Weird stop/start graphic glitch

Posted

For a month or so now, when I log into CoH, I get this strange graphic glitch where the motion seems to stop, then start again. This happens about three times a second. If I stand my toon in front of the door the tram you can see the words rolling across the marquee actually stop and almost back up before continuing.

This glitch is so bad that it makes me not even want to start playing, but instead reboot the game up to 6 or 7 times in an attempt to boot without the glitch. Its bad. Sometimes I'll restart my PC up to 3 times. Usually, but not always the glitch will go away after going thru all that nonsense.

I have a VIP account and have sent multiple petitions while in game but so far am going around in circles with them, so I thought I'd try this next. The PC itself is kinda old but it runs pretty much any game I want. Here are the specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6720 CPU @ 2.66 GHz with huge Zalman cooler
MSI board
3 Gigs RAM
Vista 32 Bit
GTX 260 nVidia video card
soundblaster xtreme gamer sound card
Corsair 650w PSU

That sounds like a dying graphics card, but no way to tell without running diagnostics.

Use the command "/showfps 1"("0" to shut it off) in game and look in the upper right corner of your screen while this is happening.
Does that show a low frame rate?

Otherwise, are you just referring to moving/changing objects?
Anything that moves or changes and needs to be synchronized with other players(and many things that are private and don't need to sync, sadly) will stop and reverse any time there is network lag("/netgraph 1" to see that).

It being a graphics glitch or just network lag, either way, would not surprise me with the state of the game currently.

I loaded up and played NFS Undercover to see if I'm getting graphic issues across the board. Nothing. Looked awesome with everything cranked up. This issue is intermittent and judging by the 60 views and 2 replies, I'm guessing I am the only one with this problem. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. What could be a contributing factor is that I live a few miles outside of town and can only get DSL at about 1.5 MBps. Terrible I know, but its usually good enough for any online game Ive tried.

I'll try that frame rate thing the next time it happens.

I am sure you aren't the only one with that problem. There are times when I get occasional hiccups/stutters...I have an older puter, but the game still runs great. When I notice an issue like yours, I type one of the following commands. (Sometimes I hit them all, and seems to clear up the problem.):

/reloadgfx (the screen will go wonky for a bit, as graphics are reset)

/neterrorcorrection 1

/sync

I actually have these three things set as keybinds. Another thing you might try is to do a couple of things before logging into the game. First, run the disc cleaner. Then, open the 'run' command and type
ipconfig /flushdns

Be sure and shut down any background items you don't need. Defragging on a regular basis also can keep problems at a minimum.
I hope this helps in some way. The above suggestions have kept my old putersaurus able to play CoH with little to no issues. Good luck!

Okay, I tried /reloadgfx, /neterrorcorrection 1 and /sync, as well as before the game is launched the run ipconfig /flushdns several times and the glitch wasn't fixed. I guess this problem is more serious than I originally suspected. I'd rather not cancel my VIP status but if I can't play the game without the glitch, it'd be stupid to keep paying them. I also ran the /showfps issue (the issue was in effect when I ran it) and this is what I got: 43.69 (22.8 m/fm). I don't know what this number means.

That means you are getting 43 frames per second, when your monitor and the game want to push it up to 60 frames per second.

Essentially, you have graphics slowdown. You should lower your settings or maybe it is just that area that is the problem(Imperial City is notorious for slowdown).

Anyway, your frame-rate is not 60 so it will stutter anytime it encounters increased load. This can also include seeing things move backwards, especially the random citizens.

Your best bet is lowering graphics settings until you get 60fps constantly.

Edit @Healix:
What does "neterrorcorrection" do? I have never even heard of that command. It may help my connection if it does what I think it does.

This, it's much easier to start at the baseline of GFX settings and step your way up to tollerable than to start at the top and wonder what happens if....

I believe it has something to do with stack overflow, and can help correct packet errors.

The wiki doesn't list it as a command, but the game doesn't give an error when it is used.
It also doesn't seem to do anything, aside from maybe making my connection worse when it is laggy.

I wish we had official word on this.

You'll have to give us more info if you expect people to try and trackdown this error. I have a similiar Q9550 w/ GTX 260 216c but I would need to know your gfx settings to test.

I actually discovered that command right here on the forums. If /neterrorcorrection 1 does nothing it was suggested to try /neterrorcorrection 2. I try it when I get laggy and it seems to help, but maybe it's because my puter is so old.
