Constant Freezing/Crashing (It will only run in safe mode temp)

Windows 7 6b-bit. I would love to actually play this game ^_^

(I've tried every help suggestion in every forum I could find)

So the game won't work at all, it freezes at the white screen with the hero every time while loading. Though it will boot using safe mode, but when it does it constantly crashes and freezes randomly and non-stop. Barely created a character (took like an hour or so to make the char because of crash/freezing in safe mode).

Already check the drivers and they were the most recent available, but I went ahead and upgraded to the newest Beta drivers anyway to see if it'd fix the problem.

And before anyone suggests it, I've already tried it with and with out bitdenfer 2012 running....

Just a heads up, part of the tried everything I've found online includes deleting the cache file in CoH directory as well as deleting the CoX folder amongst other things.

Well that was an eyeful. I saw a bunch of "file missing" entries and I'm curious as to whether this GPU's strong enough. I don't know what a Series 2 chip is, but someone else is bound to make it here soon enough with clearer answers. Granted, you're playing on a low rez (15" screen?) so there's less to draw.

The Asus laptops are notorious for being a pain in the rear when you upgrade video drivers on them. (Actually, its not unique to Asus)

Once any laptop manufacterer sells you a laptop, they don't ever have to update the video drivers for the thing. Short of defective drivers.

I'd do a safe mode un-install of the video drivers and then re-install the latest "official Asus" drivers for your model of laptop.

The laptop is also a couple of years old, make sure its not a heat issue. A good blast of compressed air can do wonders for laptop temps. (Also, using a good laptop cooler)

I've played CoH for years on a system with the same GPU/resolution/CPU/RAM (upgraded to 8GB a couple months ago), so I can say it's quite capable of playing CoH at pretty high settings (right around the pre-UM max).

If his system is around the same age as mine (quite likely), it's very likely the fan has gotten very clogged with dust, causing it to heat up very quickly. I wasn't having crashes, but the system would get very hot and struggled with the settings it used to do fine with.

Taking off the bottom cover and shooting some compressed air in through the exhaust vent cleared out all the dust in short order (make sure to do it outside... and use small controlled bursts to avoid putting too much pressure on any fans/internals).

As for upgrading drivers? I've ignored OEM video drivers, since I've already found neither Dell nor HP gave a crap. I'll occasionally upgrade the drivers with a well-reviewed, WHQL driver from here, and never had any issues (I'd be much more hesitant if my system had Optimus graphics). Is there any OEM that actually bothers to keep up with them? I've never heard of any doing so...

I noticed the "file missing" entries also... those seem quite odd, I don't think I've noticed those on previous logs people have posted. Seems quite likely that it could be a clue.

The the "file missing" error is fine, they were removed on purpose and would not affect the game from starting.

My screen is a 15.6" HD (1366x768)/Full HD (1920x1080) LED backlight

This is an ASUS G51VX 1GB dedicated DDR3 on the video....

I tried on the newest OEM drivers and then tried again after updating the video drivers to the newest NVIDIA ones, still nothing.

Also the system is not hot at all, cleaned it and blasted it with air prior to wipe/clean and install of Win7.

The system plays all the other games NP and on highest graphics (LOTRO, Champions-Online, Perfect World, Battle of the Immortals) and plays WoW on medium settings.....

Could you check Window's Event Viewer for any logged errors from CoX crashing? That might give a clue if there's anything there.

You can access it by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer. Inside Event Viewer, they would be under Windows Logs -> Application.

That's two totally different resolutions, a monitor only has one native resolution. According to the dx diag, it's 1366x768, just like my system (I suspect you have the exact same machine). Again, it should have no problem running CoH, so it's certainly not a performance issue.

I can't recall if it was this ASUS machine, or a prior HP machine, but one of them had some OEM service running in the background that would seriously screw up CoH. One thing you could try is killing all background services/applications (making sure to be on the Elevated version of Task Manager) starting CoH. There's a couple windows services that you can kill, but will then result in the system bringing up a countdown until it forces a reboot, so watch out for those (I think only one or two do it... sadly I can't recall which off the top of my head!).

Apples. Oranges.

Those games are DirectX games. City of Heroes is OpenGL.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

As for the screen res, I just clipped it from ASUS' website.

I've also tried closing every non-mandatory service before starting the game and same result.... (unless I missed one, or closed one I shouldn't have..)

Yeah I have the G51VX ASUS with the white glowing lid...

I guess I've never played an OpenGL game on this laptop (it's new)... Is there an OpenGL testing app somewhere that I could check for info about the comp and possible problems (I know my tablet has one)...
