ncsoft launcher: Can you guys lend ncsoft an intern?

So, uhm.

Surely you've noticed that the ncsoft launcher will COMPLETELY REDOWNLOAD complete installs, or complete downloads, even though it has just downloaded all of the files.

And that it does not even TRY to check for available disk space.

So I just downloaded 6.5GB of test server stuff, then didn't have ANOTHER 6GB for it to unpack into (laptop with SSD). So I freed up space. I noticed that it still had the 6.5GB of downloaded files... But when I ran the launcher, it started over.

Now.

You guys had a launcher in the past that was smarter than this. In particular, it was not written by someone who devoted weeks of effort to introducing failures into something that would work right if you simply expended no effort at all. It was able to look at local files and use them if they had suitable checksums. I think it even checked for available disk space. It did not unconditionally UAC-prompt for admin access even when it would succeed without difficulty if you clicked No.

And it occurs to me: Surely, Paragon studios has some kind of summer intern who has taken a computer science class, maybe knows a little pascal, and manages to come to work with the pants on the lower half and the shirt on the upper half four days out of five, right? Maybe you could lend this summer intern to ncsoft.

uhm.. i'm not entirely sure where this problem would be coming from for you.. when i installed the Beta Server client i did what i always used to with TrainingRoom. I copied my game folder and ran the new install in that, it skipped over all the stuff it wanted to install that i allready had.. no issues whatsoever..

I'm trying to be a good boy and follow instructions, running the launcher normally and letting it install the test server stuff fresh. I haven't ever previously had test server.

I just note that redownloading 6.5GB of files when you already had them right there is sorta dim, and... Really, who doesn't check for disk space before an install?

See theres ur Problem....

Test Server is a complete different Install then normal Game, of course it does a complete redownload and install of it, cause it normally is a different build then and not in any wise compatible to the live server build/installation.

Same for beta, if u have like me Live/test/ and beta on ur machine u have 3 complete Installations of the Game.

Well in ur case , either install it on a external drive (did that for a long time myself) it was playable, only the start up load/ zoning took a bit longer, or stick with the live build since u have limited disk space as u said.

And yes there are ways to avoid the complete redownload, but they are rather a bit complicated...

Greetings

My standard trick is to copy over the pigg files from a live install and delete the checksum file.

Granted, for the test servers *last* patch (the 2.5GB update) if you hadnt installed the test server previously, then there *is* a way around it.

Start up the NCsoft launcher, and let it *start* downloading the files. Stop and exit the launcher (so it is no longer running) and then copy over you pigg files from your *live* installation.

Delete the checksum file and the large (pre allocated) download file, and then restart the launcher.

That way, it rechecks what you have, and then only downloads what you need. It was how i managed to get the beta client downloaded "faster" than normal (ie 3.5GB of data instead of the 6.5GB that it wanted)
