Since I downloaded the last patch, I cannot log in at all to the game. I enter my password and it just freezes. I have to restart the computer for the process to stop. Nothing changed on my computer, except the last patch of course. I reinstalled video drivers and still have the same issue. Anyone else experience this?a

HiJackThis
CoH Helper can't get my DxDiag so here is the DxDiag itself.
This kinda makes me think something else could be going on here.

Well it's not giving me any tools for trying to figure it out. Dxdiag works fine by itself. I didn't change anything on my computer, only the patch changed. All my other games are fine. It just freezes after the login on CoH.

Assuming your system is configured for automatic updates from Microsoft, this last Tuesday was Microsoft's monthly push of patches and it did include an update to NET 2.0 which the updater uses.

Edit: Oops, never mind. Some reason I thought this was a thread about an NCLauncher problem.

OpenGL issue perhaps?

How do I verify that? Download an OpenGL stand-alone rendered? All else works fine like I said, it's just that the game freezes completely, it shows the Win7 equivalent of the hourglass.

I'm still waiting for an answer from NC support. This is maddening! Thanks for the help.

I tried repairing, running in all compatibilities, and am also waiting on reply for support. I was able to get to the select server screen once but it still froze. im thinking about uninstalling some of the recent windows updates and see if that works?

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend it. Seems like too much trouble for . Father Xmas mentionned it because he thought it was a launcher problem. I do not believe I had any update installed recently anyway.

I'm not sure How exactly you'd test it (was kinda hoping someone else would chime in like they normally do), but many times when I read on here that CoX is having issues while other DirectX based games are fine, then I normally see something OpenGL related as being the culprit. Again, I hope somebody a bit more silicon-blooded responds with something more helpful.

Are you able to log into the beta server, or the training room?

What are the specs of the system you're using?

I haven't tried any of them, I don't have them installed. I'll try that tonight or tomorrow night. I will also try to re-install DirectX, maybe another game that was installed changed the version?

Specs:

  • Windows 7
  • Processor: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
  • 4GB Ram
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260, 896 Mb
  • Motherboard: ASUS P5Q-PRO

Still no answer from the NC support website.

Test server worked!

How do I reset my settings on the main game without reinstalling?

Note: I am running from Steam but even without it, it doesn't work.

By any chance do you have any third party firewall software running?

From my personal experience, I've found that sometimes, some of the COH game servers are blocked by certain firewalls.

This is the direction I have recieved so far. ill try it out and post results.

(Hello,

Thank you for contacting NCsoft Technical Support.

As a troubleshooting step, please try running the game in Safe Mode with the steps below:

1. Start the NCsoft Launcher

2. You can either right-click on City of Heroes or click on the drop down arrow to bring up the Launcher menu.

3. Select properties in the menu screen.

4. In the properties window, put a check in the box next to "Launch in Safe Mode" then click on "OK"

5. Click on the "Play Now" button in the main launcher window.

This will force the game to run at the minimum graphics/video settings. This is not intended as a permanent solution, but this is being requested so that we can gauge whether these lowered settings will have any effect on the problem at hand.

If this improved the issue, then, while in Safe Mode, set "Advanced Graphics Settings" to "Disabled" and move the "Graphics Quality" slider to a setting that provides good balance between performance and quality. If you'd like you can then enable the advanced graphics settings and continue to tweak the settings.

We look forward to your reply.

Regards,
Allan

I can attest to this sort of thing. If something about the most recent patch changed some little detail somewhere in the way CoH connects to the server, it's entirely possible that the change may match a misguided security program's definition of a connection that should be blocked. It'd be odd, in that case, that the test server would work, but hey, maybe whatever little thing that was changed has been changed back on the test server's build.

Also, are you connected to the internet directly or through a network managed by someone else? In my case, the problem was when a patch back around... 2009? changed something in the login process such that my college's network security package blocked the connection as suspicious. I had to go talk to the IT people to get it unblocked. If you're on a network managed by someone else, it might be worth seeing if they are actually seeing any connection attempts come out from your computer, and if so whether they're being blocked.

launch in safe mode did not work. checked to make sure game and launcher will be aloud to connect, still nothing. have'nt tried test server yet.

Come to think of it, my firewall finished the automatic rule mode last week. Maybe it's related? I had to add a rule manually for the test server to work. I'll test it tonight by re-adding the normal game manually in my firewall rules.

I'm connected directly to the Internet. Even have DMZ activated for my computer.

No answer from NC yet, usually they're faster. But Black Pebble is here!

From what you've been describing, I think what could be happening are network traffic issues.

You're freezing up after entering your user/pass. That's when your client would be negotiating with the login server. Problems at that stage often mean you cannot connect to the login server due to network issues.

If you can get past that, but then get frozen selecting a server, in SOME (but not all cases) it could mean another network issue.

This is because the login server, and the game servers are on a variety of IP ranges. And if your firewall doesn't recognize those IP's as valid, it may be blocking access to them as a precaution.

That's why I asked you to try logging into the test server, as that's in a different IP pool.

Yeah but you're the closest I got to an official response after 3 working days...

I managed to get it working! I remember that I add a symbolic link for the my CoH folder pointing to my C: drive so I moved it to the "official" location and got it working after doing a repair. Your idea of the Test server made the difference.

Thanks everyone!!! Good luck scarebanks! You might be better opening your own thread though.

well, i was able to get the game running. Support had me try to update my geforce software. as far as windows was concerned my card was fully updated, but nvidia knew better. i tried to update the card but windows was being a pain in the butt and wouldn't allow an install. so i uninstalled the card fully then re-installed and stopped windows from trying to update it. only problem is i am running CoH on lower graphics due to my card not fbeing fully updated. damb windows.

hopefully it will work for you.
