What CPU should I get?
Yes, you are pretty much stuck getting the same thing again unless you are lucky. The E8400 is a 65 watt, 3GHz CPU. The only way up from there with a dual core is the E8500 or E8600 which are also a 65 watt part.
As for quad cores, and power/heat is an issue, this limits you to the Q9xxxS series of quad cores. They are also rated at 65 watts but all of them run slower than 3GHz. The best would be the Q9550S which runs at 2.83GHz. Good luck finding one of them and if you do it won't be cheap.
Well there is one other possibility, it doesn't cost a lot and assuming the bios can grok it, the last versions of the Core 2 based Pentium Dual Core. They are "limited" Core 2 CPUs by messing with their memory performance by limiting the FSB to 1066MHz (vs 1333MHZ on the E8400) and only has 2MB of L2 cache (vs 6MB on the E8400). The Pentium Dual-Core E6800 is a 65watt, 3.33GHz part that may be able to give you close to the same performance you had for not a lot of money, because it isn't worth dropping several hundred dollars for keeping a Socket 775 system functioning.

You might find E8400s on ebay as it was a common processor in Dells. Many of those workstations are probably being phased out. Probably looking at $80.
Me personally, I would not want to *invest* in socket 775 tech as its old and replacement parts are getting harder to come by or expensive. You could get a much more modern CPU for similiar cost.

i would look into an h71 mb and one of the 2 core g cpu from micro center..they and new egg have combo deals..with a new mb your going to need some new ram too. if your old drives are sata and you have a good ps you can use them and your old gpu till you can replace the gpu.
I agree with the others. You're better off just moving to a new board, memory and processor. You'll pay through the nose and out the *** for a legacy processor, and usually from some no-name refurb house that's pulled it from another system that had Bob-knows-what wrong with it...
But hey! You wanted to upgrade right? Right?
My previous system had a crash, but I was able to recover most of it thanks to a person who sold a Maximus 2 Formula cheap. I now have a 560 GTX so graphics are fine, but it uses a CPU my dad had as a backup, and it gets VERY slow.
Because the board is new I do not want to switch it, so I need a socket 775. It may be a simple buy through ebay or whatever, but what socket 775 should I get? I previously used a e8400 and its speed was satisfactory so a CPU with similar single core performance, but quad?
BTW power use and temperature are a relatively big deal to me.
