbanding issues. I'm not sure exactly when it started, but it's been a couple weeks at least.

Essentially, I'll be going along my merry way, and suddenly I can't move or activate any powers. It's almost like I'm mapserving, except I can still see things going on around me. I can still take damage, and if I'm running something like Hot Feet I can still damage the bad guys. I can also see everyone and everything still moving like normal. It's just me that's stuck. Netgraph will show a large chunk of red coming across, then at the halfway point or so is when I get stuck.

Other times I'll run up to a bad guy only to discover none of my powers will activate, and they'll pretend they don't see me. 10 seconds later (or however long, I haven't timed it precisely), I'm suddenly 200 yards back from where I was just standing.

This happens in Guild Wars as well, and even simple internet browsing acts like this. I have a Cisco E1200 router, and the internet connection is provided by my apartment complex, so I go from an ethernet plug in the wall -> router -> PC, if that means anything to anyone.

My PC specs, bought February of this year: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=18249292

When it comes to network issues I'm pretty much clueless on where to even begin. Can anyone see anything off? CoH Helper, HijackThis, and pathping to follow.

Thanks!

Aw crap, looks like one of mine.

What does the /netgraph 1 look like when the system starts lagging? And it's not a wireless connection but it is a common connection among your apartment complex.

I'm going to guess it's network and not box related. I don't see any thing out of the ordinary in the HiJack This.

Do you know if your temps are getting too high? Did it get extremely hot where you are when this started? One way to check Temps is with HWMonitor which is made by the same folks as CPU-Z. Start it up and leave it running in the background while you play. Once you're done you can check out the max temp values of all the parts with sensors.

Sorry I can't be further help.

Yeah... I had roughly $1000 to spend when I bought it, so I took your $725 build and upgraded a couple of the components. It's been great so far, other than these lag spikes lately.

Anyway, yes, it's a shared connection. We've actually had more than one person kill the connection for the entire complex because they configured their router wrong causing everyone to try to funnel through them.

If I remember correctly, when it rubberbands on me yellow spikes start showing up on the netgraph 1 that get pretty close together, and the level of green jumps up a bit. When I'm stuck not being able to activate powers in the middle of a fight, typically I will have a huge chunk of red that's made its way partially across. I'm done playing for the night, so I'll try to get some screenshots tomorrow night.

Same thing with the temps, I'll check it tomorrow night. The tower sits on top of my desk with nothing around it. I'm also in central Texas, so there hasn't been a drastic temperature change lately. We've been in the 90s for awhile now.

Looking at your pathping, if I'm reading it correctly, hops 3 and 4 look like they are blackholing. 100 packets lost out of 100 packets sent. Also I would guess that the 2 nodes, 10.1.8.254 and 10.20.0.1, are routers in your apartment complex. I think you need to talk to the management company that runs your complex.

Those look like they are set to not respond to ICMP requests, which is a fairly normal setting, especially on a router you don't want people getting remote access to.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I did get some netgraph 1 screenshots, but Photobucket and my brain are not cooperating right now, and if I don't get to bed soon I will not be a happy camper when the alarm goes off at 5am . I'll get them posted when I get home from work tomorrow.

I was thinking more along the lines of just reporting the temps you see in the max column.

Fixed. And I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days to make sure that's what I was actually seeing.

Note to self: never post when exhausted and frustrated

First. Take your own router out of the equation. Connect directly to the ethernet port. If the problem goes away then we know the culprit.

Second. Keep track and see if it only happens during certain times of the day. Even if you never play when you get up in the morning do it for a while and see how network traffic is.

I absolutely hate shared connections for one reason. It's a 100% guarantee that somebody in the building uses a bittorrent client regularly and probably doesn't restrict the speed. In addition if you are playing in the evening then there are probably multiple people streaming netflix or tv network content. This is going to lower your connection speed tremendously and result in lost packets.

Most people won't complain because streaming video buffers so they won't see the results of a couple second connection loss. Bittorrent doesn't even hiccup over a loss of connection. Most other games will freeze for a couple seconds then resume. CoX on the other hand falls to the ground, goes into convulsions and is eventually transported to the hospital.

Took the router out and went directly from the ethernet port to the pc and nothing changed. I'm still getting the lag spikes. I'll try logging into the game tomorrow morning to see what happens, but since the connection lags even just checking email before I leave for work, I'm guessing that won't make a difference either.

I'm right there with you in hating shared connections. Getting my own connection is high on my list of "Things I Really Really Want". I just need my budget to open up so I can afford it

Anyway, here are the netgraph 1 screenshots:

Rubberbanding - The block on the very right starting with the spaced out yellow spikes is where it started. I was directly in front of my target, but he didn't see me and I couldn't use any powers because I was technically out of range. When the solid yellow chunk came out I snapped way back to where you see me.

I couldn't get a good example of the 'almost like I'm mapserving' I mentioned in the OP, so pretend these two overlap each other. The red chunk in the first shot would start making its way across the graph. Usually about halfway, maybe a little farther it hit me. I can't move or activate any powers, hence the mapserving feeling in the second shot. However everything and everyone around me can move like normal. I'm taking damage in that shot, and if that toon had Hot Feet she would be damaging the bad guy in front of her.

This was a random weird spike I caught. At that particular point I wasn't trying to move or attack anything when it started.
