Praetorian counterpart to a toon I just rolled up

I just made a Broadsword/shield defense scrapper as a Villan and I was thinking of giving him a praetorian counterpart who will go heroside so I could do undercover loyalist arcs. I've narrowed the secondary down to Shield defense or Invulnerability and the primary to Dark Melee, War Mace, Or Battle axe. Did some research and I've heard that Dark Melee really goes good with Shield defense, I also know I'll probably get a play what you like but I figured I'd ask and see if there's any really powerful combos here. I might consider Energy Aura as I've never played that before either.

Toon will be in praetoria so mostly soloing as it seems really hard to get a team there and lately I've been using Generic IO's to get me through to the upper levels. all feed back and suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Any reason per sé to make the Praetorian another melee character? My n/n Blaster's Evil Twin (complete with a Beard Of Evil ) is a demon/therm Mastermind.

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

Only particular reason is that's what Im used to playing, I have a demon/dark and bots/traps so I dont think I'd wanna do Demons or bots again and I dont like necro, tried them 3 or 4 times and get frustrated, any mastermind suggestions?

For going melee, I'd suggest Dark/Invulnerability. That will play differently from a Broadsword/Shield and has some nice synergy.

Heh, well... one of my suggestions IS necro, but it really depends on the backset and understanding the necessary playstyle. With (for example) Dark Miasma, you have to follow your pets into melee to keep them healthy. The ones that stay at range can generally fend for themselves. I also spam the heck out of attack commands on one target at a time, to keep them on task. Yes, zombies r dum.

Ninja are even "worse", being even more melee-centric. Again, a point-blank support set helps immensely.

A lot of people will recommend Thugs/Dark. I'm one of them. With the tier 2 pets' +def, plus Leadership, plus any other backset that provides more of the same... win. Dark has that, plus -to hit, plus the AoE heal. Win squared.

A lot of people will steer you away from Mercs. Again, I'm one of them. They're a one-trick (Lethal damage) pony, for the most part. Against Lethal-resistant enemies (of which there are many), they can be very frustrating. That being said, my wife plays a Mercs/TA MM that is every bit the walking engine of destruction that most MMs aspire to be. The character should have been named "De-Buff Hell."

With regard to melee, I like Brutes, but my experience with them, or any other melee AT, is pretty narrow. I do have an nrg/nrg Brute, but I haven't played him extensively since the changes to Energy Aura, so I can't competently say how it plays, now.

As a side note, I wasn't trying to specifically recommend Masterminds per sé. Only using him as an example of a Praetorian "evil twin" because he's the only one I have.

Im gonna bump this thread and ask if theres any specific Archetypes that work well in Praetoria, I rolled up a claws/elec brute because I heard /elec works really well, is there by chance another powerset that would work? Im not a big fan of brutes (i prefer scrappers) So I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions? I have a thugs/pain and bots/traps Im almost done with but I wanna do the undercover as resistance arcs with a new toon.

Well, let's see, went BS/Shield as the Scrapper. That just seems to give off a more low tech style, possibly magic, maybe natural in orgin.

So if I was to make a few suggestions...

Praetoria is less about magic, at least in Praetoria proper (ie not First Ward). So why not go a more tech route?

Dual Pistols/Trap Corr

Or Titan Weapons/WP, where WP is their tech armor or even ELA!

I like the idea of Dp/traps or TW/Wp, I might try both.. gotta couple different story lines I need to finish in praetoria anyway, thanks
