VidiotMap Mac Installer Beta Tester(s) needed

So Dvandom told me there was no Mac Installer/process for VidiotMaps.

So I made one.

The process works on mine and Dvandom's machines.

I'd like to test it with others, both new users and people wanting to update, before setting it free into the wild.

Please message me in game, @scavgraphics (as I forget to check here ) if you'd be willing to give it a go.

This is an installer for the latest version of VidiotMaps, I assume?

Yes, yes, this. My CoH install is on an external drive, and it took me forever to figure out why VidiotMaps didn't want to work.

These are very valid concerns. I don't know if my process will work with nonstandard locals or not..which is why I'm looking for testers

This is done as a manual system. Building an automatic installer isn't a good idea, as the Vidiot folks aren't mac people and it would be a burden for them to load something more automatic. This is designed to work with what they already have.

As trying to meet online is too difficult to coordinate, here's the link to what I've made.

Please try it and let me know how it works. You'll know well before you get to the copy files part if it'll work on your non-standard installs

EDIT: As CuppaManga mentions below, BACK UP YOUR COH APPLICATION BEFORE TRYING THIS! Risk is minimal, and I've had 0 issues so far, but the point of the test is to find problems, so better safe than sorry!

Oh yeah! Very good point. There's been 0 problems on the test systems I've tried this on, but that's just 2 systems that I know well (mine and a friends)

Hey, if anyone has tried this out..Please let me know your results. I can't fix it or call it good with out tests

Followed the included instructions to install on a late 2007 model MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and went without a hitch.

Thanks!

Angelo...what system/os are you using?

Were the instructions too complicated? Wordier than needed? I mean really, the process is copy files a into folder b, but I was trying to account for any level of user knowledge and any problems that may come along....

Well the answer is tricky... I use Lion 10.7.4 on a custom build system (Hackintosh). OsX think is a mac pro 3.1 with an i7 3700k (Sandy Bridge) 16Gb ram and one AMD Radeon 6870 1Gb

For the installation, well the proses was really simple and was greatly illustrated.

Ah, I forgot, I use list view in finder and in that view the 2 arrow icons and the data alias are placed in the wrong order. That can be an issue with someone less expert.

grumble...I had set the folders to open in Icon view...but I guess that setting only works in a) snow leopard b) the originating sytem or c) doesn't survive the zipping.

(I'm also on a Hackentosh...a stock Dell Optiplex running Snow Leopard)

I opened the file in Snow Leopard and saw it in list view as well, since that's my default. My understanding is that in all recent versions of OS X, a directory will inherit the view preferences of its parent directory -- so if you open the zip file in a directory in list view, the directory extracted from the zip file will inherit list view, even if the directory was originally created in icon view.

Most folks get around this by having the file they send not be a directory but a disk image file -- since Mac OS X treats this as a separate volume, it retains its own view preferences when opened. Not sure how much this adds to your process of creating the download, though.

well instead of relying on a dmg you can force the order of these alias with a numeric prefix:

1-arrow ->
2-data link
3-arrow <-

Yeah..can't use a dmg file.. This is being made for the Map Pack makers, who aren't Mac Users. It's designed so they can just drop their zip file in the folder, zip it up and put a link out.

Probably easier just to get rid of the arrows and put a readme into the directory.

Old-school, I know, but less chance for confusion that way.

Just tried it out. MacBook Pro 10.6.8. Didn't have time to play just log on and peek in DA. Maps updated. Ty!

Will play in a bit and post if there were any issues. But I expect no problems.
