Beam/Poison REALLY bad, or just bad for hardcore players?
Poison can stack a lot of -Res if certain powers were fixed. Up to -120% with AH Proc to be exact.
After a few levels of playing with my Beam/Poison, I'm not bothered about its damage output etc, but the redraw is driving me up the wall. It just ooks really stupid.
So I'm going to try rerolling him as a Plant/Control/Poison something (if that's a viable combo - I haven't actually checked lol).
Cheers for all the good advice.

1) Traps was broken. Sure it was hilariously fun to nuke a mob every 30 seconds on an ITF with a PGT full of procs, but it was OP'ed - in normal farming the old days, a friends' fire/traps blew every fire/psy doms' times by far because of the nuke PGT. Now tell me that P. Trap is a bad power when a level 20 corr allowed an entire team to use wakies and recover just using that power along ffg because mobs were choking. Remember it does all of these effects on a TWENTY FIVE feet radius:
- Regeneration -10 for 10s PvE only [Ignores Enhancements & Buffs] Effect does not stack from same caster - RechargeTime -30% for 10s [Ignores Enhancements & Buffs] Effect does not stack from same caster - +5.96s Held (mag 3) (after 0.25 second delay) 2) Traps starts being effective on SOs, it's kinda lackluster before because the powers take too long to recharge, after that it only grows stronger. Especially after level 30ish when teams (and you) usually pick higher difficulties with pink mobs and whatnot so battles last enough to have your toys ready every mob. 3) Toebombing works a bit well playing aggressively but not for long - you get trip mine at 35, when you can use one or two mines if you get ahead of everyone (as you should as a trapper) but it's not long before the teams are steamrolling and you don't get much use from it. 4) You don't really need Hover if you're playing aggresively because it doesn't take that long to set up your debuffs and they don't interrupt like Trip Mine, summon seekers on top of spawn, lay down pgt and acid when they're tohit and dmg debuffed, there you go, my /dark and /rad don't need to go to melee to do that but they take about the same time to setup say, tar patch, darkest night, fearsome stare for the team. One thing that worked very well for me was SS+Stealth IO + grant invis for the FFG (I was gonna pick some LOTG mule anyway, was surprised how effective it was for laying your traps in the late game when , you're right, some mobs can destroy the FFG quickly - although I'm leveling a new trapper and in the 20s I don't have grant invis or SS yet and have no problem laying debuffs, maybe it's a late game problem as the enemies get harder, I took my fire/traps to 50 long ago) 5) Most corrs that take Mace Mastery do it because of Scorpion Shield and maybe Foc Accuracy (good set mule too), those don't cause redraw (how often do you see them taking web cocoon? And even if they take the crappy pet it takes forever to recharge even in a top build, even web coccon has a hideously long recharge - 32s - for a simple hold so you'd need an IO build to use it every 8 secs, . |
2. /Traps toys are mostly useless 30+ when everyone picks up their nukes, godmodes, has more slots to fully slot their AoE's, etc. Groups move at a brisker pace and the value of Traps drops because of set up time. /Traps is amazing at level 22 with basic IO's compared to /Cold or /Thermal, but afterwards /Cold and /Thermal pick up their heavy hitters and don't need set up as they can use the signature powers with a team moving at a brisk pace while /Traps can't.
3. I agree, which reinforces my second point, which is why Trip mine and time bomb are not really worth it. At least Poison's last two powers have far more situational use compared to /Traps
4. Actually without hover, it takes too long now, especially on steam rolling teams in the 30's. Anyone that has played Traps and hover trapping can tell the difference was far more efficient then compared to now.
5. But why choose /Traps when you can pick up scorpion shield, Mace's web envelope, Mace's web cocoone (AoE) as an epic? /Traps Web Grenade is single target like Mace's web envelope, but Mace has an AoE immobilize while /Traps does not.
Guess what? Both Mace web envelope and Mace web cocoon causes redraw! The horror!
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
hardcore/over 6 month vet here.. as soon as i seen beam rifle i wanted to try (new n shiney).. but now that its sitting at lvl 44 i find it real slow and clunky..the redraw is driving me nutz, and the animation seems a bit long to me.. the damage seems meh at best..the side effects arent effective, and disintigrate really doesnt make that much of an improvement to damage, even with scourge. ill still get this build to 50 and shelf it after.
/poison is fine though...just not a good pairing for me with beam...
rolled a fire/poison corr sitting at lvl 31 rt now and its already a beast.. all my attacks from primary n secondary just flow out lovely.

Based on the replies here, I'd say that it is an issue with those more concerned with numbers than you are.
(Please don't read my humor as disrespect for the logical arguments based around efficiency... I could see how some people would not like this pairing of powers, but I think it is more a matter of personal preference, which is something we can't really answer for the OP one way or the other... We could ask what playsets a person does enjoy and ones they do not enjoy and maybe that would lead to a better answer to the original question)
I like Beam Rifle a lot, and I think it can go well with most secondaries, it's just that the nature of Poison specifically drove me crazy, as you'll be using your secondary very often even at TO level, like a low level emp uses her heals a lot, and at later levels use her buffs whenever they're up.
Actually looking at the secondaries, and since speed boost is AoE now, I think maybe only /time would bother me almost like /poison on a weapon set because I'd be using time crawl quite often, since I'm not usually bothered by redraw and even /Rad is not that bothersome since in the post 30 game you won't be healing often and your anchors won't melt in 5 seconds because you'll likely learn when and who to use as anchors by then and not need to activate them more than once per mob. Even soloing at say, x1/+3 you will likely want to use envenom+weaken once in each boss, so that's 4 times if there are two, and at least the sensation of urgency to keep Disintegration going kinda gets in the way for me.
Envenom and Weaken have awesome numbers (Weaken alone has double the -res of Enervating Field, and a bit more than double from Acid Mortar, which is fair since those two are fire and forget, especially mortar), and no doubt /Poison is a good AV soloing set, but even in this scenario I'd like the -regen to be stronger (like Benumb) since it's the only debuff that stacks on a target, you'll still want to use it every time it's up on an AV because the base value is low, if it were strong like other sets you'd only use it once or twice until it expires on an AV/GM, solo or teaming. But the -regen is the same as Transfusion from kin, I recall not being able to kill a GM on a team (I was a tanker, there was only a real damage dealer iirc) and we were only able to do it after I asked the two /kin trollers to spam transfusion like no tomorrow to help with the -regen.
I'll still level another poison but since the other factor that 'killed' my BR/Poison was the fact that I was never in need to be in melee and the t9 is a melee aura, I'm making a controller with a PbAoE aura, probably elec since I have played fire and ice control to death and my lowbie elec/thorns dom isn't impressing me except for being able to drain mobs so fast even before SOs
