Does Shield/Battleaxe get better?

Alright so... I'm level 20 on my Shield/Axe tanker. I know that's not every high, but my endurance problems are so enormous at this point that I'm really, really tempted to give up.

I jump into a fight at +0/x1, and after a single group I'm entirely out of endurance.

Obviously I don't yet have SOs, and I need some more slots/end reducers... but I'm really just wondering if it's even worth it at this point.

It is and end hog.... I find that I have to manage my shield toggles based on the situation and MUST shut off ALL travlle powers (sprint included) during fights. At lvl 43 (where mine sits) It's a monster. I'd say hang in there.

Important to point out.... I love every power set combo. I lvl most of them to lvl 40. I avoid 50s cause I got too many as it is and I feel like I have to Incarnate them =(

Your attacks are probably doing your endurance in.

Beheader isn't bad at 5.2 end per attack and even Chop is ok with 8.53. But Gash uses 10.19 and Swoop is 11.86 end/attack. Without end reduction in them you will suck yourself dry very quickly. Once you get to lvl 22 the SO enhancements will help. I also try and do a round off tip missions right of the bat so that I can get A-merits. 2 of them will net me a Miracle unique asap.

As far as the long haul, I think you'll enjoy the combination. Easy to soft cap, and some nice AoEs and Cones. The earlier levels are always a bit rough on tanks as they do mediocre dmg/end in the early stages. SOs will definitely help.

Thank you both immensely! I guess I'll just have to keep slogging then. Tank is something I'm not really used to just yet, but I like the idea of axe-and-shield a lot so >_> I shall make it work.

When it comes to tanker toggles or attacks the effect per end is fair. With attacks though some have faster cast times than others so they won't be allowing for as much end recovery.

Every concept can be sorted out, treat it as a challenge. Rangle is right in that the attacks will lower your endurance quickly and your toggles will slow your endurance recovery down.

It can be pretty awesome later on anyhow. I do Shield/Mace, so not too dissimilar.

If you follow a rule in which you try to use aoes on 4 or more, cones on 2 or more you should be getting decent dam per end out of your attacks, ofcourse why hit 4 when you could hit 10 and why hit 2 when you could hit 5 can be questions to ask yourself.

I love my lvl 50 SD/BA tank even if it is a end hog, but I do have 1 thing to say bout the tank SHIELD CHARGE. But as pointed out the attacks do take a lot of end.

I have a shield/axe at 50. Looking at his build, the END issues couldn't have been bothering me too much. If it had, I would have had lots more IO's dedicated to +recovery. He has only 13% worth of set bonuses and doesn't even have the Miracle +recovery unique slotted. He DOES have the Performance Shifter +END, but I put that on almost every toon.

I'm thinking the END issues went away when I IO'ed him. Most IO sets end up giving you at least 30 or 40% END reduction in every attack and that makes a huge difference.

Having said that, it sounds like you are doing significant soloing with your tank. I generally avoid that. In my opinion, low level tanks are simply deficient in damage and END usage is often a concern. They're great to solo once I have IO'ed them and have all (or most) of their AoE's. Since I IO at around level 33, and shield/axe gets the 'good attacks' between 26 and 38, yeah, he'd be kind of scrubby at lower levels.

I would say you should definitely stick it out to level 22. At that point, if you can have 4 slots in Stamina with 3 SO's and the Perf Shifter +END, your entire play experience should change dramatically. And yes, it gets a lot better. You'll have Shield Charge and 3 AoE's in your secondary. Lots of fun.

Axe matures late for tanks as you get your AoE's last. In the mid to late 30's you should gel together.

As for END, 22 == SO's. Slot for END and you should be fine.

Another thing that I think could be part of the problem is that, as mentioned by the post above me, shield/axe gets all its aoes later on. Shield charge at 26, whirling axe at 28, cleave at 35, pendulum at 38....

So, for now, not only are you not on SOs yet, you're also still stuck beating up every foe individually. While AoEs cost more end per use than single target attacks, they usually end up being far more endurance *efficient* overall than those ST attacks simply because of hitting multiple targets. Those three axe aoes might cost 13-14 end each, but if you hit even just 3-5 targets apiece with them (depending on the attack - the PBAoE is likely to more easily hit more targets, of course, while cleave is harder) you'll be vastly outstripping any of your single target attacks in overall damage dealt per endurance spent. Getting up a decent string of AoEs can do wonders for your overall endurance efficiency in terms of how much endurance you actually have to spend to defeat a given quantity of foes - if you work to leverage them.
