Why do you Blast?

Maestro + Grey Pilgrim = very yes.

I'm speaking solo with this, but I know that I have to take far more hits (whether they are dodged or not), or mez for much longer to drop a boss or an EB with my Corruptors and Defenders.

Sure, on a team you can think that your buffs or debuffs are helping a lot (and they probably are). But Blasters are just lots of fun solo and teamed. That screaming, explosive playstyle is a lot of fun.
Because I've always loved glass cannons, since I started gaming.
Because coming from a mage in a certain other game, Blaster was the logical choice.
Because some of the flashiest powers in the game are blast set tier 9s, and I'm a sucker for shiny.
Because leveling a Blaster and finding the point where they really bloom is more tangible and satisfying than that point with any other AT.
Because I'm a minmaxer and there's something hilarious about minimizing defenses and maximizing offense and STILL coming out on top.

I don't play a Blaster.

I am the blast.

Game on.

The only character I never remade or deleted since launch is a flying energy/energy blaster. Not my first 50 but neither my last. That combination seems like possibly the second most iconic go-to pairing behind inv/SS tankers.

Big badda BOOM!

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

The damage. The satisfaction. The challenge.

Damage: Blasters hand out damage like nothing else in the game. The more I attack, the more the damage grows. No tempermental scourge on a Corruptor, nor still not enough solo buff on a Defender; just pure Blaster damage goodness.

Satisfaction: I can keep shooting through most mez. Oh no, I got held – BOOM! You’re still dead. No extra toggles, no fiddly IO, just being a Blaster means I will keep firing.

Challenge: Solo, I approach every mission with a kind of “Challege Accepted” smirk on my face. Just what is it going to take to stop my toon? Could be a mob of 10 that I missed the LTs, could be an EB that reaches me just as all my attacks are on recharge. Without HP/DEF/RES etc, it is about my skill to win. Anybody else remember when Blasters did more damage the lower their HP? Why? I imagine because the best Blasters were always on an edge, taking absurd risks, and then still managing to survive.

I Blast because it is a hell of a lot of fun.

Maestro nailed it for me too...

It is a tactical AT. You cannot just wade in indiscriminately and wail away at
everything - that way lies Death (and I *hate* dying more than I like killing).
In that regard, it's as much a mindset as a playstyle.

You survey the situation, assess and prioritize the targets, and then, you methodically
kill them. Done right, it's a virtual symphony - like the way Downey fought in the
Sherlock Holmes movie... It's a ballet.

Solo, you live or die based on how well you assess, and implement your plan.

I enjoy playing those kinds of ATs - Blasters, Stalkers, Khelds (PBs) -- they
all have that approach, and their success depends on their ability to carry it
through.

On teams, it's a source of amusement (and some pride) that I'm usually the
last to die if there's a team wipe and more often than not, the fact that I
don't die is often a deciding factor that saves the day when things do go south...

In my experience, Blasters that die often either: Do not understand a tactical
playstyle OR Simply choose to ignore it and play their Blaster like a Brute
(with the predictable, and entirely appropriate face-plants).

Sometimes, though, you've got a full tray of inspirations and you say "I wonder how long these would last?" and just open fire.

When that happens at the end of a Cuda, and the game decides to throw a few thousand fifth column ambushers at you, and everyone else is literally just standing there betting on how long before you drop, and you don't drop, and eventually they ask you to exit so they can finish the strike force, its beautiful.

Good Point.

And sometimes, just when you think you finally are gonna drop you fire off your
last nuke in pure finger-flipping defiance only to discover you're the last one
still standing...

Yep. Blasters live for a moment like that...

Of course, counting on that as a standard, opening strategy, is usually one
of the quickest routes to the debt badges...

PS> Oh, and enough inspirations can change the situation for any AT...

blasters are all about shredding the enemy.

if i want to control them, i'll play doms or controllers.
if i want to jump in and survive unending attacks, i'll play a melee class.
if i want to debuff, i'll play defenders.

when i want to play a blaster, i care less about the secondary effects and most about delivering damage. i don't want a hold, or slows - i want to rain AoE death and 1-2 shot every minion and lt who runs up to hit me one after another. absolutely destroy a boss before they get the few hits that will do me in. blast, blast, punch, blast, punch, explode!

there is no class that lives on the edge as consistently or as binary as blasters.
