Prem and f2P tags in character info screen
I agree. It happened for me too, that I did some team with new players, and I started to tell them about my supergroup. They didn't knew what a supergroup was, and was interesting to check it out. The I disappointed them when I had to say "sorry, you must be VIP or Premium to join".
Another idea I had was to allow F2P players to join (not lead) a supergroup, but instead put a level cap at 35 or something. This is analogous to how some social network sites work: everyone has access to social features (which supergroups are), but not all powers. I am however certain that the developers considered that option, and made it like it is for a good reason.

I just wish I could take my premium friends through, say, First Ward missions without having to go 'oh, sorry. You can't play with me today unless you spend money first.'

We had a trial that was hang up for a while because a non-VIP joined the league then wouldn't speak up or quit the league. We eventually had to kick anyone that didn't have a level shift to figure out who it was.
Put a tag on the character info screen that indicates what the status of the person your looking at is. IE if I look at super x's info, I can easily see if they can join a SG or not.
Jay Doherty: Yes, there was this one night that I was ready to go home but had to drop the browns off at the super bowl before I left for home. While on the throne it hit me. I stayed for a few more hours and that why we have the pain pads in the game.
