New Comics Day - 10/26/2011
This is an issue from 9/21, but I thought I could ask...
Is anyone reading Joe Casey's Marvel miniseries "Vengeance"? I'm midway through #3 and have no idea what the **** is going on. I've been looking for other opinions on if it's worth reading or not - The only online review I found was at CBR and the guy loved it, but admitted his bias. Just wondering if anyone else has an opinion.
Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.

Also I need to read Legion: Secret Origin... I'm betting it will be D-
Wow, big drop. I'll be picking this up Saturday, along with the second issues of Flash and Superman.
Really miss Power Girl and Stephanie Brown. |
read my review for why Aquaman fell so hard in my opinion...
My reaction to this comic was... Wow this is a slow start... huh? I'm done? That was a pretty good comic...What was good about it? What happened? not much... a 5 page scene that should have been handled in one followed by a 4 pages scene that should have been 2 pages. Followed by a several page scene that had bad tropes and repeats of "wit" from the several stretched scenes...and then follow that up with a brief fight that has an ending that makes little sense... OMG I just was tricked into thinking an average to bad book was good at first glance. This entire comic could have been and should have been fit into 4, maybe 5, pages. The first scene we don't need to see much of and the more that we're shown the less horrific these guys are. This is an axiom of visual medium of the horror genre... let the reader/viewer scare themselves. The second scene was nice, but then over extended by Geoff's stupid back and forth dialogue that add nothing to the book except to stretch scenes and issues so that it fits into a 6 part arc. The more I read of his work the more I get annoyed with this shlock. The trick that made this seem like a good book is that there was a fight scene at the end that increased the pace and makes you think oh wow I just had a great time, but you didn't. You sat through bad filler comedy and badly done horror for more than half the book. But the worse part about that is that the end fight scene had Aquaman just stand idly by while the trident was calmly taken away and then he was spit on. Congratulations whoever made that happen, whether it was geoff, the artist, the editor, or all three that allowed that to slip by they just gave Aquaman his first real threat after building him up to be cool and they have him being impotent. Those scenes with him like that are so out of place in the last two issues and how Aquaman has been acting it's unbelievable that that got through what with 2 editors v.v |
I didn't get any of these yet, but snatched up most if the #1s for the Bat-family; including Justice League and Teen Titans, not including Batwoman, Batgirl, or Batwing. I like most of what I've read so far, but I doubt I'll stick with Batman and Robin past the first arc. I just cannot stand Damien. I'd have slapped that little ******* back to Talia if I were Bruce.
I hate how they did away with Red Robin, at least on his own, but Nightwing kinda makes up for it. I really enjoyed that one. Justice League and Teen Titans are ok. Looks like the former is just telling us how we got to this point, while the latter appears to have erased the last few years entirely and is "present day". Not liking that or Red Robin's new duds.
I'm thinking I'll probably stick with Batman, Nightwing, TDK, and might get into Detective Comics.
Btw, anyone notice the hooded figures in the background of at least one panel in B&R and TT (only two I noticed them in)? Wonder what's going on there...
Freedom
Blueside: Knight'Hawk, lvl 50, Scrapper
Yellowside: Dark'Falcon (Loyalist), lvl 20, Blaster
That Stinging Sensation #482183
Some guy: Hey Aquaman, come check this out!
Aquaman: Gosh, that's weird.
Creatures (attacking): Raaarrr! Spit!
Narrator: tune in next month when we'll hear Aquawoman say, "Mera, damn it!"
- which is something I've felt about several of the new DCnU books. Seem we just get started and before ya know it there's Carol Burnett tugging her ear. Say, maybe that's who that mysterious hooded woman is.
Superman #2 felt more like a complete issue.
I also got Journey Into Mystery #630 (this is the only Marvel comic I still pick up) but I haven't read it yet.
i am really liking the new Superboy comics. This is probably my new favorite series in the new 52. I also have been picking up Nightwing and I am glad to see Dick Grayson in this role and no longer Batman.
Night-Hawk07 - I too am disappouinted that Red Robin no longer gets his own series. This was one one my favorite comics prior to the new 52. I hate being forced to pick up Teen Titans to follow Tim Drake and I also hate the new costume and hope they will eventually go back to the Cape and Cowl. But I think teen titans is an ok story and I am curious to follow once Superboy enters.
I bought Superman 1 and 2 but haven't been able to read past the first page or 2 as I haven't found these to be that interesting. Probably going to drop Superman but may have to pick up action comics instead.
While I have enjoyed all green lantern books since the beginning of the Sinestro Corps War. Post-relaunch New Guardians has been the only GL book I have enjoyed reading.
I'm trying to find something I like about this title, but I just can't. This'll include a few spoilers so stop if you want none. First thing that annoys me is the quote "You can't go home again." If we were talking about Superman in general it would be an apt line, but we're in a setting where he's talking about Krypton. Clark doesn't remember Krypton. He doesn't consider Krypton home and to make this in error more so is that the quote doesn't mean a physical place and Clark would know this as he's a well read person. Next we move to General Lane who says pretty much that Superman is a target and this make Superman question himself. No. Just No. That's not how Superman would react. Why? Because he would have had to face this early in his career and you hear it all over the place. You hear it even in a world without super-heroes and Clark again would realize that "No, crime and disasters don't happen around me cuz I'm here, but I'm here because this is where crime and disasters are most likely to occur" Does he really think the likes of Brainiac wouldn't attack Earth? Especially after the events of Darkest Night and Brightest Day where we know that Earth is a highly prized place because of the Entity and it's position in the multiverse. It just doesn't work for Superman to be questioning like this. Lois scene... [sarcasm] yay they are removing Lois from the comic because her being the perfect damsel is bad[/sarcasm] ... oh and "The only reason I'm successful is because of you Clark, both as motivation and giving me all those Superman stories" ... real classy, not. The main story though is that there is a monster that Clark can't see or hear... and somehow can be seen and heard by others and everything else and even though Kryptonians have a much larger range than Humans and include Human rang in both those areas Clark can't hear or see the monster... and the creature doesn't cause sound or visual change either... for some odd reason. So we're left to assume it's magic and the creatures are actually magic'd humans who have something to do with Krypton? It's not a mystery or interesting when you are not given clues to figure out and when it makes so little sense to begin with. I like Superman when he is written well and George Perez is an awesome writer, but so far these last two issues have just been bad and without even trying you can poke tons of holes in them. Perhaps there is something I'm missing and at the end of the arc this will all make sense and work, but right now, every page makes me cringe...I can't help but think that something is effecting Perez's ability to tell a great story. |
