after about 5 minutes in game, the program freezes making it impossible to do anything on my computer. either i reset it or wait another 5 or 6 minutes, after which it says "city of heroes has stopped responding."

i've updated a lot of things, but nothing's working.

If someone knowledgeable could help me figure out what's wrong, it'd be much appreciated.

Is this a new thing or did it just start happening (IE: post-i23)? Were there any other recent software updates/installations? Unless something's going bad, your specs are more than sufficient from what I can tell. Have you tried pulling up the Task Manager when it hangs (IE: Control+Alt+Delete)? Sometimes other tasks like AV software like to interfere causing both to spike on CPU usage.

Also, I got a kick out of where you installed the game. ;-)

Start the game in coh safe mode.

Go to NCsoft launcher and find properties for City of heroes. Then check the launch game in safe mode. (Not windows safe mode)

If the game works, great! start adding on graphics settings.

If the game fails to work. Let us know, because its something serious.

This was my thought.

He's running at 1920x1200(odd resolution, rather square or distorted to fit widescreen, or just higher than the monitor's native unless it's some "SuperCRT"or something) which is very high. (Edit: It's just odd to me because my widescreen monitor uses 1920x1080. It must be a 4/3 aspect ratio like an LCD TV maybe.)
He also has his settings very high.

I would not be surprised if CoH is overheating for him, causing CoH to freeze due to a graphics driver reset.

1920x1200 is not an odd resolution. its commonly referred to as 16:10 resolution common in high end often IPS monitors. It was seen on 24" monitors even TN based ones until this 16:9 craze made 16:10 monitors vanish on the low and mid end.

Given that I have 2 1920x1200 monitors and have no issues with the game.

So the first step is, Todd needs to run the game in coh safe mode. Then report.

Actually, that is an odd resolution. The only monitors and TVs I have ever heard of, in this area(continental US with a Wal Mart and Best Buy so not "the boonies"), are 16x9 or 4x3.

Anyway, that resolution still seems a little high for those system specs with ultra water and shadows up.

If you want to call it "odd" go ahead. We will just have to agree to disagree on that.

There are serveral players here running 1920x1200 including our Paragon Studios hosts when they had serveral display setups running 1920x1200 for the meet and greet.

This is why *I* had said Todd needs to run in coh safe mode. Since that resets the game graphics to the min level.

I agree.
Sorry if I came across as argumentative or something. I assumed you knew "odd" was a personal opinion.

It's also why you will find monitors that are 1680x1050 and 1440x900, 16:10 was the computer industry widescreen standard until 16:9 panels flooded the market due to HDTV. These are all 16:10.

And this is why some of us react badly to your posts. You considering something "odd" doesn't mean it's unusual to those of us who are better informed but the way you phrase your answers makes it sound like you are knowledgeable on the subject when in fact you aren't. You should understand how that can irritate those of us who are in fact experts.

Actually, 1920x1200 was a rather common laptop and flatscreen LCD resolution before the 1080 craze started up.

I don't know about that. 1280x1024 was common back in in the 2003-2005 era. I find it amusing that my 8 year old laptop has a much better LCD screen than my newer 3 year old model. Nowdays, 1366x768 is on just about every laptop. Yeah, there are some with nice big resolutions, but when I get asked, "Is this laptop good?" guess what screen it has....

It's just cheap. Most 720P TVs use a 1366x768 panel. The resolution is a compromise taking the vertical resolution of the old standard 1024x768 and use that as the 9 of a 16:9 panel.

For an earlier reply, was standing at the tailor. I originally thought it might be something to do with the tailoring UI, but when it did the same thing when all I did was stand there, then turn on superjump and make a couple of leaps, figured not it.

There was a bit of time where I tried things before the thread had replies, and honestly it all confuses me.

Firstly, when "it" happens, I can tell that when it doesn't crash to an error screen, but instead freezes and eventually goes to a black screen, it's trying to do what I tell it to. Like, ctrl-alt-del. If I wait long enough, I'll see it lay down the blue & green colors like it's trying to put down the screen where you choose task manager or whatnot. Just that after 5 minutes, it's chugging so slowly that it still hasn't been able to do that, mouse pointer takes 30 seconds to move a few pixels over, that kinda thing.

The part that bugs me is I've found that there's some value of time where, if I turn on the PC and dont use it for a while, when I come back I'll be able to boot up CoH and it'll run fine. It's really a pain to to check this kind of thing, but so far it's less than 15 minutes, but more than 5 minutes. Trying to run CoH less than 5 min. after startup gets me the above problems.

I even discovered that if I play an MP3 on loop using windows media player within that 5 min window, my PC will do the same stuff half the time.

