Defense Question (Positional vs Delivery tags)

Recently I got Farsight on my /time MM and i absolutely love it, especially coupled with Time's Juncture.

But now I've got a question about how defense works regarding to Positional and Delivery tags, according to wikia almost every attack has a Positional and one or multiple delivery tags.
How does this work with defense.

Say, someone attacks me with brawl, an attack with a melee positional tag and a smashing delivery tag. Say I've got 15% melee and 15% smashing def.
How does that add up in the DefMods section of the master hit chance formula? (HitChance = Clamp( AccMods × Clamp( BaseHitChance + ToHitMods – DefMods ) ) )

Do i get the highest (which would be 15% in this case), or do i get some kind of addition (so around the 30%)

And if it's only 1 of 2, on which should i focus, positional or delivery defense?

You get the highest applicable defense value. Only "base defense" adds to any other form of defense, and then it just totals for that positional vector or typed defense. Very few things actually raise base defense but there are a few powers out there.

As for which one to focus on... usually, whichever one is the easiest to increase or the one that will protect you the most (they're not always the same - for instance, most attacks in the game have either a smashing or lethal component and so that one is really valuable, but Fire/Cold defense is pretty easy to get in abundance).

Yes, you only apply the highest applicable defense. If you have 25% AoE defense, and 10% fire defense, and get hit with a Fireball, it will use your AoE defense and ignore your fire defense.

Which one you should focus on depends on the build, but basically you want to focus on the kind of defense you already have from your powers, if any. So Shield Defense would want positional defense set bonuses, but Invulnerability would want typed bonuses. If you're trying to build up some defense on a build that starts with none, you can just choose the most appropriate type. A hover-blaster might go for ranged defense, since he's out of melee range (and AoE attacks are less common and less dangerous), for example.

Tangent here, but it's not a good idea to use the wikia; it's not maintained and can infect your system with malware. Use the Paragon Wiki instead: paragonwiki.com or wiki.cohtitan.com (both addresses are the same site).

Also note that damage types are not related to attack types - Fireball is an AOE/Fire attack for attack types - ignoring the fact that it deals some smashing damage.

Similarly, Levitate is a ranged attack that deals smashing damage, but checks only against psionic defense.
