Hi Everyone,

It seems almost impossible for me to play anything other than a Scrapper. Don't we all love to see that wonderful "CRITICAL!" pop up as we demolish our foes?!?!

Well, here's another one of my scrappers that is approaching level 50 (I posted my DB/WP scrapper here). What do you think of the build for this one below?

Nah, it looks ok. I'd drop one of the Scirocco's in T-strike for a force feedback proc, and try to get another slot into Active Defense -double stacking it increases your DDR (could easily pull a slot from SJ and still be over softcap on your defenses). I'm not a fan of spring attack due to its long recharge, especially on a single slot. You could also do a bit of shuffling to squeeze a 5th lotg +rech in there and still hit your softcaps.

Personally, I'd probably trim a bit and grab an epic aoe but it's fine as-is if you're not doing much farming.

Well, I have been told that the Red Fortunes are a waste, and I should be slotting more for S/L def.

Is that right?

And I would like to do farming with this character. Which Epic AOE do you reccomend?

Not sure why someone would tell you to drop red fortunes for s/l def. Shield are positional defense, so you shoul dget positional defenses. melee, ranged and aoe. Which you have in your build. It's fine.

What Neko said re: S/L def

Fireball gives the most dmg, but the AoE in Mu Mastery can be had with one less power pick and fits better thematically if that matters to you.

Thanks guys! I will keep moving forward with this build, tweaking it based on your suggestions, focusing on melee, ranged and AoE defenses. I am also looking at Fury Flechette's post on these builds (yes, I know they are legacy builds).

So, should I still keep the Red Fortunes six slotted to get the Ranged defense?

As for Mu Mastery, it definitely seems to fit more thematically. But then I would need to a) forgo Physical Perfection, which helps with endurance recovery, and b) it would require going villain, which would counter my character's bio (yes, I know too much role playing). Hi Everyone!

Ok, so I change things up drastically. I now have 47.3% melee, 43.3% ranged, and 47.3% AoE. I also have 32.3% S/L.

Can someone explain to my why a scrapper with this build requires positional defense over typed (S/L)? Yes, my attacks are PBAoE, but I also tend to get a lot of folks around me hitting me. Wouldn't I want 45% S/L??

Anyway, here's my new build. I am trying to be a damage machine, that doesn't die a lot, and might be able to do some farming. Please let me know what you think I did right, and what I did wrong. Thank you!

The game reads your highest defence value - if you are attacked by fire blast, a fire ranged attack, the game reads your fire and ranged defence and rolls off whichever is highest. Shield gives positional defence and consequently should be built for as you can bump it up a lot higher with IOs over typed defences.

On to the build.

> 5 slot aegis into tough and 6 slot performance shifters into stamina, that should cover AoE
> 3 slot LoTG into all def toggles apart from grant cover and combat jumping
> I personally like to 6 slot numinas into true grit
> slot the 2 3% def uniques into OwtS
> should allow for 5 slotting oblits into thunder strike and a force feedback +rech proc

Thats all I can see on the iPad ATM but obviously still need to pad out the defences with mako and touch of deaths etc.

To further clarify how defense works:

Most attacks are flagged as both typed and positional. As an example, energy blast is flagged with ranged, smashing, and energy. The game will check against the player's highest defense value. So, if the player has 40% ranged defense, 12% smashing defense, and 33% energy defense, then the 40% ranged value will apply. The lower values become irrelavent.

There are a few attacks that are flagged as typed but not positional, but these are few and far between (and mostly psi). There are also a few attacks that are completely unflagged (hamidon, some other 'special' attacks).

Also, you may wish to monitor your defense in-game, which can be done by clicking on powers ->combat attributes ->defense, then right click the value you wish to monitor. You may find your defense is being debuffed on those occasions you're getting hit a lot (Cimerorans and Arachnos are a couple examples of baddies who do this). edit to add: Also, some baddies have to hit buffs that make defense less effective. For example, it takes 59% def to floor the hit chance of iTrial baddies. Venged-out Nemesis are mean for defense oriented toons, Devouring Earth drop Quartz crystals, etc. It may be worth keeping an eye on your combat logs, which will show the enemy's chance to hit you.

Fury Flechette's old post has some great builds in it, just be aware that it's a bit out of date and the hami-o exploits no longer work.

Maybe something like this?

If you can swing that glad armor 3%, this could be better... it's pricey (though getting less so thanks to converters).

Recovery is a little bit borderline at 2.04 end/s with accolades, certainly playable for pve. May find you'll occasionally need to munch a blue while farming. Recharge is a bit lower than I'd like, too. I'd prefer to run musculature alpha on a scrapper... however, t4 spiritual on this build gets you over 2000hp, not-quite-perma hasten, and double stacked AD.

@Everyone, Ok, so let me review. let's say I have 17% S/L, 45% ranged, 43% AoE and 43% melee. If someone hits my scrapper with a smashing blow that also is flagged as positional, the game will find the highest defense I have 9ranged) for positional defense and use that? Or does the attack need to have be specifically a ranged attack?

@EJI, Thank you. I like this build. Should I just skip using the ATOs? I have all 6 already for this scrapper. I have another TW/EA scrapper level 43 I am playing that I could give them too...

