Best Taunt aura?

Perhaps it is my choice of secondary (Titan Weapon), or because of my low lvl (15), or even perhaps I blow as a tank, but I find I am having a hard time keeping mobs interested in me on my WP/TW tanker.

I just ran a DFB, and I had to do my damnedest to keep pulling mobs back to me. I understand that my real job is to hold the majority of mobs, to allow my party to deal with a smaller group, but I found the brutes and scrappers continuously pulling mobs I was focusing on, away from me.

DFB is fairly forgiving for any class to deal with the mobs, but if I am having problems holding agro this early, I don't want to possibly put a party of serious players through my apparent horror of tanking.

Is TW too slow (at least to start) to be an effective tanking choice? Should I switch to a primary with a damaging taunt aura? Does a damaging taunt aura even work better than a debuffing one?

I am sure I will get the usual, "there is no best", but what are the top taunt auras? I'd love to keep titan weapon, but if it is not viable, there is no point in continuing using it.

Without listing the auras as you requested I'd suggest you try an Elec/Titan, I just got one to 50 earlier today and the aura among other things is effective.

IIRC, Ice has the best taunt aura with [Chilling Embrace]. It also has [Icicles] for a second taunt aura. Something with how frequent CI ticks. Next up is Dark Armor. Again, its mainly because it has 3 taunt auras. Next on the list is prolly SD and then Invuln, though I believe those two are almost identical. Then... we get to the worst taunt aura, which is Will Power's Rise to the Challenge.

These are just what I have witnessed and heard about as well as a little gut feeling. None of this is scientific. (besides the WP taunt aura.. that is by far the worst.)

Auto Hit taunt aura's seem to do better simply because they are auto hit. The damage auras are nifty.. however they need to hit

You are talking about DFB (death from below). Again this is from recollection only, but I believe Gauntlet doesn't kick in till level 10. Don't worry about having a hard time holding aggro in DFB... even if you do get all the agro, chances are... at level 10, you will die.

Don't worry 'bout it.

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

WP is known for having a weaker taunt aura than other sets. This is especially true at very low levels (such as in DfB), when your Gauntlet taunt duration is very short.

Autohit/debuff auras like CE are better as I believe debuffs generate more threat than damage. CE also has multiple debuffs (-move, -rech, -dmg).

Against All Odds is also a good aura for the same reasons as CE, and it is the only aura I've ever had to fight for aggro with on my Icer.

Tankers don't get Energy Aura, but Entropic Aura now seems to be a decent aggro aura. My New TW/EA Brute has been the one stealing aggro from other Brutes and Tanks on various TFs.

Willpower's RttC "should" be a good aura, but IIRC, it's taunt durations and rate of ticks are smaller that CE or AAO. Slotting some Taunt duration IOs in it should help out, if you choose to stick with WP.

SG: Guadians of Paragon - VG: Paragon's Darkness
The Usual Suspects: Fimboolvetr (Icer Tank), Tsukiyomi (Mind/Psi/Ice Dom), Smiting Dragon (Dm/Sr Scrap), Widow Mortis (NW)
Up and Comers: Ameterasu (Km/Reg Scrap), Arrhymian (Elec/Nin Stalk), TDMKII (Bot/Traps MM)

In my experience the absolute best aggro machine is Ice Armor thanks to it's 0.5 second tic rate 14 second duration auto hit aura backed up by it's damage aura. It instantly grabs aggro and holds it with vice grips.

Second place is probably Shield thanks to the debuff in it's 1 second tic, 17 second duration autohit aura. Invuln is tied or slightly behind as it lacks a debuff effect but has the same numbers. Bear in mind that Invuln doesn't get it's aura, Invincibility, until level 18 while everyone else gets it by level 8.

After those three you have most of the other sets; those with damage auras all have accuracy checks so they're a bit more iffy to establish aggro quickly and Stone's Mud Pots, while it DOES have an autohit component, also has a slow 2 second tic rate so it can take more time to gather aggro. Once they get aggro those with multiple auras do tend to hold it well.

Ever since Willpower was introduced it's had a, frankly, broken taunt aura. It has a 1 second tic rate and a 1.25 second duration... anything not actually in your aura will loose interest in you immediately. On the other hand WP is no longer the absolute worst since Super Reflexes is (hopefully, as the Brute version is good) bugged with a 0.5 second tic, 1 second duration aura. Neither of these tankers will be able to hold aggro without working very hard and leaning on a strong AOE focused secondary.

Frankly I think you're going to be disappointed in WP as an aggro tanker... I would suggest a re-roll as an Invuln... it's the most durable of the top three aggro tankers, followed by Shield and then Ice.

Do not feel bad, you're not the only one. I experienced the exact same thing with my Stone/TW Tanker. However, after some discussion with other Tankers here and on Freedom, I loaded up with 'Perfect Zinger' in 2 of my attacks (Titan Sweep & Follow Up, including Taunt.) It improved my performance for aggro management. However, if on a team with a brute or scrapper using TW, I still have a problem keeping them on me if the other ATs are close by. This might change when I can finally done 'Granit Armor.' At least I am hoping so. Slot taunt enhancements in a few of your attack powers and see if that does not help you. It did for me.

Current active characters: Dragon Maiden (50+3 Brute SS/WP/PM), Black Widow Maiden (50+1 Night Widow), Catayclasmic Ariel (50 lvl Defender - Kin/DP), Quantumshock (50 lvl Elect/Energy/Energy), American's Defender (38 lvl Tanker - SD/Mace), Spider-Maiden (15 lvl Corruptor - RB/PD) & Siren Shrike (15 lvl Defender - Sonic/Sonic). My entire stable.

No one steals aggro from my Ice/TW tank nor my Dark/KM tank, but my WP/Mace tank loses it like a sieve. Reroll Ice and no one will take your aggro and you'll get a nice +end tool at lvl 26 and since it's TW you'll have massive swinging weapons to entertain you while next to nothing touches you since you're just shy of softcap on SOs. You also get a heal and +hp so what's not to love

Everyone forgets about the FA aura which gets lots of aggro, but also if u put a taunt proc in your RTC u should hold aggro more. I have no problem on my WP/SS tank that steals aggro from other tanks with it even from ice tanks. I have to remember to turn it off when im tanking HAMI or else i will steal aggro from the yellow mito from the other tank.

On my WP tanker, I'm getting Darkest Night from Soul Mastery to help out with the aggro(and survivability).

For regular mobs, if I fire off my TAoE in Dark Obliteration, then apply Darkest Night on a hard target, I'm pretty much set for aggro, as Gauntlet and TW's great AoE will help with the rest. And for AV fights, I don't mind firing off Taunt in case that Darkest Night+RttC+Gauntlet is not enough.

I place another vote for Ice Armor.

Took me a while to realize RTC stood for Rise to the Challenge (usually abbreviated RttC). Thought you meant something with Fire Aura. Also... what taunt proc... have I missed something. I did not know there was a taunt proc.

Except you cannot slot Taunt Set IOs into your Auras anymore.

Be Well!
