Fringe 1/20

Interesting, they are playing with some fascinating changes to the backstory with Peter removed from the timeline from the point when the lake broke until the bridgeheads where established. And they aren't hitting us over the head with it. I would go back and have rewatch the episodes with our new enemy to see how Peter interacted in that but clearly without Peter World 1 never detected the Dr.'s Actions as a Fringe event. And of course without Peter the Dr. survived his jaunt.

The other interesting bit is who is working with the Dr. I can't say that I'm that surprised as I haven't exactly trusted that character since first seen and I have a feeling that certain restraining persons didn't have the same influence this time around. Though it does explain the Watchers reference to Olivia needing to die. Though does she need to stay dead?

This really is an underrated show. I love how it dramatically changes every season.

Agreed. Hopefully they will be able to bring an ending this season, as I seriously doubt that it will be renewed. That, or another network gives it a second chance.

I find your lack of signature disturbing.

Well, Currently I'm sharing Peter's opinion that he's not in his universes. Too many things changed, and not enough did if that makes sense. Because of this, it's important to keep in mind that while there are a lot of similarities the people are not the same as the ones from the original universes. Examples are Walternate and Nina Sharp.

I do have to agree that the show is great. It's one of my favorite shows and every time I hear that it might get canceled I cringe a bit.

Here's where I'm confused...

Are there are now three universes in play? Or four? Or still only two.

Universe 1 is the one we'd been watching since the first episode of season 1.

Universe 2 is the Walternate universe we were introduced to at the end of season 1.

At the end of season 3 Peter disappeared from Universe 1 after climbing into the machine.

In season 4, Peter reappears in what we assume is Universe 1, but as time passes, he seems to feel he is in Universe 3 and needs help to return to Universe 1. So is he just confused/delusional, or is this really a third Universe and somewhere Walter, Olivia, et. al. are standing around looking at a Peter-less machine scratching their heads?

And is the Universe 2 of season four the same Universe 2 of seasons 2 and 3, or is it now Universe 4?

Also, what the heck was up with Peter's jaunt into the future at the end of last season? Was that addressed at any point and I'm just drawing a blank on it, or have they pretty much ignored that?

Those are the questions aren't they? Sooo frustrating yet so satisfying that a show will "go there".

I'm not so sure that Peter is in the wrong place, it's just been "rewritten" as a place without him. More universe 1a and Walternate world is now 2a. I think after the comments from the Observer to Olivia that in order to correct the worlds she will have to do something (with her now unknown powers) which obviously means her unfortunate end in order to restore the universe(s). Kind of a Gift of the Magi feel. In order for Peter to get back to the world and people he loves the person he truely loves "can't" exist anymore. Which will set off yet another chain of events in the future for them to find each other.

I'm not 100% sold that he isn't in the right place, then again I'm not 100% sold the other way either. That's the beauty of this show.

Peter, the living adult Peter, disappeared from both universes when he was connected to the machine. It's just that since he was missing from Walternate universe anyways there wasn't as much change there.

As for what seems to be a face heel turn in Nina Sharp don't forget that Bell was the advocate for developing a fighting force against the other universe and Olivia was the most promising candidate. Without Peter, the favor for saving Peter, etc. the ZFT group wasn't thwarted as often if at all. And it kind of makes sense if they got funding via Massive Dynamics covertly, since both are working to defeat their alternate universe.

Seconded. I haven't been able to keep up with this season as it's (obviously) not out on dvd yet, but the few I've seen are keeping me watching it. I'm not even all that enamored of the characters (Walter aside), but I really like how they're handling all the repercussions of the story ideas. If it weren't for this show and Dr. Who, I wouldn't be watching any tv at all*... which probably means it's doomed.
