Wm/inv tank dying in lv 30ish mission

I recommended inv armor for my f2p friend's tank. He seems to be dying a lot. I feel that I may have made a mistake with my suggestion.
so far, I told him to get tough and weave. If anyone has other advice to improve survival, please let me know.

Tough and Weave will be a big help. I almost always throw Combat Jumping in as well for a little more defence and some utility. At the very least he should be using Temp Invulnerability, Unyielding, Invincibility, and Dull Pain. By 30 I usually have Tough Hide and Resist Physical Damage as well.

Hard to say too much more without knowing what his build is like, or what you were fighting, but Inv is definitely a solid set. Call_Me_Awesome has an excellent guide on building Inv tanks for the soft-cap that you should take a look at as well, which will make that tank nearly indestructible.

Need a lot more info to figure out what the problem is. Invuln is pretty damn good 'right out of the box'. Of course, it's possible to horribly gimp any powerset if you skip key powers or slot things badly enough.

I've seen invulns level 40+ get slaughtered because:
- One offered to herd high level enemies but had skipped Temporary Invulnerability, which gives most of your damage resistance.
- Another was getting held and killed by Carnies because they skipped their mez protection.

On a side note, when their mistakes were pointed out, the first tank threw a hissy fit and quit the team. The second one thanked me for the information and said they had misunderstood the power description and would take it immediately.

Could just be what he's up against as well or his difficulty settings. Running at 0/8 (generally what I run at by my 30s) or so he's going to find a few things that just aren't much fun.

Let's see my 30's see

Longbow - Wardens Egh, its like playing roulette to see what my lucky prize is, plus a lot of def debuff and some recharge debuff, think theres a res debuff in there as well

Arachnos - Quite a bit of exotic damage and a mu pack drains fairly well.

Freaks - I just returned to the game about 6 months ago, I didn't remember super stunners

Hmm hero side the new talos arcs ppd have tons of debuffs. 4 stacked flash grenades, etc

Praetoria I seem to recall having a lot of psi damage toward the end.

For every tank there is a kryptonite, it might just be learning to deal with, turning down difficulty or getting backup.

Late 30's into the 40's I seem to remember most of my tips being koa, malta or carnies. I felt like the dev's were sitting in an armchair twirling thin mustaches.

Either way, point may be that the problem isn't entirely just in his build.

It would help if you could post a build. Short of that check out Call_Me_Awesome's Invuln guides (under the Invuln section) to get some ideas. Because it's a F2P account your friend won't be able to use the IOs, but there still good info to be had.

Quite honestly, without IO's I found Invuln to be quite gimp against anything but S/L damage enemies. I abandoned my Invuln tanker after it 50, but brought it back once IO's hit.

If he has access to IO's however, I'd say its 2nd to granite in terms of survival. Since this is F2P does he indeed have access to IO's yet?

Tough and Weave, get them, slot it up, depending on the build, Maneuvers as well, that'll get you to about 30% defense to all but Psi with 1 mob in range of invinicibility. I'd like to see more, but that should be fairly decent.

Its been a while since I built with SO's in mind, but how about this, 31% defense to all but Psi, most Mace attacks, still kept unstoppable, and popped in Conserve Power, for when those blues aren't dropping and the fight is taking too long

Actually, on SOs I would call Invuln one of the stronger sets, and that's due in very large part to Invincibility. With a decent build, an Invuln tanker should be extremely difficult to kill if he's playing intelligently, with his one weakness being psy damage. There are some Tanker sets I'd be hard-pressed to stick with if I didn't have IOs (Fire comes to mind with its lack of KB protection and general squishiness out-of-the-box), but Invuln would not be high on that list.

Ironically, when you bring IOs and incarnate powers into the picture I would actually argue that Invuln is probably somewhere near the middle of the list - certainly not bad by any stretch, but its vulnerabilities are difficult to fully patch with IOs while the holes in other sets can be more readily addressed or even removed when you bring in IOs. Dark Armor, for example, becomes extremely powerful when properly outfitted with Inventions.

You most definately want Tough and Weave for your Invuln tanker and, like the others here, I'd need to see a build to see where things might be going wrong, but one thing I'd add would be to make sure that 1) Invincibility has been taken and is being run and 2) that the tanker is keeping enemies close at hand to take full advantage of the effects. Tankers normally do this anyway, of course, but with a new player it's best not to assume anything.

Thanks for the replies! I also think it's a good armor, having leveled 2 inv brutes. I gave him an example build, but it seems he ignored it. I'm not quite sure what he has actually picked, but I do know that he selected hover instead of combat jumping (which was in my sample build) so that he can get fly.
He hovers in a fight and has a tendency to just rush in. Case in point, in a cave where we approach a T intersection from the south, and 3 mobs along the corridor like so:
M1--M2--M3
....|
....|

......US

He attacks the center mob, M2 and mobs M1 and M3 come over. Him and my dom are faceplanted within seconds.

Since he's F2P, he can't use any crafted IOs, just the regular TOs, DOs and SOs. Thanks for the sample build kanga! I'll try to show it to him and if he'll give it a try, we'll do a respec trial so he can modify the build.

Well you might have a point there Justaris, I tend to forget that the set has going though a few modifications over the issues, more recently was the fact that now, invinicibility gives a larger boost from the first target in range, then it tapers off to the same level when saturated.

So now a days, Yeah I guess I could be stronger than what I remember.

I'll tell you though, i6 i7ish I was so dissapointed, but yeah now, very much a fan again

I have second F2P account, I might have to roll one up myself, see what I can get out of it

No consideration of Blindspots, no consideration of perception range, the "OMG how did that happen?" from bewildered players, followed by "we shouldn't be doing this without a proper healer", followed by rinse repeatedness, no wonder I am bored.

Sounds like a little Tanking 101 might help with some of that. You do know that the aggro cap is 17 right? That means in an ideal situation he can focus the aggro from 17 goons onto himself, the rest you get. I would like to add that there are ways to juggle/modify this by using your powers, but it's still a valid formula to use. So, be careful when facing multiple mobs, or build your toon to "kill faster" (the best damage mitigator is a mob that can't fight back (defeated)).

What server are you on? Tanker Tuesdays are a good place to get ideas and see how other players run their toons. Also lots of good advice and play strategy gets discussed (inbetween our headlong rushing into mobs ).

Also feel free to contact me if I'm on (just introduce yourself, so I know who I'm talking too ), I don't mind helping new Tankers or players that are trying to get the feel of the AT.

Oh yeah, have him join the TankHQ channel.