As for Alpha, I was hoping to use Agility to get the 45% end and 33% recharge. Is that not wise? Also, what is AD?

Hi Everyone!

I have a very weird conundrum. Working with Mids, I came up with 2 very, very similar builds. But they do differ just a little bit. And so, the stats differ jsut a little bit.

EXCEPT FOR ONE THING

In damage %, one has 34.4% and the other has 96.2%. How is this possible?!?!!? I have checked everything, and I cannot see what is causing this. So, I am appealing to all of you to help me.

I am posting both of them with every stat I could so you can help figure out what is causing this.

Okay, I found it. The build with 96.2% damage buff was somehow bugged with Against All Odds. Turning it on and off, it seemed to give a gigantic buff. I removed the power, added it back in, and everythign seemed to work normall again. So, without further ado, please evaluate the following build. And let me know if 34.4% damage buff is too low

I can replace the Scirocco's Dervish sets on thunder Strike and Jacob's Ladder with Obliterations. That increases my damage quite a bit on those powers but lowers my AoE DEF from 51.6% to 45.5%

In general, you can either build for "positional" defense (melee, ranged and AoE) or "typed" defense (smashing/lethal, fire/cold, energy/negative, etc.) and pretty much ignore the other sort. Each secondary already starts off with one sort of defense better than the other, just using SO's. Willpower works best by adding to the inherent smallish typed defenses, while Super Reflexes and Shield work best by adding to the already huge positional defenses.

People sometimes attempt to go for "the wrong kind of defenses" -- like aiming for positional defenses with willpower -- but it almost always works better by adding to the sorts of defense that the character already has.

I think i have it down now and so I am going to respec based on that last build above. What do you think of it?

Also, what Alpha should I go with? I seem to be very End Usage Heavy.
  • Cardiac: This helps with End Usage
  • Agility: This helps with End Recovery
  • Vigor: This focuses on End Usage too, but not as much as Cardiac

"Why am I taking so much damage? Oh, duh. <click> MUCH better!"]

The single Blessing of the Zephyr in Super Jump suggests that it used to be part of a set, but since there's just the one, it's not giving you any sort of bonuses. You could put in a generic Jump IO and save a few million INF.

Any of those will work; you could perhaps also try to slot for a little less recharge and more end reduction in a couple of attacks, like Char/Fire Blast/Fire Ball? To play on this and possibly get the OP to understand why the quoted statement rings true, or just horribly confuse everyone involved: When dealing with damage reduction (Defense OR resistance) its important to remember that the % of reduction is relative to your current damage reduction.

IE: A character with 0% resistance will take 25% less damage if they gain 25% resistance, where as a character with 50% resistance will take 50% less damage if they gain 25% resistance.

Likewise, if a mob has a 50% chance to hit a character and the character gains 5% defense, they will take 10% less damage. While if a mob has a 10% chance to hit the character and they gain 5% defense, they will take 50% less damage.

Essentially, you have to think of it based on "how much damage are you currently taking" vs "how much damage you would be taking with the increased damage reduction" - IE: Taking only 25% of incoming damage is half as much as taking 50% of incoming damage.

So when you have 0% defense, that extra ~3% from combat jumping seems pretty damn paltry. However, when a mob has an 8% chance to hit you, reducing that to 5% is an increase of 37.5% damage reduction.

MATH! Its fun for everyone!

Edit: To avoid a semantics debacle, I should say that by "Damage Reduction" I mean relative damage reduction. At 95% resistance you have 95% damage reduction, but if you currently have 90% resistance gaining another 5% will have a net effect of 50% less damage compared to where you currently take, or 50% relative damage reduction, at which point you're resistance capped and need defense to further reduce incoming damage. >.> Good job!

But if I take a slot away from Perf Shift and add it to charged Brawl to make it 6 slot Mako's, won't i lose the 3.75% on AoE? I tried the suggestion, and I got melee: 47.5%, ranged: 47.5% and aoe: 42.2%

FURTHER EDIT: Took one of the slots from Jacob's Ladder and added it to Charged Brawl, and then 6 slotted it with Mako's. Now, I am at Melee: 47.5%, Ranged: 47.5% and AoE: 45.4%. have I met the soft caps on all of them now?


Also, I am jsut 1 VR shy of getting the T4 in Barrier for Destiny. Hope I made the right choice there. And I took Cardiac for my Alpha.

There's so many builds up there, I'm not sure which one(s) we're each working with!

I was working from the last one I saw (posted 04-07-2012 05:09 PM), and with my suggested change it's at 47.5 melee, 47.5 ranged, 48.5 AoE.

Ahhh, ok I see what I did differently. I put Obliterations in Jacob's Ladder and Thunderstrike, instead of the Scirroco's Dervish enhancements. I swapped out the Oblits in Thunderstrike, and that made all the difference. Now, I have 47.5 melee, 47.5 ranged, 48.5 AoE (up from 45.4) as well.

I could still take one of the Perf Shifters out and add it to the Oblits in Jacob's Ladder to get the recharge bonus, but then my AoE would drop from 48.5 to 45.4 again. Hmmmm, not sure if it is worth it. My Haste is already above 70%.
