Invention. Origin. Enhancements.
Suggestion: go to a trainer and switch to your alternate build. Then level it up and buy SOs. That way you can keep your existing SO build against the day when you can use them again.
Free players get to play the game we all played in the first couple of years. IOs were a later addition. It's sort of like allowing the first version of a CD-based game to be free, while charging for the latest version.
They work if you're a high-enough time Premium player, or purchased some from the store.
Wanted: Origin centric story arcs.
If you've only played an AT once (one set combo) and "hate" it - don't give up. Roll a different combo. It may just be those sets not clicking for you.
This is not a free to play game.
This game uses a hybrid money model - it is still mostly a subscribers game with significant free play options.

You don't need IOs in order to function in a team.
"You don't lose levels. You don't have equipment to wear out, repair, or lose, or that anyone can steal from you. About the only thing lighter than debt they could do is have an NPC walk by, point and laugh before you can go to the hospital or base." -Memphis_Bill
We will honor the past, and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die...
That too. As was said, trainers can let you switch to an alt build - if unused, it will have the same xp as your first but be unleveled. used by some as a "lazy/quick" respec.

...okay, seriously what's the deal with this? I get that you need to drive players to have a reason to switch to VIP and all (not that the recent focus on VIP-only endgame updates don't give enough of an incentive) but what is with this constant beat-down on players who've previously played the game?
I get that there would be content we can't unlock. Heck, I even respect that we can't actually CRAFT the things any more without that daft license. But why, in the name of all that is holy, can't we even use the ones we've already got equipped? We need a time-limited license just to actually function in a team!?
This game pretends to be a 'free to play' model, but pinches you in all the wrong places. I'm very, very disappointed. I'll be honest, I'm testing the waters here. I could happily go VIP in the long term if the community has built up to a sufficient standard (I left because it was too darn quiet!), but this has effectively rendered all of my characters completely useless.
Maybe this was some form of last-ditch attempt to make SO's useful again, but this has to be the biggest let-down of my return so far.
