I've been away for awhile

Apologies if this post is in the wrong section, but the title should explain it all.
I am an '05 Vet who has been away for too long (so technically I'm a newbie again) and am now just finally getting back into CoX but I find my forum profile has been restricted (can't send PMs, can't edit my signature etc.) and I unfortunately do not know whether this is down to me individually, the fact that I'm not a VIP or whether the general rules of the forum have been changed.
Could someone please explain it to me or direct me to a Moderator who can help?

Thank you in advance

Welcome back!

The best you could hope for is to PM a GM, or just use the "contact us" tab to file a report about it.

Course, the most likely thing is that you're not a VIP, as they probably don't want loads of people cluttering up the place with sigs and avatars.

Thank you very much

I use the "Contact us" tab from the Official CoX webpage, right? As I can't see one in the forum pages (things have been switched around since I was last here)

Yeah, I'd go ahead and hit that one, then. Hopefully they'll be able to tell you for sure, or you might even be able to find it on the wiki.

Thanks alot

EDIT: Found the "Contact us" link you were talking about, in small writing at the bottom of this page

RE-EDIT: I'm not sure whether it is the fact I'm not VIP, as I can't send PMs and I also just found out I can't post in ANY boards except for those that guests can post in, so as far as the forum is concerned I don't even have an account

Have you tried getting into the game again yet? I'd check with your NCSoft master account and see if you show up there as preem. Preems can go just about everywhere VIPs can right? Either way the forum thing should be resolved with the Contact Us link you found.

Yeah, I can access the game though I'm not sure about the preem thing, I'll check

I'm not sure about the signature thing, but yeah, premium accounts can only post in the All Access forums and cannot send PMs.

Sort of defeats the point of a forum if only privileged people can enjoy it

Considering only subscribers could post before Freedom, I'd say it's a step up.

How quickly we forget...

For one thing, you're complaining to the wrong crowd here. We're just fellow players; we don't make the forum rules.

For another, you can still post in some forums, and read all of them (except the beta forums). And as DarkGob points out, that's an improvement from being able to post in no forums at all without a subscription.

As DarkGob correctly pointed out, before Freedom you couldn't post at all unless you were a subscriber.

The information they gave us initially when they were discussing Freedom and the restrictions for Non-VIP's was that Non-VIP's would have NO posting priveleges on the forums, only read capability.

Several forum posters argued to get limited forum access for Non-VIP accounts and they saw that we had valid reasons for requesting that access so they looked for ways to do that.

They tested it out with the Gameplay/Technical Issue & Bugs forum section, which was one of the areas some of us were asking to be open to all. After they found out what kind of restrictions they could implement, they came up with the current plan to allow Non-VIP's to post in the four ALL ACCESS sections.

There is probably no chance that they will open it up completely for Non-VIP accounts. They would need a much larger moderation team to handle having all forum sections being open to Free and Premium players.

They have always had enough problems moderating the forums fairly and consistently as it is.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

You misunderstand me, that wasn't a complaint, it was a statement.
I am aware that Paragon and NCSoft need to make money but you have to admit it does seem a tad unfair that Vets (Or Preems, whichever is the accepted term now) get few privileges within the forums (And yes, I am aware this issue has been discussed before and that it's not Paragon's fault).

EDIT: Funnily enough that looks like a Signature below my post, yet I'm still not a VIP. Thoughts?

Your name is gold now, which AFAIK means you are VIP. Did you subscribe?

Edit: Weird, now your name is white again.

If you had a signature set from when you were a subscriber, it is possible that it will still show. I know a Premium account that had an avatar showing for a while until he removed the picture himself. Of course, all he could do was remove it, he couldn't replace it with a new avatar picture.

And as Hopeling points out, your name is now in goldenrod so that indicates you are a VIP.

EDIT: And now it's back to white. Must be some sync issues with the account servers and the forum software causing this. But it would explain the signature appearing and disappearing as well.

It's because you're not VIP.

You can post in any forum that says "All Access", but cannot post in other forums.

The devs opened up the forums in a limited fashion so new players or returning non-VIPs have a place they can ask questions about things.

Actually, vet status gets you LOTS of percs in game. Especially if you have a lot of vet status. But you're right, it doesn't seem as if vet status (Premium) gets you anything more than Freebie status in the forums. Guess some things you just have to subscribe for. Want incarnate stuff? Gotta subscribe. Want to be able to post anywhere in the forums? Gotta subscribe. Not sure on the PMing, but that may very well be a subscriber only benny, too.

Edit: Truth be told, I think I'd rather Vet status grant in-game benefits rather than in-forum benefits. Although, if it wasn't too tough to do it would be nice if Premium status granted you some middle ground forum access...

I have noticed that my name does keep changing from White->Gold->White again.
Odd.

Thank you all for the help

The reason why veteran status doesn't matter on the boards is the fact that, as far as the NCSoft system outside of City of Heroes itself is concerned, there are only Subs (VIPs) and "Free" accounts.

The distinction between "Free" and "Premium" is made only in game.

The forums have enough issues wihtout them trying to add some hack to tie into another hack they'd have to do to have the account system outside the game recognize the "Free vs. Prem" distinction.

Anyway, http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Paragon_Rewards and http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Reward_T...en_Acquisition for info on how to improve your standing in game.
