Lag?

Has anyone else been experiencing a peculiar random lag in the game? Four times now on two separate days, divorced by two other days between them, I have experienced a strange randomly occuring lag that doesn't seem to have any cause. I can't figure it out, but for some reason today, it's hit me with a vengeance and has made the game practically unplayable. Everything outside the game when I go to test if it's my computer behaves perfectly normal. So what's the deal?

I never expect lag in the game, be it peculiar, random or otherwise.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I'm sorry, I should've caught that error before submitting. Lemme fix it.

You have to be more specific as to what kind of performance hit you're seeing.

"Lag" does not tell us what problem you're seeing. "Lag" can be due to many things:

  • Poor graphics performance. This can be due to many different things: your graphics card is not powerful enough, doesn't have enough memory, doesn't deal with certain power effects (many cards slow down with wispy effects like Dark Armor), there are too many powers activating at once, too many characters in the vicinity (liike when dozens of people used to congregate in the Atlas AE), etc.
  • Poor network performance. This can be due to noisy DSL/cable lines, excessive traffic on your local broadband leg, some kind of network problem at your ISP, or at NCsoft, a virus running on your machine and hogging all your bandwidth by sending out spam
  • Poor hard disk performance. Some process can cause hard disk thrashing, making things take forever to load, or Windows might be defragging your hard disk.
  • Poor CPU performance. Your anti-virus software could kick in and cause a tremendous slow down, or you could be hit by a virus as above.
  • Poor server performance. Most noticeable on the BAF or when an event occurs with lots of players, your powers seem to be recharged but when you try to use them nothing happens.

Describe where you are, what you're doing and the nature of the problem and we may be able to give you a better idea of what to do about it.

Very well, it's been mostly in missions so far. I mostly solo, so every time it's happened I've been alone. Considering that this is the same rig I've been playing the game on for two and a half years now with the same Internet connection, I highly doubt its a memory problem. And no, antiviruses are not running and the computer's not defragging (I checked and I likely wouldn't be running those while playing a game anyway). Task manager shows no increase of memory usage either.

The framerate just seemes to suddenly drop and then returns to normal after a while. It seems random and it's only recently started, the first occasion of it being last Friday.

I always get heavy random lag in the leadup to a major publish. I solo mm's during these times.

Solo while in a mission makes it sound like something external to the game. Other applications would be one possibility (already mentioned). Have you pulled up the netgraph while getting the lag?
Type /netgraph 1
If will put a pretty little graph in the lower right of your screen that tells you useful things about your connection at that moment. (/netgraph 0 to turn it off)

Well, if it is something external to the game, I haven't found it, because each time it's happened, I've tabbed around and nothing has looked out of order. And also as I said, task manager doesn't seem to notice anything amiss either.

I'll try Netgraph if it happens again, though.

Did it happen in a warehouse map?

I know for me the new sections of some of the warehouse maps can plunge my fps to like 2 fps but when I look away from the new rooms everything is back to normal (well normal for the overworked hampsters running my computer anyways).

No. And I know the rooms you're talking about and they don't actually affect my game as badly as other accounts I've heard on the forums.