The last bit of info I have is that for the second time in the last 5 or 6 weeks, while running netflix (which I use almost every day) my screen went black for 3 or 4 seconds, then came back and I had the little word bubble that said "your graphics device stopped working, and has recovered" (or words really close to that)

No, you react badly to my post because you can't separate "uninformed opinion" from "fact".

You're putting an attitude to my text that is not there while assuming a different meaning and inserting words into my "mouth".

Don't blame me for your shortcomings.

Edit:
You, Father xmas, are one of the reasons I have to make multiple posts to clarify my meaning even after I tried to be clear in the first place.
I end up looking like I'm being condescending(and actually sometimes being condescending to those who actively earned it) because I'm trying to "spell it out with simple capital letters" instead of "assuming that supposedly smart and experienced technical people will understand my words".

That's a typical crash, especially one due to overheating graphics card shutdown and restart.

I even discovered that if I play an MP3 on loop using windows media player within that 5 min window, my PC will do the same stuff half the time.

The last bit of info I have is that for the second time in the last 5 or 6 weeks, while running netflix (which I use almost every day) my screen went black for 3 or 4 seconds, then came back and I had the little word bubble that said "your graphics device stopped working, and has recovered" (or words really close to that)
This isn't a CoH problem then...

When players come looking for help they are looking for other players who know facts and not players who include their "uninformed opinions" in their responses.

Your crack on screen resolution is like a kid in auto shop commenting that the problem the class is trying to diagnose is related to the tire size and rims because he's never seen those size tires and that model car before.

We are trying to triage players problems here. Sadly the PC as a gaming platform isn't plug and play like a console. This has been the truth going as far back as the DOS days when gamers had custom boot configurations for each game to squeeze out enough free memory to run the latest Wing Commander or SimCity 2 or Crusader: No Remorse without it crashing.

That's why we ask for both the CoHHelper and HiJack This reports. We are looking for 3rd party utilities running that we have seen causing problems in the past. We want to see if the system is a laptop or desktop since updating graphic drivers can be a real problem for certain brands of laptops or that laptops more likely have overheating problems than desktops.

And even with all that we still see cases where one player using video card X is having horrible framerates while 10 others with the same or less powerful card have the game running smooth as silk and we don't know why that one player has so much trouble. We want others to play this game we enjoy so much.

There have been players in the past who chimed in the Tech forums whose solution to all problems is a format/reinstall of Windows. Sure, that'll likely work every time since it gets rid of all the accumulated crud that may have been left behind by dozens of game's copy protection schemes, multiple video driver installs, overclocking utilities, etc. but the rest of us are looking for less drastic measures first.

And while your intentions to help others are noble and honorable, there is nothing wrong saying nothing when you can't add anything constructive to the conversation. None of us regulars on the Tech forum know everything, can diagnose every problem and that's why we don't chime in on every new thread with our "opinion". If we've seen this problem before and remember the answer (or gosh, search for forum for the previous discovered answer since none of us are Data) sure we will answer. If we haven't we may ask more questions. And if we simply don't have a clue, we usually don't say a thing.

Hypocritical post alert!

Seriously, you can't even follow your own advice.

Leave me the hell alone or you will be reported for the next jab you make at me.
Hypocrite.

Nowdays, 1366x768 is on just about every laptop. Yeah, there are some with nice big resolutions, but when I get asked, "Is this laptop good?" guess what screen it has....
Maybe it's because I was always looking for the 17"-19" screens back then. :-p

You're putting an attitude to my text that is not there while assuming a different meaning and inserting words into my "mouth".
Coming from an outsider to these spats, your posts do tend to read as if they're being declared as fact (I've done the same thing before, proof reading helps when you're tired). I realize you dont' intend them as such, but shortly afterwards somebody comes along with a 'correction' and your very next reply has the tone of a child who just had a bully take their favorite toy away (and means to get it back). I'm honestly surprised there haven't been any/more mod-smacks because of this.

Try not to take any of this as anything more than observation. I do alot of self reflection in my daily life and find places where something just didn't come out the way it was in my head. The hardest part of having a conversation via text format is learning to properly interpret eachother's meanings/emotions as we as humans are taught to do so by visual/auditory clues in the real world making our virtual world much more difficult to master for some of us.

After reading that it feels more like something's overheating/failing. First reaction is GPU, but could be the CPU straining as well.

Hmm, you might wanna double check/redo your thermal paste if possible, but I'd check the fans to make sure everything's running during the time it does this. If you don't think the temps are teh problem, then what about hard drive maintenance. When's the last time you defragged that system? Unless it's an SSD, then it'd be a good idea to run that over night for good measure anyway.

That's all I've got that I can figure through today's Fibro-Fog...
