Mastermind Bodyguard Question

As I understand it, bodyguard mode is active while my pets are set to defensive and follow. If something attacks me and the pets start attacking, does the bodyguard damage splitting still occur? The pet window still displays my pets being in defensive and follow mode, was just wondering if that was in fact indicative of whether bodyguard was on.

Yes, they can attack things and stay in bodyguard, as long as they react on their own instead of you giving an attack order.

What Hopeling said and IIRC as it's been a while since I played a MM, the pets still need to be in a close range to the MM. So if your minions run up to melee, while you and the rest of your pets stay at range, the damage will be split across the pets still near you, and the minions would not take damage from Bodyguard.

Almost: the pets just require defensive, not follow. Also they need to be "close" to you--actually they need to be in Supremacy range, which is 80 feet. That's quite a ways, but Supremacy is also blocked by Line of Sight, so small objects around you can take one or more pets out of bodyguard mode quite easily.

Hint: Flight and Hover are your friends. Get a bit above the battlefield, and there are fewer objects to break Line of Sight.

Also you can watch the icons on your pets, if you have them enabled. Supremacy is visible, and you can also see Tactics, Maneuvers, etc. If your pets don't have other AoE buffs on them, they don't have Supremacy.

Lastly, use the Combat window if you are unsure. Bodyguard mode is visible there. It will tell you how much damage your pets are absorbing.

Specifically, Defensive and either Follow, Stay, or Go To - I think the in-game documentation calls out Follow only, but the intent is you can not be ordering your pets to attack and they must be in defensive mode.

Correct; Defensive/Stay works fine for Bodyguard, which is handy for things like pulling AVs to a killing spot, keeping them at range, keeping them in melee, etc. Note that pets in Defensive/Stay will ignore the "stay" part and run out to shoot anything that shoots at you, though.

One other thing which can be annoying or handy, depending on how you use it, after you issue a "defend" command, there is a several second pause before the pets will start shooting stuff. They don't wait like this if they are already in Defend mode and you run in to a spawn, its just a pause after you issue the command. This prevents superfast toggling between Attack and Defend modes.

Also it hasn't been said before. You lose Supremacy if you go invisible. If you just stealth it is fine but if they can't see you, aka invisible, they lose it too. With with the stealth IOs becareful not to just put it in something like Super Speed cause if you ever activate it you loose Supremacy that is why I put my stealth IO in something like Sprint.

It is also helpful to edit your attack macro and take out aggressive and make sure follow macro has defensive in it. That way you don't go into aggressive, for the most part you really don't need to be in it.

I use Follow for this. Follow has a gap of about 10 seconds or so before pets revert to "normal" behavior. Your pets will *just* follow you, and not do anything else. However, if you use Defensive *and* Follow, you'll get both: bodyguard mode *and* pets that follow you around and ignore attacks by enemies.

Then just make a key-bind and spam it while pulling. Works super excellent, I use it all the time.

Nope, you're using Defensive Follow, not just Defensive. Edit the macro you're using (you can even edit the ones that the game gives you to start) and remove the Follow command. See if that changes the behavior (it will).

It's Follow that gives that pause, not Defensive. You can switch pets to Defensive right in the middle of a fight and gain bodyguard mode immediately and your pets will NOT pause, as long as you don't also issue a Follow command.

I think you are confusing things.

If being "invisible" was supposed to make Supremacy turn off, any amount of stealth would. Stealth is simply a value.

However, the Concealment power [Invisibility] contains the line "OnlyAffectsSelf" - that cancels Supremacy.

No I mean when you are considered invisible. aka stealth rating is high enough. aka stealth+super speed or grant inviz on you. yes OnlyAffectsSelf does cancel Supremacy. But if your pets can't see you as far as the game is concerned you loose it too. This was like it back in the day. Unless something has changed it still is the same. Right now I don't have access to a computer with CoH on it so I can't test it out again.
At least I was noticing this a very long time ago. I just haven't tested it out for very long.

Line of sight has never canceled BG mode for me on any of my Masterminds. I just tested this to be sure and sure enough my pets were taking their share of damage from around a corner as I was being bombarded my Malta. I used to use this to my advantage to protect my pets from damage when AoEs are hitting my MM.

I think the BG mode mechanic has the same radius as Supremacy, but it is not directly tied to supremacy it self.
