A little more info might help. You've named your pic "why here" and all the notation it has on it is latitude and longitude. Why would the Vanguard care? Are you playing a word game with the word "vanguard?" Is this a riddle? Are only people who know what you're talking about supposed to get it?

Does some Vanguard-related thing display coordinates that are actually that spot? If so, my guess is that whoever wrote the coordinates into the game picked them essentially at random. If it's in Rhode Island, I guess they at least did their homework and made sure the coordinates fit.

But the Google Maps result for those coordinates doesn't look like what was on the original pic. Now I'm even more confused.That is to say, I was sure Rhode Island was on the coast directly, but I saw no coast on the original pic, and the specific location in it seems pretty zoomed out, yet if you zoom out that much you end up catching more urban areas and the coast itself.

The coordinates are Providence, Rhode Island - ish.
It's an approximation of where the RWZ would be in the 'real world.' The coordinates show up in conference room screen of the Vanguard base. In the 'real world' the coordinates are a bit too inland and cover a somewhat rural and swampy area, which is completely unlike the area the mothership crashed into.

Didn't I hear something about them lampshading stuff like this? City of Heroes being an alternate universe that could happen if Heroes existed? If that's the case, I'm sure Primal Rhode Island would be a LOT bigger than ours if 90% of all superheroes made it their home base. And an excellent target for aliens.

I think the coordinates are referred to somewhere in-game. I thought it was on the load screen, but maybe it's on a plaque or something.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.

The signifigance is that there's a crashed Rikti Mothership there. Why do the Vanguard care? Because the Rikti are right on Paragon's doorstep.
