The River
In a word.. meh. Pretty much a by-the-numbers shaky-cam thriller. Kinda what I expected by anyone attached to the Paranormal Activity films.
Two things really bugged me though. One was in the beginning they (sorta) establish that the son is a man of science and has no time for wonder/magic. Then before you can blink he's believing in mythical creatures and digging up corpses to appease spirits? nope.. not buying it.
The second thing was HOW many TV tropes were crammed into those 2 hours, I mean we were nearly tripping over them!
Good thing this show is only 8 episodes, it will run out of steam FAST.

The dolls were creepy....very creepy.
This show had some hits and misses. I think the second hour was a bit stronger than the first. I think the whole "Its a documentary and you are watching the footage" angle has been played to death and the shaky cam definitely got annoying. (And I'm usually pretty tolerant of them) The thing that really got me and you see this on a lot of shows that are supposed to be "documentaries" or taken from footage or have a camera crew following them around as part of the plot is the acting was pretty bad. For some reason you take a professional actor and tell them they are being shot like it was really happening and they overact. It's almost like they go from film acting to stage acting or something. The son and the mother especially.
But yeah, chock full of tropes. It was tropiciously delicious. But the run is short enough I'll probably stick with it. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Will give it a little more time.

I thought it was interesting. Sure, I knew going in it would be crammed pack of glimpses of things not meant to be seen by those in the midst of it. It's a mix of Blair Witch (shaky cam) and Paranormal Activity (fixed cam) BOO! style of scary.
Little touches like the hand coming out of the puddle for a moment, the doll tree, the possessed daughter via dragonfly reminded me of an anime series I enjoyed called Ghost Hunt.
The one thing I really didn't like was the German security guy being part of a conspiracy about "the source"? No need to mess up a series about "magic", mysticism and spirits with a conspiracy (unless it's the Thule Society and Nazis).
Since it's a short run series I'll give it a go. Not much else on Tuesday's anyways.

That reminded me.. I HOPE they aren't going to pull a trope out like a hidden Nazi South American base full of Mystical SS officers...
Also.. am I reading into it too much or did they try to "twist" the trope of the black guy getting killed first in Horror by offing the only Jewish character? (thats the only reason I can think for one of his few lines being "not many Jews out here...")

I was looking forward to this, but somehow missed the premiere.
I just caught up on Hulu, and I'm intrigued. I thought it was going to be more sci-fi than supernatural, but so far it's working. The premise would make a hell of a Beyond the Supernatural campaign.

Looking it up on TvTropes, at this time, is 30. Not bad for just the pilot, I guess.
Thank you for the time...
The show reminded me of the Blair Witch Project, I found the shaky cam to be annoying.
The show did have a creepy vibe to it (I liked it).
Once I saw the doll tree a couple of things I expected to happen, did (the head turning, eyes opening, the son taking back the teddy bear & that there would be a repercussion from that).
What did you all think of the show?
