Sometimes, I impress my boss. Sometimes, I impress myself. The rest of the time, I scare people. I can live with that.
There are three basic types of people in the world.
Those that can. Those that do. And those that can do. This Friday, the 11th of November, we are reminded of the people that said "can do". They are your grandfather. They are you mother. They are your brother/sister/cousin/aunt/uncle. They, are the ones that said "I can do"., They stepped up, and joined something to protect you, your family, their family, themselves. This Friday, the 11th of November 2011, remember that someone, somewhere, some-how...decided that your life is worth more than than theirs and the only way they could be equaled.... Was to be more than themselves. |
"Goodbye, Jean-Luc. I'm gonna miss you... you had such potential. But then again, all good things must come to an end..." -- Q
Got my poppy this morning.
Stayed with the vets, talking with them a bit at the subway terminal I go through everyday.
Would have been just a great little conversation if some saggypants wearing idiot hadn't screamed out "F* war and F* soldiers". I only had time to encourage him to shut his spoiled cake hole and learn some history, and that honoring the sacrifice of others didn't mean being a warmonger.
Wound up apologizing to the vets for this guy's idiocy and left, embarrassed to have seen this happen.
I salute you, veterans.

If there is one thing I am grateful for, it is the fact that there are many veterans that I am acquainted with. My Great-Uncle, for example, served in Italy during WWII and was MIA for a few days, he died late last year. My Great-grandfather served in the WWI as a cook, and we have reason to believe that he was present at Vimy Ridge. There are many more who I have come to know through the church. One in particular stands out in my memory; served as a pilot in WWII and Korea, and then spent nearly 50 years serving as a missionary to Japan.
Is it any wonder that I look forward to any opportunity to speak to these guys?

As I'm a fan of quotes, here are some inspiring ones;
This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave. ~Elmer Davis
Do you know what a soldier is, young man? He's the chap who makes it possible for civilised folk to despise war.
Allan Massie
On the battlefield, the military pledges to leave no soldier behind. As a nation, let it be our pledge that when they return home, we leave no veteran behind.
Dan Lipinski
The function of a citizen and a soldier are inseparable.
Benito Mussolini
When we assumed the Soldier, we did not lay aside the Citizen.
George Washington
You pay to play. Having fun is ok. Kill Skuls or kill Crey. Hunt at night or in the day. Black or white or shades of grey. Play it your way. We have no say.
Silas' official theme song: Word Up!
My uncle who served in Vietnam died earlier this year. After a long battle with alcoholism, trying to find his place in life and depression, he was finally killed by lymphatic cancer (of all the things... I was expecting liver failure, but the doctors said his liver was perfectly fine...).
So, Uncle Eric, may you finally have the peace you desired.
And to my fellow veterans out there, stay strong.

Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.
