New blaster
What AT is your wife playing?
I can not say from experience, but NRG secondary seems to have a bit more melee in it than most sets. I would tend to lean against it for that reason unless you plan to blap.
Under construction
By 'soft-cap', I assume you mean s/l? In which case most blasters can achieve that by taking scorpion armor from mace mastery or cold armor (along with cj/hover, weave, and a light sprinkling of set bonuses).
I haven't played it, but rad/nrg sounds fun; good blaps and stacking stuns for mitigation. It'll especially shine in a small group setting.
Rad is a good blast set, especially if you like to get up close and personal. Other good pairings include darkness mastery (good blaps and zomg soul drain) and mental (another pbaoe, a cone if you want it, and drain psyche. A good choice if you like to fight larger groups, DP can provide upwards of 100 hp/s regen; combined with capped s/l makes for a pretty sturdy blaster- I'm a bit biased here, a rad/mm is one of my personal faves).
Sonic/Ice is a LOT of fun. Solo it is just crazy and in a team you debuff everything and pour on the damage.
Yes, I meant S/L def. And Rad/NRG, fits the concept behind the toon better, as does blapping.
As far as what my wife intends to play, she hasn't decided yet. Once I get out of these briefings that I have all day ( Death by Poewr point, YAAAAYY!!!!) I will try to put something together in Mids.
Are there any guides with recommendations as to what powers to pick for rad?
Willpower has more passive regen than Regen does. Who thought that was a good idea?
Can we get a fix for Energy Melee instead of more new sets?
If you really want a PBAoE, blapping, monster of a blaster, I'd recommend Rad/Fire/Mace (or Ice Epic). Easy to soft cap to S/L and the AoE damage output is simply incredible.
With a Rad/Nrg you'll have lots of stacking stuns but your AoE will be kind of clunky as you'll have a PBAoE, short range cone with low % chance of KB, and a TAoE.

I understand that EM isnt really great for AoE. Hell that's one of the reasons that it's such a lackluster set for melee toons.
No, I don't want fire, just rad/nrg.

If you are going to be mainly S/L soft capped blapping I'd skip Electron Haze, Proton Volley, and Atomic Blast. The other powers you'll want.
The sample build below is slightly over the softcap to S/L with Stealth on and suppressed. It also has energy defense at 43.4%. If you have and want to use a Glad armor +3% defense IO you can soft cap all 3 positions.

Thanks Miladys Knight. Unfortunately I wont have time to look at the build in great detail or even play until Sunday. I do appreciate the build though. Hopefully it will give me some good ideas.

You're welcome.

I went with a Range Cap Hover Blaster build for you, just to give you an idea in either direction. The last power is your choice. You could go Scorpion shield and then eat 2 purples and fight in melee range. Or go with a resistance shield.

I'm mostly a melee guy, but am thinking about rolling up a blaster t duo with my wife. Personally I am thinking of Rad/Nrg.
I don't really see many blasters around, and rarely any rad ones.
How is this combo? Is it possible to soft cap, or at least get within a purple Skittle of it?
Willpower has more passive regen than Regen does. Who thought that was a good idea?
Can we get a fix for Energy Melee instead of more new sets?
