Alpha slot when Exemplaring

When you drop below 50, or 47, or down to 15.... Does the Alpha slot ability still work, or does it just come into play at 50? I am creating a build that will be doing a lot of exemplaring (my main task force build for rolling with friends), and I want to make an efficient build for this.

All incarnate stuff is available until 45 (obviously except Incarnate Shifts [Level Shift is kept]), because you get stuff five levels above your exemplar level. At 44, everything cuts off because you only have access up to 49.

So, if you plan to exemplar a lot, it's probably best to make an all around decent build with no holes, as opposed to making a build that pushes absolute max performance at 50, but is crippled by being way under-slotted for something (end usually, but also recharge, and damage happen a lot, too).

However, many caveats and exceptions to this rule, though.

And, just in case in needs to be said, keep in mind levels of IO sets and the set bonuses they give when building an 'exemplar' build.

I keep 2 builds, 1 for exemp, the other for lv 50 content. The exemp build is a cheap build, costing around 200 mil or less. The incarnate build has all the fancy ios.
A fairly quick way to slot the exemp build is to buy lv 30 ios and cheap uncommon sets. I do suggest the following frills:
- lv 21 perf shiftr +end
- st prot +def
- kismet +acc
- st prot kb, if melee toon doesnt have a kb prot pwr

An exemplar build and a regular one is an excellent way to go. If you can afford 2 build, it's a very nice way to go. However, f you exemp more than you do non-exemplared stuff, you can still do 1 cheap build and 1 expensive one, just make the exempted build the expensive one.

That said, I believe the Performance Shifter +end is a proc, and therefore, the level is irrelevant, unless as part of the set and then only for the set bonuses, which will follow the normal set bonus rule. The proc (all procs) always work normally while exempted, assuming it is slotted in a power you don't lose.

I appreciate the answers. My build is a Dark Melee/Willpower Brute. This is strong and easy on SOs. It is very strong with I/Os (and I use a lot of tuned for exemplaring goodness). With the Alpha (Core Paragon Vigor) it really becomes silly strong. I will build for 50, and have to settle for somewhere between strong and very strong on low level TFs. Because that way at 50 I can squeeze off a few more floating enhancer slots and still hit cap+stupid on heal. PS, i really make the build lazy, cause I take Energy Mastery, and use Procs all over it. It's truly my relax and grind build. Thanks for all the great suggestions and info.

One cheap way to split the difference between level 50 build and exemplar builds is to use level 41 IOs instead of level 50s. The difference in enhancement value is minimal, and you'll keep your set bonuses on many of the common weekly task forces. Or use level 30-32s and take advantage of enhancement boosters. Purple, PVP, and ATOs also are nice for exemplaring (though they aren't particularly cheap).
