The Hobbit Video Blog #4... IN 3D!
That was actually quite interesting. Still not convinced about 3D though. Last few trips to the cinema I've taken I have chosen the 2D option when its been available.
This is a song about a super hero named Tony. Its called Tony's theme.

Didn't watch it yet, but the fact that the OP mentions camera-tech is enough to sell it for me. 3D done with a stereo camera (a'la Avatar) is a good thing. It's the post production, pop-up book style that's a waste of money. CGI movies are the exception to the PP 3D=bad rule...as they can add the second "camera" anytime, since it's virtual, anyway.
Cracked did an article on why 3D done the right way (stereo camera) is a good thing a while back...from what I remember it should be SFW, but I'm not gonna link it, just in case. It's just another tool in the storyteller's tool box.

I watched the blog also; doing it the way they are by changing makeup for highlight effect, for set decorations to make details more prominent, and lastly by shooting at 48 frames a second (just under human eye speed) means that the overall effect is going to be noticeably more immersive than Avatar was (because that's literally the only other film to date that's actually tried something with 3D for me).
If I understood Jackson correctly, your field of vision will effectively be much wider than the rectangle of the cinema screen and we'll feel much more 'within' the scene because of this. It means I'll probably be cringing with fright every second they're in Mirkwood with all the freaking spiders (I hate spiders!), but such wonderfully pivotal scenes like Smaug's lair should be breathaking, because our perspective will have 'inside' the frame of the shot rather than being 'outside' looking in. And that is cool.

No, seriously.
I'll admit I groaned inwardly at first, but it seems like the camera tech they're using goes above and beyond gimmick shots.
Also, here's video blog #3 in case you missed it (like I did).
