I mean I'm sorry, but if you're selling new books, regardless of if you're an online or a brick and mortar store you're competing with Amazon.
The ONLY competition B&N has in my area is Amazon, now that Borders closed, unless you like used beat-up books.

Well, I mean you'd be crazy to live there. It's so hot and muggy. And there's only a couple of inches worth of snow in the winter, if it even snows at all.

Crazy I tell ya.

They may not be a "true" monopoly, but they may act as an effective monopoly.
What state? If you want a Calvin and Hobbes collection, go to a commic book store. They are likely to have stuff that B&N themselves will not carry.

If you want a WH40k book, go to a game store, again, you will be blown away by the amount of stuff they carry a B&N wont.

As for books, you can endure a few minutes in a store that does not have the most expensive lighting possible in the world.

Just because you rather go to a bigger brand store, with better light but less inventory in any given category, does not mean its a monopoly.

There are two comic book stores about an hour away (one way drive). I think there's a grand total of about 3 in the State.

See above.

Stores that are poorly lit tend to have not-the-greatest organizational schemes. Wading through pile after pile of unshelved and unsorted books is not all that enjoyable.

When the choice is that or nothing? My State has a total population of around 800k. We had 1 Borders (to be replaced by that Books-a-million thing) and have 1 B&N that I know of. Some of the smaller towns managed a Walden Books or a small indie. If those towns are lucky, they have an indie.

Yes... those of us who have the (mis)fortune to live in more rural areas don't always have the choice... the nearest Barnes and Noble is a two-hour drive from where I'm at.

We don't have a local comics shop - again, that's a two-hour drive. We do have two gaming stores up here, but one's a brand-new one that caters mostly to a high-school age crowd and card gamers, and the other is a scary little shack that feels like it'll fall over in a serious wind.

It's a fair drive to even make it to a ferry that goes over to civilization - hour and a half one way.

Sometimes, I hate living up here.
