Problems with Mobile Intel 4 Express Chipset Family

When I try to run CoH, I can't even get past the initial screen that appears without the Windows telling me that it's unresponsive and subsequently closing the game down. I think it's due to my chipset drivers being outdated, since I receive a warning prior to playing saying exactly that. Update: I've successfully updated my drivers, but am still having the same problem with the game loading.

From the looks of things you have a Toshiba model c655 laptop.

You can try here http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...t/jsp/home.jsp

Click 'download' at the top and underneath that it will expand. Choose your categories and model number and you should be taken to the driver page.

Under the 'choose your model' I put your model in the search and there seems to be a whole bunch of various model c655 so you will need to be specific. If it's a laptop look at the sticker on the bottom of it to find your model number. Should be next to the sticker that has your Windows serial key. The sticker should tell what specific version of your model you have.

Note: I have a 2009 Hewlett Packard laptop with the Mobile Intel 4 express family chipset. When I went to the Intel website and had the site check my computer it notified me that the drivers were custom and I had to get them from the manufacturer, i.e. HP.

Hope this helps.

I don't think his system is powerful enough to run the game

It's a laptop with:

Quote:
Central Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 925 @ 2.30GHz, ~2.3GHz
Memory: 3072MB
Video Device Name: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
...with Windows 7.

Whether or not he has Aero on, that's not much RAM to work with, a relatively lackluster processor and likely just as bad of a graphics chip as well.

City of Heroes may be old but it really hogs system resources, especially because of the updates. It can and does crash even when conditions are exceptional, let alone good enough.

This is the only place I could quickly find system requirements, but it is out of date by almost 2 years: [ur]http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/The_Players%27_Guide_to_the_Cities/System_Requirements
The game probably needs more than recommended(which is actually more of a minimum, given how CoH uses those resources) on that page.

I'm sorry I don't have better news. It sucks to not be able to play a game you are interested in, much more than even having poor performance in that game which you would likely have if you could/can get it running.

I don't think it's his ram. Probably his graphics and/or processor power. My laptop has the same graphics and it shows up as 64MB dedicated with a total of over 1,700MB and can't run some games without bad graphics lag. My laptop has 4GB of ram also. My desktop had 4GB of ram when I started playing CoH and never had a problem with it. My uncle upgraded his ram and gave me his old ram so I currently have 9GB and my comp can take up to 16GB max. Then again my desktop has a AMD Phenom II 3.5GB dual-core processor and a nVidia GeForce GT240 512GB graphics card. My laptop has a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5GB dual-core processor.

It could be the ram also on the OP's laptop. From my understanding, Intel graphics on laptops are not very good for gaming.

I was just pointing out the confluence of a lot of low system specs....in a laptop which tend to have overheating issues when pushed.

Quite simply, yes, this laptop is just not capable of running Co* without putting all graphics at the equivalent of 0... and even then, it's likely to be a very bad experience.

There's enough memory, but barely. I would recommend going to the Toshiba website and updating it was well, but, people...

...We're talking a single core, not very high up the food chain processor in a Celeron 925. Quite possibly one of the worst situations you can do in today's Co*: integrated graphics, slow single core, non-hyperthread processor.

I hate to say this, OP, but you may be better served getting a new box for this game, and NOT a laptop, because you can buy a box cheaper. A Core i3 at the very least, and some decent, $100-150 video card. And a 500 Watt power supply, along with 4G of ram and whatever flavor OS you want that'll still run the game. But that's just me.

---

Be that as it may, I suggest you help the situation as best you can by running MSCONFIG (Start orb, type that in, hit enter) and hit the tabs listed and turn these off, as they are taking up precious CPU and Memory resources, at least, when attempting to run Co*. You can always turn them back on later.

And seriously, you need to take out all this stuff using the Programs and Features found in the Control panel... you simply don't need all of it, and it will slow your system down if you run IE... even with Chrome going on. Assuming some of these are possible. You have way too many BHOs and Toolbars for normal use:

Also, turn off your Sidebar while you're at it, it's more memory/cpu used you can use for Co*.

And that's not where I'd stop... there's plenty above in the two tabs mentioned in MSConfig that would be wiped from my machine as well. You have way too much for that machine to be doing in the first place, IMO, and then you're adding Co* to the mix...? Of course, I'm not sure you don't *need* some of that to be running, but I'm pretty sure you don't need it *all* either.

And finally, when/if you do get in game, you should probably play with the graphics at its very lowest settings possible, and perhaps even in a lower resolution like 1024x768 or such. Anything to not require as much rendering/processing power.

Just to be clear on things, if I may use a car analogy: The game is a high strung thing that needs at least a pony car, if not a muscle car, V8 engine of not inconsiderable output to move it's awesome bulk. Or a turbocharged 6 cylinder european sports car, or something high output such as that. Even a turbo 4 might be enough, if it's got 250HP or more...

You are bringing a small 4 cylinder econobox rated at about 150HP to drag it's heftiness about. As such, *anything* you can do to 'add lightness' to the situation is going to help... but the 4cyl is still a 4cyl, and there's not much else you can do but upgrade the car at some point.

---

And as usual, YMMV, and don't hold me responsible for a laptop that quit working if that happens. Just tryin' to help, you should google some of this stuff if you feel uncomfortable turning it off or want to check on me. I'm pretty draconian with the computers, KISS is the best policy, hence, the slash and burn above.

Hope that helps in some way... but it's really not a good Co* machine. Sorry, but it's just that kind of game. Several of us use this thing to *kill* suspect computers. We run Co* to ensure the computer's not junk. If it bombs out... that computer is toast, or something in it is anyway. Co* is a special kind of computer killer.

August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.
This is houtex, aka Mike, signing off the forums. G'night all. - 10/26/2012
Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012

It's a Celeron based chip, they're not designed for anything that comes remotely close to advanced video/graphics rendering. Perfectly fine for the average user who goes online, creates word documents, listens to music, etc.

Well ya, kinda goes along side of the Celeron. They're Both cost cutting measures inteded for low spec systems.

Shush You! I don't need this last resort laptop getting wind of such things until I can afford that build we worked on a while back. ;-)
