Not a great year for genre movies or TV. Nice to see Game of Thrones and Peter Dinklage get their just due. And even though I'm not caught up on the show it was nice to see American Horror Story with a few nods.

For those who care about this stuff (yes I know how some of you feel about awards season), I think it was a pretty weak year at the theater and the real magic was on the small screen.

I think the best competition this year is in the TV drama and lead actor in a TV drama. Boardwalk Empire's second season was the tension filled mob story we all wanted to see in season one (which was really all set up). This season was fantastic, and maybe IMHO the best show on television. That said, while I haven't watched this season yet, I've heard great things about this years Breaking Bad. Homeland is a strong contender with a timely storyline and fantastic acting from Daines, Lewis and the always great Mandy Patinkin. Also strong is Boss from Starz (of all networks). Forget all the real life drama and his past as a great comedic actor, Kelsey Grammar is unbelievably good and evil and heartbreaking in Boss. (All at the same time!) Honestly I could see any of the best actor nominees win that category (except maybe Irons). They were all that great. And for people who are fans of the Wire I really think that both Homeland and Boss carried some of the "feel" of the Wire in their own ways. If you haven't seen either of them, check them out sometime. Warning!!! Boss is a talky grownup type story, not much in the way of sfx. But it's great. My heart though belongs to Game of Thrones as I'm fully invested in ASOIAF, but I wouldn't be upset at all to see Boardwalk, Homeland or Boss take the prize.

And yay for no Mad Men in Drama. I like talky grownup drama but I've never gotten the appeal of this show. Yawn. Overrated.

Weak is a nice way of describing this year at the movies. Even though there are a lot of good ones with excellent performances among these nominees, it's rather obvious that their release dates tend to be clustered around the current 'award season', as though entrenching after a retreat from the dreck earlier this year.

(As for TV, the real magic is specifically on cable, not broadcast.)

Oh well, at least the Razzies are going to have a surfeit of nominees this year.

I love the fact I have either never heard of these movies/shows and/or don't watch them. Only a few are shows I want to watch and just haven't gotten around to it... Like Big Bang Theory that I haven't seen past season 1.

I always liked the fact that a good number of films have only been limited release so they could qualify and that a good number of the TV shows aren't on the broadcast networks but are on pay channels.

Tattoo isn't out until next Wednesday, Warhorse even later and I don't see Iron Lady scheduled for this year (but I'm sure it'll be in released in the requisite number of cities before New Year to qualify for the Oscars).

I'm vaguely familiar with the Razzies, but when I went to their site just now I can't believe they feel they have the right to call out the worst movies of the year with headlines like "Alvin and the blow-chunks".

Well, they also refer to Michael Bay's Razzie-winning Transformers movies as "Trannies", so you can't say they don't go the extra distance to lower themselves to, or past, the level of their material.
