Night Hornet Comic and Art all in one place

I was thinking that perhaps instead of clogging up the section with various posts I should perhaps put all my stuff in one thread as others have done. Apologies if this is a long post.

Firstly I don't really consider myself an artist, initially I created the images for my comic as I grew tired of the limitations of screenshots and I wanted the characters to be able to show a range of emotions.

However I slowly began to be seduced by the idea of attempting to make the images more erm arty mostly to promote the comic. Basically I'm still learning.

Typically I don't like usual superhero poses and tend to prefer doing more off-beat pieces.

In anwswer to a few PM's I've had recently, the images are created by rendering the figures in either Poser or Daz then using a graphics tablet and PS to 'paint' over.

Here's a few samples:

Anyway on to the comic, which features the same art, some of you might of seen it kindly posted by Avatea in the city of comic creators thread (my thanks to Avatea for her great support and kind words).

If you like to typical comic slugfest then I'm afraid my comic won't appeal but if you are interested in character development, suspense, offbeat humour and the 'fourth wall' it might interest you.

The link to the whole series is in my sig. But if 23 issues are a bit of an undertaking (yes it would be ). I'd suggest picking it up from issue 18, I've linked these issues below:

Anyway thanks for looking and I'll use this thread in future instead of multiple posts. I'm currently completing up my latest issue which will have some costume codes hidden within it.

I'd disagree NH. After we chatted i actually decided to look into 3d rendering as i had no clue what it was all about. Managed to find a free dl of Daz Studio 4 and some free content packs and set to work. Now, i do consider myself an artist, but i tell you mate, i can't produce anything like the standard of these pieces you're creating, as i said on your DA page, the Night Hornet one (also posted at the top of your collection here) is outstanding! The scene tells a story, there's atmosphere, it's brilliantly designed and rendered, it's art buddy Keep it up i say, both the art pieces and the comic are brilliant imo

I agree with Henri--this is great, original artwork! The programs you used are tools to help you achieve the final product. I'm not sure what you mean by using graphic tablet & PS to "paint" over, but whatever it is you're doing, keep it up!

As a sidenote, I'm a huge fan of wings, and I like the way you've rendered them. Very ethereal.

I love the lighting in "A Memory," there's a sense of mystery and bittersweetness tied in with this scene.

I think what he means is if you handed him a pencil and set of
paintbrushes (or say a wacom tablet +photoshop) and asked him to create an image like this...

that he couldn't.

@Sakiya: By "paint over" I'm guessing he means that he's using the premade characters, items and lighting effects,
that come with the 3D programs and then making adjustments to make them look more like they fit the City of Heroes theme.

It does take creativity and skill, and there is certainly an art form to arranging a compelling scene by setting the character positions,
lighting and tone of a piece to tell a particular story, it just falls more under the umbrella of content manipulation than content creation.

I think there will always be room for discussion as to what constitutes 'art'.

The more i explore 3d art, i'm finding it's probably more comparable to photographic art than traditional art. Setting the scene, correct lighting, model choice, etc, are all essential to creating a good finished piece, as Chris mentioned. And although a photographic artist does not personally 'create' the content in his pictures, in my opinion photography is certainly art.

The same could be said for such contemporary artists as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and others who have created some of their most famous pieces from everyday pre-made objects, none of which they personally produced themselves. The art is in creating the scene.

Art appreciation will, and should, always be ruled by opinion, we're all different and we all appreciate different things. I have very few pieces of art in my own house due to the fact that my wife (who incidently is a skilled photographer) and i, although sharing the same opinion on most things in life and both being big fans of art, have such differing tastes in art that we hardly ever both like a piece enough to own it.

Be interesting to maybe start a new thread (so as not to derail from Night Hornets own artz in this thread) to discuss our tastes and opinions on different types of art as most that frequent here are interested in art at some level.

Not if you value your life, time, and/or sanity.

Better off to just go with it.

Nice work any way you look at it NH.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

With the right group it could be a fun/interesting topic for conversation/debate... or it could become a flamewar lol.

Either way I agree Night's thread is not the place for it so I'll just say
there are some nice compositions and paint-overs here.
Cheers!

The debate of what is and is not art will go on forever. *shrug* Is it art just because a pencil was used? Or is it more about the intent behind the creation? If someone using Poser or whatever program isn't an artist because they are just manipulating content, does that mean that a movie director cannot be considered an artist as that is all they do?

All in all, I think you will find as many definitions and places to draw the line (ha!) as there are people... And even for those people, the definitions will likely blur and change with time, depending on instance, and the like.

All in all, for me it boils down to this being some cool stuff to look at... And I could care less about definitions and labels.

Thank you The video was put together in Adobe Premier which took about an hour, but each image in the video took at least an hour to create.

I didn't realise that my thread would create a debate like this, here's my two cents:

As I said at the start of the thread, really I use this method of image creation primarily for my comic. In answer to an earlier point - I can draw by hand but I can't produce this quality.

Creation of these images ultilises more skills than many might realise, including texturing, some model making and digital painting (which gives them a more erm painted look).

Is it art? Well I have been l lucky enough to have a few commissions and not all COH related (in fact I was very pleased to be commissioned to do a CD cover for an up and coming band). The important thing for me was that all of people I did the commissions for were delighted with the results - does that make art....who knows?? Does it matter??

This art is just amazing and the best I've seen around ! Consider me a huge fan !
I wish I could draw/create something even remotely close to this, there is no doubt you have a real talent for this.
If you are not doing this as your profession yet you should really consider making the move. :-)

My thanks for such high praise, although I'm not sure I'm deserving
