Why do teammate entries in the team window go solid gray?

I've noticed that teammate entries sometimes turn solid gray in the new Team UI window. I can't Recall Friend them when in this state. Does anyone know what causes this?

It seems to be that when they are too far away this happens. I seem to recall that this began when freedom went live. Oddly, I've only ever seen it happen in Atlas. I'm not sure much more than that, but maybe I'll go back and read over the patch notes from around the time Freedom went live and see if I can find more info there.

That's what I thought too. But the behavior seems inconsistent if it is based on distance. And what would be the point of this? The whole idea behind Recall Friend is to be able to teleport teammates as long as they are within the 10,000 yd range of the power, but I get "Invalid Target" if they are gray, even if they are only 600 yds away.

I believe it's a bug.

Since it only seems to be happening in Atlas, perhaps the scale on the new map is messed up.

I think it's part of the new Phasing Tech

What? I don't know anything about this. I can't even tell if that's a joke or serious. If it's serious, can you link something, or at least share your info, please?

It is. And it's irritating as hell.

Noticed when they were doing the praetorian invasions. The hami seeds or whatever they're called would drop in or out of phase depending on your particular tie with that phased area - and you'd see the team list go grey (or not) at the same time.

The phasing technology causes you to see the world around you differently from other characters, based on actions you have performed. This means you can be seeing something completely different from a character standing right next to you.

When you join a team, or leadership changes, do you recall seeing a system message in your chat window saying something like, "So and so is now the active player. You are experiencing the world based on their actions." or something? That's what it's talking about - 'phasing'.

The missions and contacts in the new Atlas Park make extensive use of this.

Ah. I do recall seeing that message, but had no clue what it was all about. Sounds sorta wonky to me, but I plan to see if I can find more info somewhere and withhold judgement until I'm fully informed. Thanks for the heads up, though, and getting me started.

It is part of the phasing tech, when team mates go in and out of the phase zones you loose the ability to affect them, just like mobs loose the ability to affect you when you go in and out.

Its quite quirky for MMs

Thanks Eric! I don't know how I missed hearing about this, but I did. Thanks to you and the others here, I should be caught up in no time.

But I don't understand how or why this affects the team UI window. While we were playing (Hero tips) in Atlas Park, teammates were going gray who were doing nothing but heading back to Ms. Liberty to train up before joining us for the next mission. Why would they go gray while training up (or shopping at a vendor)?

I 2-box alignment tips in Atlas, so I see this all the time. It's pretty maddening.

I haven't done rigorous analysis of when it happens or goes away, but it seem to happen when I enter specific neighborhoods.

I encountered this problem before Freedom and in other zones besides Atlas so I think there's more to the bug than that.

I'm getting the impression from what I've read that some places (mostly places in Atlas) are out of phase with the rest of the world. If people are in or passing through them, they go grey. Atlas has more of these 'out of phase' areas, so we see it in Atlas most. If they are out of phase, they go grey in the Team UI. If they head back to Miss Lib and go through a out-o-phase area ont he way, well, they go out of phase.

Granted I'm new to the concept, too, so I might have read some things incorrectly..
