A Really Bad Idea

So, I was taking a look at all of these new temporary powers that were placed in the Invention system. They all look like they're really good secondary powers.

So I just had the worst idea ever.

What if I were to raise a character from 1 to 50 using just temporary powers created through the invention system, veteran powers (for when I run out of temporary power charges during a mission), a secondary armor of my choice.

This would be rolled on a Scrapper so I can have decent survivability.

So here's my question to you.

Should I include the attacks from Fighting in this challenge?

hmm, if you were going for a pure natural themed toon you cuold use brawl and power pool powers such as jump kick, air superiority, and fighting pool attacks for when you have no temps

sounds very interesting though

Well, since I mostly got the idea from Ajax brawling and kicking his way to glory...

Agreed.
And I've seen some people mention similar ideas before and it has made me consider doing something along these lines, but I never have.

I've heard of a Blaster AR/Dev going for it, mostly just using the devices, hehe.

Go for it!
And post updates!!

I ran 2 task forces today, so I have approximately 82,491 temp power recipes I'd be happy to donate to the cause!

Oh, and one Tempered Readiness recipe.

Please don't send me all of those at once.

This is very similar to the MAN builds from years ago.

To have a MAN build, iirc you had to be;

Natural origin
Only use powers avail to everyone (pool powers, temps)
Had to have MAN in caps in the name
No powers from Primary
No powers from Secondary (including shields)

Never sounded that fun to me but they did have a 'following' for a while there. Ranks up there with Petless MM's for annoyance factor though.

Maestro Mavius - Infinity
Capt. Biohazrd - PCSAR
Talsor Tech - Talsorian Guard
Keep Calm & Chive On!

I guess this is where I'm not a MAN. I'd like to have some level of survivability.

Man builds used Tough and Weave combined with Stealth and Invis and the medicine pool to augment survival.

Still, I wouldn't want to try it. Your plan at least doesn't sound as annoying having shields from secondary and all.

Well I'd like to keep at least half of my hair by the time I'm done playing.

Anyways, I'm officially starting this challenge as soon as I get home from school. Pardon my lack of time zone conversion, but that's 3-ish pm Central time.

If you make an "Alternate Build" (Access it at the trainers) you can stay "Level Zero" with no power selections at all, you won't even have your Tier One power from your Secondary.

That way, you could have a "Pure Temp" build!

Fun, huh?

American Dawg, Starblaze, Neanderthal Joe, Shining Dawn, Tokamak Dragon, Stinger Incarnate, Burning Tyger, Dover Tornado, Big Roach, Dark Paladin, Archmage Wylde, Kings Row Hornet, Prancing Deer
Avogadro, Science Lord
Edgar Nightcraft, Doc Cicada, Chupa Macabre, Dr Forchtenstein, Blood Shrew

Not to thread jack...
But in the same camp as really bad ideas.

I have convinced a couple of friends to build No-Die characters and level them to 50.

If you die, remake character and start over at level 1
Only veteran power allowed is Flight at level 6 (soon to be 4).

Your name must have the numbered 'version' you are on.

To date, one of my buddies is on version 28.
He almost quit the idea when he toasted out at level 33. We all thought he would make it to 50 with that one.
After his anger subsided we prodded him into keep going.

I am on version 17 (sigh).

Another player thinks we are nuts because our general playstyle is .... less than tactical... and more CHARGE!!!!

We do adjust but always maintain some degree of Charge

I've made a character like this before, when I was trying to make a real "fist fighter" before the alternate animations were added.

I think I took MA/Will but I skipped all of the kicking attacks. Instead, I took any melee attack from the power pools that wasn't a kick. Boxing, flurry, air superiority.

I filled in my attack chain with temp powers - Revolver, Gabriel's Hammer, St. Louis Slammer. That's all there were at the time. I guess there are more now - A tazer, at least. I also had my vet powers, which I allowed on the basis that they fit all builds and Sand of Mu was a punching attack anyway.

All in all, it wasn't half-bad. I doubt it would win any contests for "best performing build of the year" but it was playable. Those melee temp powers deal a reasonable amount of damage.

This is why one of the MAN rules was to not team with people who were not also MAN builds. This served two purposes: one, it wouldn't let you obey the letter of the law while breaking its spirit by teaming with people with actual superpowers, and two, inflicting your terribleness on teams was terribly unfair.

At least MAN builds acknowledge that terribleness is part of the point, though.

Level 23 now. And thanks to SOs and power pools, I can run up against Council, Warriors, Sky Raiders and most Tsoo with relatively no problem. Arachnos is sort of a bear with some of the LTs, not looking forward to the Bane Spider Scout or Tarantulas showing up. The main thing was to always have the utility belt, because when I started him there weren't any temp power recipes, just Safeguard side mission temps, and later Day job accolade powers (frag, stun and sleep grenades).

I needed the Fighting Pool, mostly because AR as a primary that I wasn't going to use, meant that I was really short for actual attacks. I've considered taking beanbag, and maybe M-80 Grenade and/or Ignite, as they could be seen as "utility belt" items. But, so far Air Superiority and both fighting pool attacks, on top of just vet powers have done wonders. I probably should get the leaping pool for Jump Kick, Combat Jumping and the soon to come new jump attack. But, that means a respec, so I'll probably wait for Freedom to come down. I took the presence pool for the Fear, but I think wasting a pick and fear effects being what they are, really don't seem to help out at all at this stage.

I am contemplating a similar build with Dual Pistols/Traps Corruptor when Freedom comes down so that the character can go straight to hero without having to run 20 levels of villain or Praet with a wonky set and come right out the gate as a heroine. I think I can squeeze the Stun attack and Swap Ammo into the concept(as well as I have a lot of power picks thanks to almost no primary picks), to simulate borrowed weapons from the character's rogues gallery, seems like all three fire/ice/toxic would work fairly well in-theme as the stun/hold.

This new idea from the OP sounds like it'll be much better off.

I'd do it with a Traps Defender instead.

More survivability, and you don't get as many questionable powers (Smoke Grenade, I'm looking at YOU!)

You should search the forums for references to the Iron Eagles. They're a "No-Die" supergroup. I've seen at least one occasional poster on the forums who has a logo for them as his forum avatar. Sounds like a good support group for you and your friends.
