Question for anyone

Simple question regarding the forums. Please do not start a flaming war. I am just wondering!

Are the Moderators paid workers of NCSoft? Or are they just players with certain amount of access to moderate the forums?

Paid employees.

I think it's a mix of some being paid by Paragon Studios and some being paid by NCSoft, but I'm not certain if NCSoft actually employs any of the moderators themselves.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

As TJ said - they are paid employees. This is necessary to help keep them in line...because when it's your job you tend to follow the rules. I would not want to belong to a forum that was moderated by fellow users... I have been there in the past and it's not a pretty sight

As far as I know, all the Numbered moderators are NCSoft employess.

Like everyone else said, paid. Only way to keep the forums clean and fair I guess.

Pretty wild I can log into my forum account and log into the game, but they wont let me log into my main account to pay for the game. Says I cant log into it from this address or some crud. The heck if I remember my info from back in 2004...uggg

In actuality the reason that the Moderators are not volunteer players is because of labor laws and to limit liability.

Once a Moderator starts 'donating' 20 hours or more of their time to the game, they are providing a service for which they are not getting paid. That would be fine if Paragon Studios was a non- or not-for-profit organization, but it's not. It needs to compensate those who provide a fungible service by law, being that slavery is no longer a viable compensation package.

Even if there were no labor laws that applied, if someone gave the studio 30 hours a week of their time for several years and then had a falling out, they could sue PS for compensation. And it would be likely that a jury of their peers would agree that that person would deserve compensation, and possibly in a punitive way for taking advantage of such volunteers.

Also, it's likely that PS's employees are insured for damages they cause the company. Their weekly compensation is at stake, so, they have a vested interest in not creating any liabilities for their employer. Volunteers have no such compunction. If they fall out with the studio, they can go out in a spectacular ball of dramatic flames causing harm to the relation of the studio to its customers. No insurance company would want to cover such uncontrollable volunteers. And even in the absence of insurance, no right-thinking CEO would allow that to happen.

And so, for the longest time, since even when CoH was with Cryptic, the NCSoft lawyers have told the customer relations staff that they can't use volunteers to moderate the forums. Otherwise, I would have been given the keys to moderate the Player Guides forum long ago... certain mods wanted that to happen, the suits said 'no.'

Incorrect.

Several of the OCR team have a numbered Moderator account as well. That way if they do post something in a thread it doesn't show up in the Community Digest.

I know a few of the numbered Moderator accounts that belong to members of the OCR team, but I don't necessarily know all of them.

To give a few examples:

There used to be a Moderator called Moderator 08. He had no presence as a redname except for the Moderator 08 account. He was promoted and got a redname and chose TheOcho as his redname based on the Moderator 08 name. When they had the Bay Area Meet & Greet in San Francisco in 2010, I met Moderator 05 at the Paragon Studios office (well, the lobby anyway, that's as far as I got) who had recently started working there. Several months later we were introduced to Beastyle on the forums when he got a redname.

So, not all numbered moderator accounts are NCSoft employees. Some may be, but not all.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Thank you for the answers.
Appreciate that a flaming war didn't start or the fact the post was removed. Time to behave now. ~
