I'll probably use it to move characters I don't play much anymore off of their home server to free up the names there.

My initial guess no, they aren't going change how names are going to work on the VIP server. I could be wrong of course, but that sounds like the kind of sweeping change they would -not- limit to just one server. If they ever made that change to the game it'd be "all or nothing".

I have heard roomers that the naming system MIGHT change. That our global ID name will be locked and tied to our hero name for example.

You could name characters whatever you want.
The main hang-up is contacting one hero vs another with the same name would require typing in the global ID first, which could get long and cumbersome.
Roomers (sic) have some basis in fact. What you're talking about is fantasy, as there's been no hint (official or leaked) of any sort of change of that nature.

It's already too late to get any good names on the new VIP server because I have already taken them. But as I have explained before in a previous thread, I am willing to release some of those names to anyone willing to make an alcoholic donation to the Church of the Drunken Squirrel.
