to answer all of your questions
1. perma PA, my ill cold has perma PA and very minimal smash and lethal def (about 14% due to ice shield from ice mastery), if you have the PA out pretty much all the time you will take very little in terms of aggro
2. definitely do not skip phantasm, aside from it being a good mule for more rech, it still helps your dmg out and its decoys can cover for you when recasting PA so the baddy aggro does not fall on you
3. i think the suppressed value is just half of the unsuppressed, i mostly only use that power as an LOTG mule
4. i have a build, but i cant post it right now because i do not have the build on the computer i am on, but it does indeed have ice and glacial shields because they are also good LOTG mules lol
the build i curently run is at about 218% rech with hasten which is perma PA by approx 1 sec, i keep longbow lore pets on him and he can kill pretty much any GM by himself with exceptions of most flying GMs such as arachnos flier and seed of hamidon, i will post the build tomorrow when i am on the right computer lol

Perma PA is much more important than any defense . . . . unless your playstyle is to play an Illusion controller like a brute by running into melee. I have 5 Illusion Controllers at Incarnate levels, and only one of them (Ill/Time) has any kind of capped defenses. My Ill/cold does not. Ill/Cold should be waiting, invisibile, letting PA draw aggro before any attacks. If you stay at range, then Phanty's knockback isn't that big a problem.
You may want to take a look at my Illusion/Rad guide for a ton of information on the Illusion primary, plus a lot of strategies that will work for an Ill/cold.
You want to focus first on getting about 208% Recharge before worrying about Defense.

If you dont focus on defense at all than maybe a +res armor is better since you will get "some" hits anyways?
Right now I'm wondering if I should build for S/L cap and 63ish sec on PA w/o alpha or 59sec with no def whatsoever, point is +rech curve is logarithmic so the few seconds under 65 really cost alot.

Ice Blast is also great for the Blind-SW-Blast-SW attack chain, and Hibernate works as an emergency heal -- Hibernate has saved my tail many, many times. I use Frost Breath for his AoE damage, since it recharges quickly. You can build for "some" defense so that one or two purple Insps will cap your defense. The Agility Alpha works great for Ill/Cold, since it buffs Recharge, Defense AND EndMod (for Heat Loss).
But to me, Perma PA is far more important. Having a small gap allows the foes to focus on you, so you want PA recharging in under 60 seconds. I'll only worry about Defense after I have enough Recharge.
Yes, it is expensive to get all that Recharge. I get most of my Luck of the Gamblers from Hero Merits, so those are cheap. Fortunately, Ill/Cold has lots of places for LotG Recharge -- 1 or 2 in the primary (I skipped one of the invisibilities), 3 in the secondary, and one in Combat Jumping or Hover.

About the build I think I'm gonna try to avoid 0 enhenced shields since team defense is pretty much the goal of the character. But it gives some good pathes.

I reach 38% S/L def and slightly over 60sec on PA. Which are things that can be fixed with Alpha and Barrier.
Also I tried to keep PA, Phantasm and Blind with a descent amound of damage buff. I could also go Apoc on Ice Blast and make room for Glad armor unique but I think the build is expensive enough.
i built my toon more for solo use lol, honestly even on teams i forget to use the shields most of the time unless its right at beginning of the mish or when we are about to fight big like in LRSF

A friend of me started playing lately and is nearly 50. She was asking me about a good build for her toon but I'm struggling with Controllers must-have.
1- Should she aim for perma PA? S/L Cap? Ranged def Cap? S/L/R Cap? Is it even remotely possible to achieve everything? 2- Is Fantasme skippable? It seems to die a lot (well of course running with S0s on my brute's lvl 50 +4*8 doesnt really help), knocks stuff back and deal very unimpressive damage. 3- Whats the lingering def value on group invis and imp invis? Mids only gives the hidden value. 4- If anyone has a build I'd be glad, the only limitation is that the character must have Ice Shield and Glacia Shield, its not meant for solo. |
2 - I wouldn't skip it, it is a nice source of rare AoE damage on your build. Plus he can receive buffs, so in iTrial leagues he gets rather beastly.
3 - I believe it is half of what it says in MIDs. I would just check in game to be sure.
4 - I can provide a build if you are still interested. I love the toon.

Yeah its probably better than mine but the lower def on shields really makes me cry. The toon is for 2+ people only and my brute really likes Defense. But yeah, another Red Fortune is cheap and efficient (recovery is hardly an issue cause my brute uses Ageless). All in all if the troller goes for Barrier it should be fine in any cases.

Here ya go. I built this for TEAM play focusing on DEBUFFs primarily. Of course the shields were taken, but were not the focus of this build. The following things are included in the build
Pros:
-S/L/R (non-incarnate) softcap
-Perma PA with Spiritual Core alpha
-Can 3x stack sleet
-Perma Benumb
-Perma Heat Loss
-Hits +4s reliably working from 48 base accuracy
-Puts out about 20% defense to team with shields + leadership + Arctic Fog
Cons:
I never said it was cheap

As for the rest of the incarnate, you can take anything really.. I chose Ion for maximum AoE potential and degenerative for -HP (more debuffing). Destiny I guess you can go clarion and Pets can be anything with heavy AoE (that is what this build lacks, if anything).

A friend of me started playing lately and is nearly 50. She was asking me about a good build for her toon but I'm struggling with Controllers must-have.
1- Should she aim for perma PA? S/L Cap? Ranged def Cap? S/L/R Cap? Is it even remotely possible to achieve everything? 2- Is Fantasme skippable? It seems to die a lot (well of course running with S0s on my brute's lvl 50 +4*8 doesnt really help), knocks stuff back and deal very unimpressive damage. 3- Whats the lingering def value on group invis and imp invis? Mids only gives the hidden value. 4- If anyone has a build I'd be glad, the only limitation is that the character must have Ice Shield and Glacia Shield, its not meant for solo. |
2: I wouldn't skip it. It's damage that doesn't cost you animation time or endurance. Others already mentioned the benefits of the decoy.
3: No idea, my build doesn't use either (Arctic Fog + Stealth IO instead).
4: Will be a while until I can post my current build, the computer which houses all of my builds is currently at the shop for maintenance...

ranged defense "cap", it is the defense soft cap for most non-incarnate content. |
To see suppressed values in Mids: Options> Configuration> Effects and Maths > then click one of the check boxes on the right, I always choose "Damaged".
Incarnate mobs have a base to-hit of 64%, not 50.
