Seen lots of dark/dark dark/time anyone made dark/kin or dark/rad? How did they go? I'm thinking FSed shades and beast would put out some damage and darks tohit debuff would make up for kins lack of survival. Rad mainly cause i havent made one in years and pretty much overused all the other secondaries

Well, in my experience it's hard to go too far wrong with /rad paired with anything. /kin should also work nicely, although kin is a very 'busy' powerset. Kin likes to be in, or close to, melee range and there's not much in Dark that demands range so I can see some synergy there.

Dark seems to work very well in my, admittedly limited, experience. Mine just hit 31 tonight and is Dark/Time. It's not too great on damage but it has a lot of control and safety. Slot Living Shadows with procs and it suddenly becomes your best damage power... I've the Will of Controller proc, Trap of the Hunter proc, Posi Blast proc and Cloud Senses proc all in mine and it almost always has at least one proc nail most of the mobs and frequently two or three hit.

I don't have the puppy yet but the ghosts are pretty effective; like Phantom Army you'll want to get a lot of recharge so they're up as much as possible.

Dark Control seems to be a moderately low damage, fairly high control powerset. I have been having fun leveling mine up . . . but mine is Dark/Dark. (Call Me Awesome and I are actually teaming most of the time, but I'm at 33.)

The one build I would really like to make is Dark/Storm . . . except for the fact that I already have five */Storm controllers at Incarnate levels, and by playing Dark/Dark I get to try both new powersets. I think that there could be some really great synergy between the Dark Control and Storm Summoning sets.

  • Imagine stacking PB AoE Stuns with Heart of Darkness (Mag 3) and Thunderclap (Mag 2).
  • The cone AoE Immob has -knockback, so Tornado will be a great damage power.
  • You want some damage? Imagine loading up both Living Shadows (the cone AoE Immob) and Freezing Rain with 4 procs EACH. Then you get Lightning Storm to help with your pets (Haunt and Umbral Beast). Considering the substantial -Resistance in Freezing Rain, and this combo should be able to deal a substantial amount of damage. I have been impressed with Living Shadows with 4 procs, but to have Freezing Rain with the Achilles Heel, Posi Blast, Lady Gray and Impeaded Swiftness procs, too . . . wow!
  • Dark Control has ToHit Debuff, which would stack with the ToHit Debuff in Hurricane. You really wouldn't need defense, or you could focus on only Ranged Defense.
  • The Stealth from Steamy Mist will help you get in position for the various powers in Dark Control that need positioning, like the cone AoE Immob or the PB AoE Stun. Then you can bunch up the foes with powers like Hurricane and even Gale. One advantage of the stealth is that you will get less ranged attacks, so you can get by without Ranged Defense. Combine Steamy Mist with Super Speed or a Stealth IO for full invisibility.
Darn, I may have to roll one up after all . . .

I'd make a dark/storm too except I'm in the process of leveling a bots/storm

Only one? That shouldn't stop you!

Actually, Storm with a Mastermind plays a very different role than Storm as a controller secondary. While the powers are mostly the same, the way they are used is different.

I was going to ask for opinions on Dark/Storm vs [new] Grav/Storm, but I think you've answered here. :P

Dark/Storm will be awesome I'm quite sure. I've been using Waterspout from Lev Mastery, and since it's a virtual clone of Tornado (though it's got knock up instead of knock back which is a big help), I can absolutely see how having tornado AND waterspout would just be awesome. Add in Thunderstorm and you've got a lot of fire and forget damage, just keep spamming Living Shadows (which you'd be doing for dmg anyway) to avoid the knockback.

Freezing rain with it's -Def is even better than Tar patch in many ways, though IIRC the radius on Tar patch is bigger? I *would* miss Fluffy, he does a great job of keeping all the melee pets alive and healthy. The -ToHit from Hurricane would certainly work beautifully with FS. and would provide an excellent positioning tool.

I know a lot of folks love the idea of stacking the stun from Thunderclap with Heart of Darkness, but honestly I've had a lot of luck just using the -ToHit as my primary mitigation and saying to HECK with hard control, so that's really not a big deal for me.

re: Dark/Kin:

I *love* /Kin. It was the secondary on my original main Argentae (Mind/Kin) back in I-2, and I've played it with just about every controller primary. Dark/ would go a long way towards improving /Kin's squishiness, esp with problem mobs that resist particular types of control.

With FS as an alpha eliminator for large spawns as well as sufficient mitigation (esp with Possess and the ST Hold), you should be able to run into the spawn and hit FS just like Mind can with Mass Hyp, the difference being Dark/ HAS an excellent AOE immob so containment will never be a problem for you, and with a few Dmg procs in it, Living Shadows does an excellent job at taking down large spawns.

Dark/Kin would be a total blast I'm sure.

Damn.

Now I totally want to play both Dark/Storm AND Dark/Kin.

I couldn't resist. In honor of Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, the author of the most famous phrase of bad writing ever known, I wanted to see if "Dark and Stormy Night" was taken on Guardian . . . and it is one character too long. I tried to use an ampersand (&) but it would not take it. The only punctuation allowed is hyphen (-), apostrophe (') and oddly enough, question mark (?). So I came up with some variations:

Dark Stormy Night --> Taken
Dark-n-Stormy Night -->Taken
Dark andStormy Night
Dark n Stormy Night
Dark n Stormy Knight
Dark-n-Stormy Knight --> Taken
Dark n'Stormy Knight
Dark and StormyNight
Dark Stormy Knight --> Taken

I reserved "Dark n Stormy Knight" and made a level 1 character in full mideaval armor, but . . . . what do y'all think? Any other variations?

And if you have never read the entries to the "Bulwer-Litton" contests, they are hysterically funny. It is an annual competition where the worst writing wins awards.

Love it! That's a good one...

I thought of the *perfect* Dark/DAff name too... Alas, too late as I'd already created Shadow Fallen and she's up to 45 now with her backstory fully fleshed out.

Daffy Dark. Darkwing duck themed character.

Nice! I love to come up with names that fully or partially describe the powersets in a joking or unexpected way. Most of my character names are puns or jokes of some kind, with some of them kind of personally amusing even though nobody else will get it. Yours certainly fits that mold.

For example, when Time was announced, I knew I wanted to make an Ill/Time. Immediately, a line from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy came to mind which spoofs Albert Einstein's famous quote: "Time is an Illusion . . . Lunchtime doubly so." So the character became "Time is an Illusion," with the battle cry, "Lunchtime doubly so!"

I created a dark/time and it is named Ides. Guess when it was created.

I also created an earth/dark and named it Nithera.

I've made Dark Devouring the Dark/Kin (a reroll of an old Dark Blast/Kin I could never get into), Chronovore the Dark/Time, and Martial Artist the Dark/Dark (her "Dark" is brightly colored; she's supposed to have an enchanted paintbrush and is using "paint control"). The first two are still sub-20, Martial Artist is 32.
