I don't know where to put this

since the bug section specifies that it''s not for forum issues I've been trying to get help with my inability to log into the forums for nearly half a year without any reply. This is y second successful login in that time. Normally I log in, get the confirmation screen, and then am redirected to the prior page. I am not logged in there, and my account history shows no activity, although my name is listed at the bottom of the page as viewing the page. I've had this happen with multiple computers, multiple OS platforms, and multiple browsers. I just want to be able to use the forums. And for the record since I know there will be a question on the matter, yes, I'm VIP.

Thanks for listening.

I want to both confirm this and expand on the subject. Viking has had a problem logging into the forums for a VERY long time. The forums would claim they've logged on, but would then immediately log off upon page load. Viking has no problem logging into the actual game, but the forums just never seem to work. We've tried contacting Customer Support but that didn't work. I encouraged Viking to make this thread because I fear the login issues will return and I wanted the problem to get at least some exposure, because at this point, I have not the slightest idea what could be causing this login problem across many different browsers, operating systems and physical machines.

I've seen this if you are behind some proxies. I use a "web accelerator" which acts as a proxy and I needed to make an exception in the proxy software for this forum or I would see exactly the same thing Sam described.

It may be a case of same symptoms, different cause. I'm just tossing this out there as a possibility.

Find someone you trust to try logging in for you. That would quickily find out if its your personal issue or a bug on your forum account.

Change your password after they try it.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Agreed.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

As I understand it, Viking tried different machines from different locations with the same result. I'd have to double-check, but I remember those tests were exhaustive and their results perplexingly non-productive.

Bad news - it is as I feared. I caught up with Viking in-game, and he's lost access to the forums again. I'm actually posting on his request to provide an update and some more information. What follows is a direct quote out of in-game chat that I just took the chat headers out of and put into the same paragraph:

I had also completely disable antivirus and antispyware on one and used another with none installed.
*edit*
Correction: Viking just informed me he has an e-mail from Customer Support about the problem, which is something I've been trying to facilitate for a few months now. It apparently arrived last night at some point, so it looks like the issue is finally being addressed. Zwill, if this is your hand at work, thank you

I could not sign into the forums for months after I resubbed. I got incorrect password messages, although I could sign into my account and into the game. One day I tried and it just worked and has ever since.

of course it still won't stay signed in

There was a database error of some sort which would insist your password was wrong. I don't think they ever fixed it, but you could avoid it by simply changing your password from your PlayNC account, which would fix it in the forums database.

This isn't the case with Viking, however. His password is being accepted, he's being told the log-in was successful, and the very next thing he did would once again show him not logged in. Effectively, the forums claimed the login was correct, but the process never happened, as far as I can infer.

Well, now. Thank you for the early/late gift, Father Xmas.

Good to see you posting again, Viking. If you can still post by this time tomorrow, I think we can consider this a success. You can explain the thing with the web accelerator if you want, or I can relate what I remember from what you told me instead, if you want. I figure people should know

So it's basically what Father Xmas said?

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Yes, but I meant more the specifics. It turns out that though Viking had disabled his router, his modem had "router capabilities" and had its own software running in the background, which included an undocumented web accelerator. He says he's spoken with his ISP and they never mentioned this. Why this is the case between multiple locations we're still not sure, but Viking said he'll investigate whether the other locations don't have one of those installed, as well.

That's what I was referring to as an explanation.

All of this is still theory until we see Viking post again today, though. Last time he got access to the forums, it lasted all of a day and he was back to the same old problem, so I'm not counting this as a success until it's proven to last.

Just throwing this out there: Is it potentially browser related? Has he tried logging in with a variety of browsers to confirm/deny this?

Personally I often solve various site issues switching between Firefox and Opera.

I tried Firefox, IE, Chrome, and Opera.

Besides Sam and Father Xmas, I would like to thank someone on Exalted who tried to help me back in October with this problem. I regrettably have forgotten their name, though. Sorry.

So you're still able to post? Sweet! That's good to hear. I hope you retain this ability, Viking. I don't know if I helped any, but I'm glad you seem to have that problem sorted
