Ice Armor / Dark Melee

Hi Folks,
I'm thinking of rolling an Ice / DM tank. Looking through the guides and the first 4 or 5 pages of this forum, I didn't see any talk of this combo. Is this viable or is it a suspect type build? I'm assuming you would softcap positional on this or would it be S/L/En/Ne? If anyone has direction, I would appreciate it. If there are posts on this which I missed, please feel free to just direct me that way. Thanks.

It's a decent combo. The -ToHit of Dark Melee works very well with the +Def of Ice Armor. You get a second heal, two endurance recovery powers, and the +Dmg power is great for boosting Icicles.

Ice Armor is typed Defense, and you should be easily able to soft cap S/L/E/NE Damage types. Fire and Cold you likely won't be able to softcap for Defense, but you get great resistance to cold damage, and most Fire attacks come with some sort of S/L type to them as well (not all, just most), so you'll be sort of covered there.

DM can go with pretty much any set. For defense sets, it is perfect for the -tohit and for siphon life. Ice/DM would want to perma Hoarfrost to stay at the hp cap and then get healed from SL (which should be a part of your attack chain, so it will be a consistent heal).

As Aett said, Ice is typed defense so when you go after IOs for set bonuses, you want the ones that give typed/positional def instead of positional/typed def.

It is pretty trivial to softcap. CJ or Hover, Tough and Weave are the only extra powers you need. CJ/Hover only need an LotG: rech, Tough gets 4 pieces of Reactive Armor and a 5th slot for a steadfast unique if you don't take Permafrost. Weave and Frozen/Glacial Armors just need ED capped def slotting (I went with LotG:rech, def/end, def/end/rech, and def in my setup). All of those things will put you up to at least 42% def to s/l/e/n. Then you just use attack sets like Kinetic Combat or Eradication to fill in that last 3%.

Also be sure to get a nice mix of rech/endmod/def into EA with a touch of endredux.

Thanks for the input folks. I appreciate it! I'll have to toy around to see if I can get a solid build.

in addition to what's been said already, i read somewhere that it's good to put some weight in one of the other 2 damage mitigation modes that your set isn't based on, namely: resists or health.

in this case, health. try to get a good recharge rate going on siphon life, hibernate, and hoarfrost. to that end i dropped the spiritual line into the alpha slot.

+rech does 0 good for hibernate due to the nophase effect is places on the user.

also, if you're running perma Hoarfrost, you only need enough +hp bonuses and the accolades so that Hoarfrost hardcaps your hp.

since +resist is hard to build for and not really worth it, you 'can' go for -dmg powers to stack with CE. Darkest Night from Soul Mastery is great for this. then there's the Interface that grants -dmg as well as Void Judgment, who's radial side has a heavy -dmg debuff.

What's the "nophase effect" and how does it negate the benefits of having hibernate recharge more quickly?

Nophase is a condition placed on users of self phasing powers like Hibernate or Phase Shift. It applies a condition that the user cannot use another 'self phasing' power for the duration of 2 minutes.

That 2 minutes just happens to be the base recharge time of Hibernate. Therefore, reductions in Hibernate's recharge rate are worthless. Just pop a Heal IO in Hibernate's base slot and move on.

About how much recharge is needed to perma Hoarfrost out of curiosity? Or please direct me if this has been answered. I appreciate all the input!

Don't forget - if those numbers are right, of course - that you also need to adequately slot Hoarfrost for recharge.

I was actually thinking about this combination just today. However, I'm having troubles figuring out what to slot and where, really.

I have -a- build I threw together. I think it's a bit junk really, but could someone take a look at it, and help me streamline it to be more effective? I'd really appreciate it.

I run an ice/ice tank now (JUst put my build up in the build workshop if anyone wants a look.)

When I saw this threat, I tossed a quick build for ice/dm together..and well..it's some scary numbers

I think the damage is awesome..especially for a tank, and enough aoe/taunt effects to grab everything in sight and mow thm down.

I may have to make one

IMHO though, I think in this set Hibernation is a waste of a power slot. Yes it's a good 'in combat rest'.. but you have so many other heal and endurance mitigation options, that it becomes redundant to have hibernate.

Getting the global recharge to run perma-hoarfrost is easier in this build then in most. ..and watching iceicles do 90 ponts of dam a tick would be jaw dropping

The ice defense has always been a fave of mine. 70% s/l defense and max HP means never having to appologise

Even though Hibernate may become redundant as a +regen/recovery power, it will always be the goto power when you're slapped with a gajillion debuffs that could lead to your death. No other tanker set can do that...

Namely -def as Ice Armor only gets a little over 50% DDR. So when you get hit with a lot and your defense becomes red, that's a good time to hit Hibernate and wait out the debuffs.

Too much IO defense slotting. In my experience, getting 45-47% to s/l/e/n and then relying on EA for incarnate defense numbers is the most flexible solution (esp if you toss Darkest Night into the mix).

Also, one major thing with Siphon life is you want to try to maximize it both as an attack and as a heal (unless you're paired with a set that doesn't need extra heals, like Regen).

Here's an Ice/DM/Soul build I made quite some time ago. It has a travel power, so I assume I made it for someone who required it as I don't build with travel powers anymore.

I've never really run into that..or not that I've noticed. The only serious need I've had for hibernate is in Keyes when hit with disintegrate.

Of course you could also mitigate the above situation with barrier, which should pull anyone's defense out of the red

I honestly don't know. I'd have to play with it and see.
