Data Usage

Perhaps this has been answered but I was unable to find it in a search. Has anyone ever done any data mining into how much data is used when playing CoH?

My basic question is, I will be away from my regular internet connection and have a 4G wifi connection for a week or so. I have limited data on that connection. For around 3 gigs, how much play time is viable? So much that I shouldn't care? 2 iTrials and I'm done? I have no idea what to expect.

Does anyone have any kind of personal experience with this?

Does anyone know how play style affects data transfer? I presume an iTrial full of people and events results in a higher data transfer per minute than say a solo mission with all your global channels shut down, but how much more?

If anyone has ever looked into this or has personal experience with it, I would be interested in hearing what you have found.

TIA

I'm not sure of the exact amount of bandwidth that typically gets used to run this game. But I seem to recall a recent thread that mentioned there were options that would allow you to cut off some of the data-mining type info that gets passed back to the servers. Maybe somebody knows more about that because that sounds like you could use that to minimize your traffic and maximize your time playing.

Good luck regardless.

Looking at my Kaspersky network log, it looks like I'm using 200-300 megs/week. That's playing 2-4 hours/day on the average.

Thank you very much. That is the exact type of information I was hoping someone had.

disable the sending buffs option. not exactly sure how to do it. this is a huge constant data traffic between your comp and the host, and is suggested as a ghetto fix for lag in trials.

(I'm going to assume you're in the US btw)

I'm not sure if other ISPs do this, but Optimum Online offers free Wifi for their customers.

I tend to use it for my iPod Touch when I'm at work since we don't have wireless here.

There are also places like Starbucks and McDonalds that offer free Wifi to their customers as well.

Just something to check/keep in mind

As far as the volume of data, you'll be fine.
HOWEVER, some carriers have restrictions in addition to the data limit. There are a few that explicitly prohibit online gaming over the connection. I would suggest reviewing your terms of service.

If you use windows, grab Networx for free (no adware). It can log your data useage and give you exact numbers/session. You can keep reports for a month and see if you are getting close to your 3GB after a week and if you will need to adjust your playing time.

For a while, I was on a crappy 5 GB/month plan, that counted uploads and downloads as that limit. I found I was using 200-300 MB/session of approx four hours. See if your plan counts uploading as well.

itrials, mothership raids and teaming uses more bandwidth - more data back and forth.

You can turn off sending buffs/receiving buff info and numbers in options. I suggest you do so.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):
