Game is getting 10 FPS... Please help.

I recently encouraged one of my friends to play CoH ever since the game went free. However, after downloading it we've run into an issue. He's getting 10 frames per second. Unless he turns the video all the way down to low, he keeps getting 10 frames per second. Now the solution should sound simple, but it's not.

The video card he is using is an ATI Radeon HD 5770. That is capable of running Battlefield: Bad Company 2, HAWX, MW2, and Batman: Arkham Asylum.... the latter being at almost 60 FPS. He has all the latest drivers. So It's definitely not the video card.

We moved onto RAM. He has 6 GB, so that's not a problem, either.

Then we moved onto the processor. Admittedly, his processor is kind of weak. It's an AMD dual-core. But I ran city of heroes on the same kind of processor with the same kind of video card and, while I did sometimes have tremendously long loading times, I never suffered 10 fps. The game ran like a dream.

And there's the internet. He doesn't have the greatest internet in the world. He sometimes has insanely slow download times. But I ran city of heroes on DIAL-UP, and never had 10 frames per second. I often had dc's, but never lag that bad. And he can hook his xbox to the same internet and play multiplayer no problem.

Those are all the problems I can find wrong that would have that kind of impact on game performance. I fear that if he has to suffer through the terrible low quality video settings, that he might not continue playing. Does anyone have any tips to give that may help improve his performance. It doesn't make sense why his computer should run the game so terribly.

Is CoH the only running program at the time?
Has the computer been virus/malware scanned?
How long has it been since the hard drive was defragged (if it isn't a SSD)?
How much free space is on the hard drive?

If all of those have been covered, then I would double check the Video Drivers. For that card, you should be using the Catalyst 11.9 drivers. If using the 11.10 Beta drivers for other games, the fixes that improve CoH might not be in them yet.

In addition to what Morgan asked.

Is he leaving the launcher running in the background?
Does he have Ambient Occlusion turned on or Advanced Occlusion set to Enabled?

Why not have your friend run CoH Helper and HiJackThis and post the logs here? We might be able to spot some settings or software that is contributing to the problems and offer possible solutions without having to guess or play 20 questions.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

What TJ said...

In my experience I had a fairly big performance bump going from an Athlon II 630 to Phenom II 965. The L3 cache on the Phenom II chip really made a difference for me and it made trial lag go away. YMMV

Ok. Here is my friend's CoH helper stats.

P.S: This is not the original computer. This is his laptop. Both are running the game like garbage. I wanna see if we can get the game to run better on his laptop as well as his desktop. (he's not at his desktop atm).

The Mobility 4200 is a rather poor performing video card for gaming.

The drivers that are installed are over a year and a half old.

I'd recommend upgrading to the 11.9 Mobility Drivers.

Of course, proper uninstallation, driver cleaning and then new driver installation procedures should always be followed.

First off, both Desktop and Laptop should be upgraded to Windows 7 Service Pack 1. The Service Pack resolves many issues and could resolve some of these problems.

On the desktop, I'd recommend lowering the Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering settings quite a bit. I'd also recommend lowering the World Detail to at least High. You may also want to have them lower the Maximum Particle Count to 25050 as well.

I'm not seeing anything really out of the ordinary outside of those things.

Please post the HiJackThis logs as well as there may be something else running on the computer that is causing these problems.

How are the computers connected to the modem/router/gateway/whatever his ISP connection is?

A few things jump out at me.

1. Turn AA to off.
2. Vertical Sync: off
3. Depth of Field: off
4. Reduce World texture to high or even lower.

Some commentary, the Athlon X2s is a fairly old CPU. Considering I had issues with graphical lag with an AMD Athlon II 630 with a 5770. I'm not surprised you are having issues with an older slower chip with higher graphical settings.

As TJ said, update windows 7 to SP1.

Drivers on the desktop, while not ancient, are a few months old and given the issues with older ATI drivers I'd strongly recommend updating them to 11.9 as well.
