Memphis Art 2012+

Since Ye Olde Collection was getting a bit image heavy, I figured - New art, new year, new thread.

And we start it off with a new 50, from (to me) a new artist - recommended in the last thread by BrandX, Avionetca. Two pieces coming from her. This is of an *old* Dark/Electric Defender who took a detour over to Guardian to play with the Legion for a bit, Duskvolt.

Looked a little odd, just since I'm used to aiming for a few other things - but it's also exactly what I expected with her other previews of *this* style. (The other piece - which I don't have yet - is in a different style of hers.)

Also, something I had considered before but never did do - bit of an overview of working with these people. Bit of an artist review when I try someone new.

So how was the experience?
Pros:
  • Low cost. (It's true. Real bargain for what she does.)
  • Fairly fast.
  • Distinct styles to choose from.
Cons:
  • No preview. (Which is about true for most of who I use, I'm listing it as a "con" because some may see it as a downside.)
  • No queue on her DA page - can't see how busy she is. (Which is more personal preference, and she explains it on her page.)
She took a bit longer and was a bit light on communication, but this did also hit her in the middle of a professional project (deadlines, deadlines!) so I'm not complaining. (Also, given the timeframe she got this done in, I don't expect a lot of communication back and forth - "Done!" is about right for this speed.) She's also fairly personable, and pleasant when we did communicate.

I'd definitely go to her again.

All artwork: Here on Photobucket be it all, yarrr. A few NSFW (not many.) You've been warned.

Cool art! And I must agree with your review... About the only change I would make is go from "Real Bargain" to "Way too cheap." That girl seriously needs to charge more.

CR - I never noticed her saying she colored others lines but then again I wasn't looking.... And I would definitely love to see the result of a collab between the two of you!

She replied back that she is willing to color my lines
and that she has done it once before (years ago).

What I've really wanted to do for some time now is come up with a "master" drawing
and get all the different color artists here and on DA to color it in their own style.

From MemphisBill's review (and what others have said) Avi sounds like she might
be a good starting point. Apologies for the slightly off topic comments Bill.

Shhhh! Don't let her know that!

heh...She is cheap! But part of me thinks thi is due to her charging based on time spent. She whips a lot of these out so fast, some people might start going "100 dollars for what you did in 3 hours?"

I think some of her lack of communication comes from english not being her first language.

And nice piece MB!

Hehehe <^_^> YAY Duskvolt! Neat art style too <o.@> very thin. Must poke around this person's DA page methinks.

Well, she seems to keep forgetting the second piece I'd commissioned... *sigh*

So, gave someone else a try a friend mentioned looking at, Takumy. Got this done fairly quickly - also duskvolt, obviously!

Pros:

  • Cost, again. Lineart or basic colors. (And as you can see, asking for the colors, I got the lineart as well.)
  • Very fast. This was done over the course of a day.
  • Very communicative. She asked questions, asked for other references if she couldn't pick something out - and as a plus is fairly personable.
  • Queue on journal
  • Overall pleasure to work with.
I was debating putting "No preview" in as a con, but at the speed this got done, that would almost be unfair.

Another I debated listing as a "con" but decided against - there's no option for a more detailed scene, with background, etc. However, that's more of a "shoppers guide" than an actual con, I think. Just something to be aware of.

Next piece we move on to someone else - as subject and artist. Timeframe... don't know yet.

... oh, if you notice she doesn't have a tail on this piece, that's actually correct for this costume. It comes and goes depending on costume, so as far as I'm concerned, both pieces are "right."

And another new (to me) artist - warlordwardog (shane brathwaite)

Quite frankly, seeing his samples, I could *not* pass up the prices - even when the exchange rate jumped around a bit. This is my newest 50, an Arch/MM blaster, Madison Longshot:

Pros:
  • Just look at it....
  • Price. Another "This is seriously underpriced for this," AFAIC.
  • Fairly fast. We're not talking a day or a week turnaround, it does take longer, but this was commissioned less than a month ago. (I'm showing June 30 as his response. So... yeah.)
  • Lots of communication. (Including personal bits like a delay from getting sick.)
  • Process: Paid (requested 50% up front, I went 100,) poses, questions on specifics, final line-proof, and this.
Cons:

Honestly, about the only thing I can say "con" is to watch the exchange rate, part of why I paid 100% in full as opposed to the 50/50 he requests for color. From when I first looked at him to when I commissioned, there was about a $5 difference (as I recall.) While not huge, it's there. Lineart is all up front anyway.

All in all, a fairly personable artist, again rather underpriced IMHO, and very pleasant to work with.

Great piece by Warlordwardog! And I have to agree with pretty much everything you said. He is great to work with, does great work and I could easily see him charging far more than he does. I suspect he's one of those artists who just don't have the viewers and thus the demand they deserve so who don't really know their own worth...

That Warlordwardog piece is fantastic!! Nice one

Heh. You're not seeing things. We were both looking at it going... "That looks... a little odd." He sent a tweaked version and I swapped it out.

I should really stay away from these forums or I might go broke. That Warlordwardog piece is beautiful.

So... I have a few pieces in the pipeline (or rather I'm in the queue for them.) Finally got a couple back, these from Cric.

I'd had this little "idea" bouncing around for some of my villain girls - a "bail bond fund" calendar. No, not actually being done as a calendar, just a reasonf or the "cover" shot - though I've started thinking about months.... which led to these two.

Wraith for january:

And Deadly Diana for February... stealing someone's heart.

(Gotta love Photobucket's thumbnails.) The wink from Di just sold it for me.

Pretty much what I said. Seeing if I can get him to do the most recent MB I finished (which fit what I had in mind, but couldn't make, for the original character.)
